Curvature of the spine

I forget the word for this kind of check . But I remember in high school it was the school nurse who did them .

Like physicals ever other year in school we were screened for a curvature of the back . A small or us were in the nurses office . We then stripped down to just are underwear. One by one the nurse seen us behind the screen . It took only a few minutes but I remember her procedure. We stood facing her keeping our shoulders level. Then it was time for each side. Turned to the left side then the right side. Finally bending forward her finger tips travelled down the spine to the low back region . Momentarily lingering below the waistband before concluding the exam .

I remember this in middle school. We all had to line up, actually two lines facing each other, in our underwear as the nurse went down the line and checked everyone.

I never got this in school, but my doctor checked every year during my annual exam. Before I was 14, I would just be in my panties. From 14 on, I was wearing a gown that opened in the back.

Don’t recall ever being checked for this, although I may have been. Recall one guy who was excused from gym classes due to spinal deformation issues. But he was athletically challenged and we all thought it a bogus excuse.

I was checked like this. I think the test was a Scoliosis check but I may be wrong

In Norway back in the 1960es the orthopedic check at school physicals happened similarly. But we were completely naked, which meant that the nurse or doctor could also look into our anal region when we stood bent foreward touching the floor. The nurse looked at us from behind suspiciously long with us in that position, asking me to adjust my position slightly several times and bend as much forward as possible.

The school physical did not contain any specific perineal check apart from this, but I guess the nurse used the opportunity to look for signs they could use to call us in for a thorough pelvic examination and check of development which actually happened to me,

By the way, some degree of kyphosis and lordosis is normal and necessary for the spine to work optimally. There is a harmful and to some extent racistic normality concept that depicts a totally straight spine as an ideal.

Scoliosis is actually pretty common among boys as well as girls. Most forms are mild enough to where no corrective measures are needed while some others, unless corrected by a brace or surgery, will result in deformity. I share with you this vintage photo of a young man that was taken, probably I'm guessing in the 1940s or maybe earlier? Note how on the middle photo of his rear, the crack separating his buttocks is not perfectly vertical. As a result, his left buttock is slightly pointed upward and his right, slightly downward. I remember the scoliosis check being done a couple times in junior high and high school. The girls had to go into the female PE teachers office and the school nurse checked each girl. Bras were left on. The strap didn't cover much and if need be it could be easily moved out of the way.

My school never did it and I have scoliosis- it wasn’t diagnosed until I was too old to do anything other than surgery and that’s still risky now. 40 years ago - nope.

Yes, I remember the school nurse checking for scoliosis in the locker rooms during PE. We had to be topless, bent over.

I attended a private Catholic high school so any type of medical issues were the responsibility of the parents however we did have a NP on staff. I got to know her well enough because I have asthma. A scoliosis check was part of my annual physical with my own doctor. I had to bend over and touch my toes while my doctor felt my back. She would then lower my underwear to check the base of my spine.

We had this at school, done separately from our main physical exam. We went into the gym as two groups, boys and girls and we're examined one at a time. Boys had to take their shirt off and girls did also but kept their bra on.

We had to stand up straight while the examiner looked at us from the front, back and both sides. We then had to lean forwards as though diving and place both hands together between our feet while the examiner would run their hand along our back from our neck to just above the waistband of our boxers. It was only a short exam that just took a couple of minutes each.

@scotty95 That is how it was done at my elementary school. The scoliosis exams were performed in the multipurpose room on the stage. I can’t remember if boys were examined separately from the girls though. Too long ago for me to remember the details. They did vision tests and hearing tests in the same place.

Scoliosis exam. For me, it was in either 7th or 8th grade. Boys and girls were done separately during PE class.

I was last in line for my class, and had to undress from the PE uniform (assigned shirt and shorts) to underwear. A few visual checks and bending over, etc behind a privacy screen was all it was.

I also had them in seventh and eights grades. i remember that i was aroused the whole time thinking about my gf having to strip to the waist to get her backed looked at.

I remember in school it was done in gym class. Doctor also checked when I was younger usually in underwear. When I was 18 Doctor checked while I was fully nude, he had me stand and bend over and I could feel him up against my butt.

For some reason, the mental image of a female touching their toes at a physical is one of the most arousing to me. Panties on, gown falling forward.

I remember having this done in school, but as part of a more general medical exam, rather than a standalone thing.

I don’t think I was told what the examination was for though, because I remember feeling like I had failed the test because I was unable to touch my toes. It’s only looking back now that I realize the act of touching my toes was simply to get me to bend over so the doctor or nurse could see my spine….

Scoliosis check always had in school medicals.

I remember when i was very young at school getting visits by the " nit nurse" where they checked your hair for lice. Also we had hearing and eye checks and jabs for measles ? Don't think we ever got the scoliosis check. if we did i don't remember.

I was in my high school's P.E. swim class and one day, after changing into swim trunks and meeting with the rest of the class by the pool, it was announced by the teacher that we would all be undergoing a scoliosis exam before going into the pool. We all had to return to the locker room and line up, one by one stepping up to the school nurse who looked over our backs, which were already shirtless since we were in our swimsuits; then she would have each one of us bend and try to touch our toes while she ran this plastic gauge device over the spine.

When my turn came, she grabbed my shoulders and positioned me, back facing her, then ran her fingers over the length of my spine, starting at my neck and going down to where my swim shorts started. She then told me to bend down and reach for my toes, which I did, and felt that plastic device on my back. She moved it down my spine, stopping at several places, and then following up by palpating with her hands over the place she stopped; which I hadn't seen her do to my classmates. She told me she was finished so I stood up and went back to the pool. Once all the students had returned, class resumed as normal. The exam probably only took up the first 20 minuets of a 2 hour class.

I was in the pool, doing whatever we were working on that day, when a person came in from the office and handed the teacher a note. She read it then walked over to the side of the pool that I was in and said that the nurse has sent for me, but didn't say for what, and that I should get dressed and go.

Now I was worried, so I quickly showered to get the chlorine pool water off me, dressed and headed to the nurses office. When I arrived, she was there alone and had me step in and close the door. She told me not to worry but wanted to recheck her scoliosis exam results. I couldn't help being nervous since I was singled out for a recheck and just said okay. Since I was dressed this time she had me take off my shirt and t-shirt and also undo my belt and the button and zipper on my jeans then lower them enough to expose my lower back. She again had me stand with my back to her and bend down. I felt that plastic device again and also her fingers as she went along once more starting at my neck and working down my back. When she reached my underwear she slid them down slightly exposing the top of my butt and touched the part of my spine that they had covered.

I was really anxious now, as that hadn't been done during the locker room exam, and also about the realization that I was bent over with my pants lowered and now my underpants too, but she finished at that point and told me that everything looked good and that I could get dressed. While doing that she said that she noticed the cement floor in the locker room was uneven and thought that maybe that changed my stance in there and that could have thrown off the results. She didn't see any problems in her office and no other reason to follow up, so once I was dressed she sent me on my way. Nothing more ever came of it.

I still wonder why, out of all the students that were examined that day on the same concrete floor, was I the only one singled out for a recheck?

When I was in 7th grade (age 12/13 in the US) the public health department came to school to do a scoliosis screening on our class. We weren't given any notice that this was going to happen; perhaps our parents knew. We just did as we were told. We reported to the locker room and were instructed to undress and put on our gym shorts (that were part of our gym class uniform) and socks. We could leave our underpants on underneath our gym shorts. We then lined up and a few public health nurses came into the boys locker room and did the screening (mainly instructing us to touch our toes as they ran their fingers down our spine). They did slightly pull down our shorts but not much and that was it. They girls did the same thing (wearing socks and gym shorts) in the girls locker room but they wore their bras until their exam and then they just had to unhook their bra and held onto it with their hands over their breasts. That was quite the image for a 7th grade boy's imagination!

Interestingly, I spoke to my older sister (who graduated from the same school I did years earlier) about it. She told me that when she had the scoliosis screening in 7th grade that the girls had to line up in just their bras and panties in the girls locker room. She said it was quite unexpected and traumatic for them. She said the not knowing it was going to happen was very frustrating to her and her friends.

The check for scoliosis or lordosis was a regular part of all mandatory school physical examinations , it was done at all middle or high school exams each year by a school nurse and a female doctor, since we were always stark naked in the 60's , it was performed in the nude, first by back and standing in front of them, then bending over and touching the toes like she slided her fingers all along the spine from the neck to the crack of the butt and just after by walking a few steps forward, on sides and downward and then at a short distance, the same visual inspection first standind by back and after bending over again to touch the toes.

And just two times on the first years of middle school, we had a special examination by an other female doctor with two other nurses and it was not at the nurse school's office but in a gym, we were instructed by the Pe teacher to undress in just briefs and to line up, and then it was practiced on each of us, standing first by back and then bending over and eventually with the hands touching the toes, each other boy in line could see since there was no partition at all, and the doctor instructed each boy to pull dow his brief at the midle of the crack of his butt, and even sometimes when she found that a boy was too reluctant to obey or too slow to pull down partially his brief, she pulled it completely under his butt at mid thigh like a punishment.
