Required to get in a gown for mri?

I've always been given hospital pants or shorts and a shirt like scrubs.

He also gave me hospital socks.

dont know why socks cant be worn?

Some clothing materials can be slightly metallic or contain metals from the environment, detergent chemicals, softener, etc. They don't want to risk any source of interference with the machine, especially near the part being imaged.

I have had 2 over the past 5 years. 1st one was given scrubs and told to remove all clothing I came with. Second was a gown and same instructions. Different places as well. I asked about underwear and the tech said they require it off because they had someone come in when they allowed it that had a metal tag on their underwear. So now they don't take the chance.

I had one about 6 months ago, at an outpatient facility, and just wore what I came in with. Sweat pants shorts and a T-shirt. No mention of gowns or anything. Didn't even have me take my sneakers off. It was for my lower back, so my upper body and head wasn't in the machine. She gave me a set of headphones, asked what kind of music I like, and I got to listen to Merle Haggard for the duration. Can't beat that.

Seems to vary from lab to lab and/or what they are imaging. We’ve seen it both ways, very by the book or very loose.

It's more than interference. There can be enough induced current to cause burns. See case study at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6734033/

I had a MRI about 10 years ago and one more recently. 10 years ago was much more relaxed - the recent one they had any clothing that would be in the machine off and replaced by provided, known-safe clothes and then they used a sensitive metal detector wand before we even went in the room.

I had one 5 years ago and another this year both on the upper part of my body to rule out heart problems. Removed my shirt and belt because of the buckle. Apparently the wires they used to put my chest back together after heart bypass surgery is not a problem.

Most MRI images are taken at .5 - 1.5 Tesla. Improved imaging can be obtained with a 3T and/or dye enhanced image. Recently, at the Univ of Minnesota they tested a machine that imaged at 10.5 Tesla. The higher the power, the more likely a reaction between the skin and contact with anything metal. At the lower levels, you might feel a slight vibration (I was told by a tech) - at the higher levels you can sizzle.

Someone with a pacemaker, aneurism clips - or other metallic prosthetics are screened prior to getting in the tube. Some of the more modern prosthetics are titanium or other not magnetic material and are safe. For example, a metallic aneurism clip that is magnetic sensitive (common prior to 1970 or so) will not be allowed in the MRI due to the possibility of clip displacement. A titantanium clip is safe up to 4.7 T

Dexpending on the exam and the equipment being used may drive the dress code for an MRI. Some labs just play it safe and require gowns or hospital dress for all MRIs

Yes - even though I intentionally wore clothes without metal they insisted I change into their gown.

I been having routine MRI's ever since I was 8…till this day, 2x a year. And never have I been in a gown for the exam itself.

The place I went to gave a gown and asked to remove everything except underware.

I've had a few MRIs over the past few years and I think all but the first had me in a gown of some kind

I've had a couple of MRI scans but didn't have to strip down. I just had to wear clothes without metal in - I wore a t-shirt and trackie bottoms, and kept my shoes and socks on - and had to empty my pockets and take my chain and watch off into a tray.

I've had a few recently and it really depended on where I went. One place let me keep my clothes on, when they realized they did not have metal in them, and the others made me change into a gown. But, at least they gave me scrub pants to wear! lol

I have had a few MRI's on my legs they gave me paper shorts to wear. I had a prostate MRI little over a year ago I had to go into room and put on gown. When guy came to get me he said I needed to lose underwear.

I have a lot of platinum coils and have been in a 3T MRI. They had me keep my underwear on but change from my sweatpants to some huge paper type exam pants.

I was given a panic button to hold and told to push it if my coils started feeling warm. He said they rate them as safe for one coil but I have over 10 so he was curious if I’d feel anything. I was fine.

@soundcurious that's a shame.

I recently had a pelvic mri and I had to remove everything and while they were getting me ready I felt one of the techs hands adjust my gown and her hand ran over my penis. It seemed to be accidental.

I have a brain mri every year and they let me stay in my clothes. I make sure to wear clothes with no metal and remove all my jewelry before I get there.

I underwent an MRI scan of my back. Before the scanning room, there was a changing room where a nurse directed me, instructing me to leave behind all metal items, including phones and bank cards. A hospital gown and an absorbent brief (diaper) were waiting on a bench in the room; the nurse told me to change out of all my own clothes into the hospital gown and to put on the absorbent brief if I experienced incontinence. I changed while the nurse waited outside the door. Once I was ready, the door to the changing room was locked, and the key remained with the assigned nurse for the duration of the scan.

I’ve only ever had one MRI but it was a mega one, they scanned me from head to toe and it took a while, I was in my own clothes, jeans t shirt socks , I did not have to remove anything, they asked if I had any metal objects in my pockets I didn’t, I’ve heard of experience’s in UK where they need to completely strip and wear a gown, I’ve heard of people just having it done in sportswear at their own comfort level. My own common sense tells me if the MRI can scan through skin and bone it can see through your clothing. No one is going to convince me that all these other precautions are necessary clearly it’s rules fur rules sake.

It has little to do with the machine's ability to visualize and everything to do with safety. The level likely depends on how much the practice/hospital trusts the patients to know what will cause a problem and to deal with it. It's possible that the ones that are "everything off and put this on" have had problems in the past with people swearing that they had no metal and there was a little bit somewhere - and any can cause injury or property damage of very expensive things.

I have had several types of scans, particularly MRIs and CT scans, mostly abdominal and pelvic. The reason is just to be absolutely sure there is no metal or metallic fabric present. They use the same procedures for all. Usually you would remove your clothing (underwear is often allowed to stay on) and given either a gown or scrubs. (At least that is how it is done around here) For CT scans, on several occasions I have simply been told to lay on the table and lift/remove my shirt, then pull my pants, and sometimes underwear, at least to mid-thigh under a sheet, then to pull them back up when the scan is done before the sheet is removed and I can get up. The reason to do it under the sheet is a modesty thing, of which I have none, but that is protocol. It's nott a control thing, it's simply to egt the best scan without interference or the possibility of causing injury.

I had an MRI scan to see what was going on with my prostate. I had to undress but was able to leave my underwear and socks on before putting on cotton scrubs.

I have for one and haven't for another. For one, the tech just looked at my clothes and said that I was already dressed appropriately so I just did it in that. For the other one, I got told to disrobe completely except socks and underwear. I was taken to a locker room of sorts, with lockers on the wall and a bathroom, and a waiting area with seating, and then some curtained off sections to disrobe. Did as I was told, stripped and put it in a locker and waited on a couch. There was another guy there already stripped down. When they came and got me I walked across the hall in the gown to the MRI machine and then came back to the room to get dressed when I was done.

I’ve never had an MRI but a girl I know had one a few days ago and she said she was required to undress completely but they made her take everything back to her car her earrings and other jewelry and phone and everything which sucked because she was going to record herself undressing for me and then redressing afterwards.

Never had a MRI but lots of CT scans. Was put on the table with clothes on and covered with a sheet. Then I was told to pull up my shirt and lower my pay and underwear to knees. The worst part is when they inject the dye you feel warm all over and like you are peeing. I just always wanted to know what exactly they see.

I get yearly brain MRI's - always everything off except underwear and get disposable cloth-like pants and top, and socks with the rubber nonslip on the soles. I have a titanium rod in my femur from over 25 years ago and its never been a problem.

Here on Long Island, NY about two years ago, it wasn't a patient but her husband who broke protocol and died for it. He was wearing a heavy chain with a padlock around his neck, which was a thing for him, and he entered the MRI room through a restricted BUT unsecured door (lawsuit). He was violently sucked into the machine and killed. I honestly wonder why these facilities do not have airport style metal detectors to keep everyone, including visitors, from bringing metal into the inner areas of facility. It would be simple to provide lockers or other secure storage for items before allowing people into the area.

Anytime I have had an MRI I was required to change into a gown in a dressing room and I was able to keep my underwear on.
