Cleaning Tips ? - Hose/Tubing

What is the best way to keep your enema tubes clean. I noticed today that there seems to be some black mold inside some of my tubes. I want to clean them but don't know the best way. Help?? Please..

Have you tried a bleach and water solution to let that kill off the mold?

You can also feed a thin flexible wire through the hose, tie a very thin tube cleaning brush to the end of the wire and pull it through the hose, that along with the bleach and water solution previously mentioned will clean the inside of your hose very well.

A strong Clorox solution will clean black mold. Just let it soak for a half hour or so.

Every once in a while run some bleach and hot water through it.

Here is the procedure I use:

(1) Drain any remaining water from the bag and tubing.

(2) Close the clamp/valve.

(3) Pour 4 to 5 ounces of either Isopropyl Alcohol or Ethanol into the bag and close it.

(4) Shake the bag vigorously to pick up any remaining water.

(5) Hold the end of the tubing and tip over a sink or toilet and drain the alcohol from the bag.

(6) Once empty, disassemble the set.

(6) Shake as much of the residual alcohol out of the bag as you can.

(7) If the bag opening is large enough, use a washcloth to soak up the remaining alcohol.

[8] Hang the bag to dry.

(9) Drain as much of the alcohol from the tubing as you can.

(10) Hang the tubing vertically and allow to dry.

(11) Rinse the clamp in alcohol and air dry.

(12) If you use a valve soak in alcohol for about 15 minutes, then remove and allow to dry in the air.

(13) Allow 24 hours for drying to complete.

(14) If using a Higginson syringe disassemble the syringe and dry the valves in air as well as the bulb.

(15) If you have reusable tips, colon tubes, or other part that is potentially contaminated, clean it with soap and hot water, then soak in alcohol.

Before using the set in the future be sure to run at least one gallon of water through the bag, tubing, any valves, tips etc to wash out any denaturing agent used in the alcohol. I buy Everclear (190 Proof grain alcohol) from the ABC store.

To date I have not had an issue with mold or bacterial growth on any part of the bag, tubing, valves, Higginson syringe parts, or tips using this technique.

If you can remove the tube completely, nothing attached at either end, then I would recommend immersing it in a mild bleach solution, swirling it around to get all the air out, and let it remain there for at least 15 minutes. If you know anyone who owns a rifle such as a .22 and has a cleaning rod, the rod can be used to push/pull a cleaning patch through the tube. The bleach is a chemical solution, the cleaning rod would be a mechanical solution and would help break loose any mold adhering to the inside of the tube. The bleach might kill the mold, but not remove the recently-departed evil mold. To prevent a re-occurrence, make sure to air dry the tube thoroughly. A good way to do that would be to hang it vertically over an air vent, such as a floor heat register. I do not recommend using your mouth to attempt to blow water out the tube, as you are only introducing more warm moist air. If there is any hint of mold remaining, do NOT use the tube to introduce any solution into your body! And you can always not take any chances and buy a new tube,

I always flush out the hose and nozzle with a strong bleach solution,fantastik with bleach works great ! Then I flush out with very hot water and blow dry with compressed air.

We pick up new hosing, not silicone, at our local farm supply store. You buy it by the foot so you get the length you want.

Camelbak makes a brush with a long wire handle to clean their water bladder tubes. Here is an example. They sell a brush with it. This is what I use and it reaches the entire tube when cleaned from each end.

Rifle barrel brushes with brass ferrule extension rods are fairly handy for hose / tube brushing . . . •22 the ideal tubing brush which can be coated with soap slurry, reamed then rinsed out with warm running water directly from the tap faucet

Most rifling kits have 4 x 18" long polyglass extension rods . . .ample for a cleaner ream

Another Hose / Tube cleaning suggestion is to cut a 7 foot long piece of nylon twine and attach (centred) to a small piece of soft rag 4 inches long & drenched with soap slurry for ease of manipulating

Opposite end - secure a 3" to 4" hooked over piece of coathanger wire bent over very tight and compressed in a vise with the twine attached to it, which serves as a drop through weight piece

Hi! I use .22 caliber cleaning patches soaked in bleach to clean my hoses in hot water!

As another thought dont fart or backfull your enema bags or tubing! Then you wont have cleaning issues!

CPAP tube cleaning brush. They are 7 feet long an possibly a smidge tight going through, but with a soap residue as a lubricant can to a marvellous job
