Water off on the drill

Have you ever had the dentist flick the water off on the drill while preparing a cavity?

No, what should be the reason to drill without water cooling?

I once heard that it can even traumatize the tooth and damage the nerve.

With my dentist, I even have the feeling that he works with extra water cooling. When drilling, he always works very quickly, presumably he then prefers strong cooling before the drill runs hot.

Ironically, this means that drilling without anesthesia is quite painful because the cold deeply penetrates the tooth even before the drill touches the nerve.

At least they were dental visits that remained in memory for a long time ;-)

Dental drills operate around 150,000 rpm and get hot quickly. Water cools them and flushes out debris from drilling. Maybe flicking water off the drill verifies the drill is working properly.

I’m no dentist, just guessing.

It can be very hard to see very small areas with the water on.

I think that there are times where the infected tissue may need to be damaged so that it lays down new tissue.
