Recent scientific research on the vagus nerve

As we know, the vagus nerve enervates many bodily systems and extends all the way from the brain down to the rectum & anus. This recent research appears to show that stimulating the vagus nerve can facilitate learning. I wonder if there's any connection to many of us “learning” to enjoy enemas as children since those enemas doubtless stimulated the vagus nerve, especially those that involved pre-lubrication with a finger inserted into the rectum. Digital-rectal massage is also a known treatment for intractable hiccups, thought to work by stimulating the vagus nerve.
