I heard a story on NPR a few months ago and it made me smile. As much as I've thought about being a girl from time to time and aside from halloween and my own private idaho, I never had the "balls" to really pursue it.

But in this story, you hear from a real doctor who has taken the most positive approach (along with one who doesn't) as well as hearing the story from the parents side.

Not only that, but there is hormone therapy to hold off puberty to buy time. (well, you might have known but I didn't!) The ones who get to transition are so much happier and it buys everyone time to make what is obviosuly a very tough and life changineg (let alone nearly-irreversable) decision.

I am happy to be who and where I am now and honestly, I think my desire to be female is hormonal - a fun and erotic way to escape - but it's not 24/7. Same with diapers.

I totally disagree with Zucker. His way of treating a child is going to cause more problems when just letting them live their lives the way they want to. Parents put too much importance on one gender or the other. What difference does it make if your son wants Barbies or your daughter wants trucks. They are just toys. Get over it. Let the child play with what they want. Letting boys play with dolls isn't going to make them gay. I played with my sister's Barbies and their toys. I'm not gay and I think I'm a well adjusted person. So I prefer to be a girl instead of a boy like I was born as. I also disagree with Zucker's generalization of Transgender people. Not all of us want to go though the lifelong hormonal treatment or the surgery. Some might want that. I for one don't. That is like saying all blondes are airheads. Some might be, but not all of them are.

thanks for checking out the story and writing back. Didn't you feel soo conected to the boy who was allowed to be a girl? Isn't it just precious that she knew who she wanted to be and that her parents let her be AND that she did well in school and had friends and everything?

Yes I feel connected to the boy who was allowed to be a girl. He seems alot happier than the boy who Zucker treated. I used the word treated loosely. To me it seemed more like mental abuse and the parents continued the abuse at home. I feel sorry for that boy. I can't say for sure, but with him confused as to who is he. This could lead to depression and possibly trying to kill himself. Where as the boy who was allowed to be a girl. He will probably grow up well adjusted and would feel loved. As he gets older. He might decided that he doesn't want to be a female anymore and that is fine too. Parents like that boy's and mine are a rare thing. Most parents would probably be like the other boy's parents. Force him out of being a girl and force him into a life and gender he isn't comfortable with.

I know I am catching up to this thread late but I want to say that I am a product of the Zucker treatment. I am filled with regrets of how I was not allowed to be me when I was young. I long painfully for memories of wearing my favorite floral dress to school on the first day of class. Or the beautiful prom dress I had. Oh how much I wanted to be just like the girls. Today it still hurts. I can tell you something els, I have, many times, gone out dressed as Laura and those are the best times I have had with my friends.

I also feel connected to the boy who was allowed to be a girl. When I moved in with my aunt, she started dressing me like a girl. It was strange for me at first, but I did tend to play with girls, and with girls' toys. I was 11, and my younger cousin was 8. She and I would play together with her dolls, and I always related better to younger girls than I did to boys of any age. I didn't object at all to wearing girls cloths. The first thing was a nightie, then after a while a skirt, and when I was out of diapers in the daytime, she started putting panties on me. My first sexual experience was at age 12 with a 14 year old boy. I think at that point was I really knew that I belonged in girls cloths, and that I was really more girl than boy. By that time, I was dressing like a girl almost all of the time. I didn't wear dresses to school, but I did wear panties, and I would change into a dress as soon as I got home.
