When I was young I don't really remember doctors talking oddly to me.
Growing up though, I have noticed that many nurses here where I live, have an annoying tendency to talk to older people as if they were still underage. And moreover adopt a higher, singsong tone of voice as if they were annoyed and bored by everything and had learned how to appear polite.
If anyone has ever seen and understood the ORR female exam videos, you'd have the perfect example of how condescending and childish this tone of voice sounds. When such nurses tell me to do something or assume a position, I have to suppress the urge to say 'Yes mother …'
Then again when I was young, I absolutely hated how dentists in the US talked to me. No matter what the dental issue was, they always acted like it was my own, express fault that I willingly had done something wrong to my teeth (even when I knocked out some front teeth during a football game). They always used an accusatory tone of voice and choice of words. Not to mention the glaring and staring as if trying to unnerve me into admitting my dental crime.
I absolutely loathed this and lost my respect for them.
Luckily when we moved to Belgium, the dentists didn't seem to play the accusation game. Having a dental problem was not a reflection on a person's personal character or integrity. They just wanted to do the job as quickly as possible and get paid. Nor moralizing thank goodness.
