I remember getting the gas several times. I always knew I'd be getting gas as mom would call the ‘nurse’ who would look at my chart, tell mom what I'd likely need done and if she thought I'd be getting gas tell mom to give me an enema before we arrived. I remember going into the waiting room which was in an older office building, the rugs and couch and chairs and table lamps making it look like a living room, and the nurse, Miss ???, asking mom if I'd had an enema. Mom would tell her she'd given me a good enema and the nurse would say that was good just in case I was given gas.
When I was in the chair it would be the nurse who would sit on a stool beside me to do it. The dentist would always go off to work on another patient. The nurse would take my hand and ask in a quiet voice, ‘did your mom give you an enema before you came?’ I'd say ‘yes’ and she'd say that was good as she was going to give me a little gas and the gas would make me relax and that could lead to an accident if I'd not had the enema. She'd also tell me that it would likely be a good thing for me to have another enema at bedtime. “Will you remember to ask your mother for an enema or would you like me to tell her?” Then she'd hold up the rubber mask and say she was going to put it on my face and then she'd turn on the gas. “I'll tell you when the gas is started and I want you to take a couple of deep breaths in. Will you do that for me?” I'd say yes and she'd place the mask gently on my face and say, “Alright, take a deep breath for me, breathe in …. and again …..”
The next thing I knew she'd be sitting beside me rubbing my hand and telling me it was all over, the dentist had finished the filling, whatever it was he was doing. “In a few minutes you'll be ready to go home. I'll tell your mother about giving you an enema at bedtime, but I want you to remember to remind her. Will you do that for me? Remind her?” I'd reluctantly agree to remind mom to give me an enema and the nurse would smile.
This nurse was an older lady, but I think not married as she was Miss Something. At one point she was replaced by a younger nurse who also gassed me several times. Another story for another day.
To this day I've no idea why the enemas with the gassing except for what the nurse said about relaxing and an accident. I suppose possible but I've not heard of others getting enemas with gas. It certainly was part of the routine at Dr. Downs office though.
