Long Thin Suppositories: the why's, and why they were better

Back when many of us grew up, infant & child suppositories were long thin Glycerin sticks that mom's everywhere would push up little ones bottoms.

But why were they as long as they were and why aren't they that long anymore ??

To look at the origin of these long n thins we look back to it's predecessor "the soap-stick".

In the early 1900s when a mother needed to deal with a constipated little child it was figured out that by taking a slice of a bar of soap and inserting the tip in the child's rectum that the irritation caused to the rectum and anus would cause the child to have a BM. Was the soap-stick to be fully inserted.

NO ! it was to be held in position or "swabbed" until the child needed to go. Since only the tip of the soap-stick was inserted, the rest of it, in effect was the handle.

But the soaps are kinda harsh on the delicate walls of the rectum. They needed to come up with something else.

Enter Glycerin. Glycerin is definitely rectally irritating but much less so than soap.

So modeled after the soap-stick, the suppositories were long enough to have a handle on them for mothers to hold onto.

( many vintage suppository jars say hold it with a tissue when inserting and then hold it in place )

But did the mothers of the time follow those directions ? Usually no. Usually the baby or child was squirming and so the mother would push it all the way in, so it wouldn't break off, when held sticking out.

So since mother's were fully inserting ( just like adult suppositories ) and in effect giving a larger dose of glycerin than needed, the companies decided to make them small.

So why were the long thin ones "better" ? Because they put stimulating Glycerin deep into the rectum, shallow into the rectum and in the anal sphincters as the suppository melted.

The modern small ones only target the Glycerin in the spot where the suppo is melting.

This is why I make my own long thin STIX for fetish play. I make them by making a mold by rolling foil around a pencil. ( #2 of course lol ). The part that's left sticking out is good for swabbing, or touching w a vibrator.

I remember the long suppositories mom used on me and my 3 sisters. The glycerin suppositories were in a glass jar that had a pink label. The jars contained 24 suppositories.

Mom would place us over her lap bottom upturned. I felt mom pull my cheek apart then the sensation of the suppository slowly sliding into my rectum. About a 1/2 of inch stuck out which mom held so it could not be expelled until it worked well.

After 15 minutes or so the suppository started to move my bowels and sometimes I expelled gas. Once mom sensed that the suppository was working she would pull my cheek apart and slowly sliding the suppository out but not fully. Once the tip of the suppository was at my anus mom would slowly slide the suppository back into the rectum. The in and out motion stimulated the bowel thereby increasing it's effectiveness.

As the suppository was sliding in and out I would complain that I had to go to the toilet. Mom continued slowly sliding the suppository for about 5 more minutes before letting me run to the toilet to relieve myself.

I am not sure why the long suppositories were discontinued as they were more effective than the bullet type today.

@kathy1949 I can only imagine how wonderful it would have been to have my mother use the long thin glycerin suppositories of the 1960's on me in the way that you describe. You are such a lucky lady to have experienced those sensations.

I'm surprised to hear about these long thin glycerin suppositories. I've never seen any… perhaps they were not used in France.

My mother, growing up in the 1950s, received soap "skittles" (ouch), and in the movie La Baule Les Pins two girls (10 years old?) are supposed to self-administer suppositories.

One of my very earliest memories is of receiving one of the long thin suppositories described. It is certainly the earliest memory of anything that I would later understand to be sexual or erotic. I was two or, at most, three years old. My parents were likely traveling, I do no remember why I had been left in the care of my mother’s brother and his wife. What I do remember is being in the bathroom with them as they were bathing and getting ready to go out. I remember my aunt taking the jar of suppositories from the medicine cabinet. She showed me the suppositories in the jar and explained she was going to give me one to help me go to the bathroom. I remember being across her lap as she sat on the toilet lid. I felt her spread my buttocks, insert the suppository, and her hand resting on me as she held the suppository in place. The sensation was very pleasant. I have no memory of the result.

The idea of the long thin ones make sense but then why didn't the manufacturer have a short length of wood, plastic, etc. thin rod rounded on the ends with one end just coated in the glycerin mixture. That would make more sense to me as I have done something similar already. Just wet the tip with water, and it will slip in with ease and one can work it in and out so it melts all around the area it touches. Glycerin soap you buy for soap making would also work well for this...

I got those too growing up . Anytime I had a stomach ache mom would get the thermometer and the suppositories from the refrigerator. I would lay on my stomach she took my temperature then slide in the long suppository and as it melted she would keep slowly pushing it in seemed to take for ever but they worked

I remember seeing the long thin glycerin suppositories in the blue jar. I think they were Squibb brand. I don’t remember them being used on me but I saw mom use them on my little brother. My youngest brother is 10 years younger than me and I assume what I saw with him as a baby was probably what they did to me. It seems to me that we got glycerin suppositories while we were in diapers and got enemas with the red bulb once we were potty trained.

I replied in another thread that my wife in SE Asia used long thin suppositories on our infant/toddler son. And that these apparently glycerin sticks had random chunks attached (I used the analogy of crystals of rock candy), but reading this thread it occurs to me -- could the chunks be natural formations of glycerin? Like crystal formation? I'm certainly no chemist, just theorizing: could they form naturally over the course of time in the container?

My mom used the long, thin suppositories on me. I remember they felt good, and were some of the first sensations I had of enjoying anal stimulation. I do remember that the jar they came in was labeled as "Children's Suppositories". Haven't seen 'em for sale in years.

@stiknclikit If the "chunks" are what I'm thinking of, they might just be beads of moisture that the glycerin pulled out of the air. That's what I've seen form on the suppositories in opened jars.

@LDB They've become much more rare but I believe they're still sold in a few countries.

My Mom used the long thin glycerin suppositories on me when I was less than 6 years old to stimulate a bowel movement on demand when she was toilet training me to use a potty rather than going in my diaper. She also used them if she had given me a dose of laxative at bedtime and it didn't make me go as soon as I woke up the next morning. Occasionally if she had run out of them she would use a soap stick carved from a bar of Ivory soap instead. After I turned 6 the switched to the adult size glycerin suppositories.
