Do you prefer plastic or paper backed diapers?

I came a cross a post on verious websites including Quora.com quite a few years ago and it basically asked do you prefer do you prefer plastic or paper/Fabric backed diapers/nappies.

Here's my honourest response.

Personally speaking I prefer plastic backed ones because they are more absorbent better fitting and most resemble the ones from my youth.

However this is just my opinion here's a break down of each type and it's pros and cons.

Type: Traditional plastic backed

Advantages: More absorbant and less prone to leaks, more like the original ones.

Cons: not environmentally friendly, gets hot and sweaty, loud and noisy less breathable.

Type: Fabric backed

Advantages: more environmentally friendly, less noisy not as hot and sweaty breathable.

Cons: Less absorbent and prone to leaks, orders are not contained as well, don't fit as well as the plastic ones.

As I see it no diaper/nappy in the world including the reusable type is 100% environmentally friendly as even the washable type takes electricity water and creates pollution.

However wearing diapers/nappies is better than not wearing them at all.

I am a switch hitter .

Cloth at home and overnite, when going out I wear disposables plastic backed .

I don't have any confidence in the cloth backed “Velcro like ” closures everytime I tried them they haven't kept my diaper secure .

Absolutely prefer the plastic backed disposables, if you have a BM accident the smell is better contained and I think they leak less (my opinion only) and they have a nicer feel to them against your skin.

With ‘Paper backed’ in disposables, I assume the fake cloth texture outer shell is being referred to.

I absolutely prefer smooth plastic 100%.

It feels better, looks better, and contains smells better.

I find the whole “cotton feel” thing in disposables absolutely horrible.

Plastic. Period. End of discussion lol. Anything else leaks.

My preference would be for plastic backed diapers. :-)

I will echo what most people have said: the “cloth” backed disposables are awful. I've never really understood why this was even developed. They tend to sag, and the cloth-like outer shell seems to wick some moisture, effectively creating a “leak”..

Give me crinkly plastic backed diapers any time that I'm not in a real cloth diaper.

I HAVE TO wear ONLY the traditional, old school, PLASTIC backed diapers, exactly, like the Pampers I was raised in during the 80s. Have to.

I have given the cloth-like diapers quite a few tries. It’s not that I do not want to like them, I do want to, but, just do not want them on me. They just outright do not cut it for me. I guess, psychologically, we tend to go with what we know. And that is that.

I do agree, the crinkling noise, and the diapers I wear are real loud, can get very scary, but, I have to have that. Yes, people nearby, definitely, have picked up on it, especially, when I am roaming around in very quiet areas. They get real loud, but, that is just how it is.

Oh, and Dark Wuff brings up a huge point I did not realize. The plastic backed diapers, cosmetically, do look A LOT better on us.

I prefer plastic backed whether I am wearing plastic pants or not. Seeing as how I am wearing a diaper and plastic pants on a nightly basis.

My usual bedtime routine is an enema before bed to help with not pooing in my diaper. When I wake up mommy-wife cleans me and puts a fresh nappy on me, and while she breastfeeds me, I use my clean diaper.

Definitely plastic backed.

The thickest, the most babyish, the better.

I prefer the real thing, cloth diapers and of course my rubber pants so my panties don't get wet. I love my cloth diapers so much that I also like doing my diaper laundry, hanging my diapers outside to dry in the sun, which keeps them white and nice smelling, and then folding my diapers and stacking them in under my changing table. I also love my many colored and cartoon character rubber pants.

Depends on my mood.

My 2 favorite types of diapers are kids overnight pullups and big, puffy, crinkly adult diapers with tabs.

I like how comfy and snug kids pullups are and how cute they look. They're also somewhat discreet which can be fun. I love how they feel and smell when they're wet.

Wearing a big puffy adult diaper makes me feel 100% like the diaper lover that I am. The feel of the thick diaper… hearing the crinkle it makes… making sure the tabs are stretched out so the diaper is snug. I like watching it get wet… the blue line disappearing. Keeping it on even after a big pee knowing it won't leak and will hold more. I like how it smells too but it seems to hide the smell or at least keeps it inside the diaper… kids pullups smell a lot as soon as they get wet which I like better. Adult diapers seem to hide most of the smell… my hand smells amazing after slipping it underneath though! 😉

Plastic-backed, no question. They don't smell as bad and they hold together better.

Plastic-backed. Cloth-like just doesn't have that plastic crinkle.

Definitely prefer the plastic backed as they fit and perform better, however some of the newer high capacity brands do seem to have cut down on leaking issues and it is nice to have tapes that can be easily adjusted

Around the house and at night I prefer cloth diapers. Out in public plastic back diapers

I prefer plastic backed with plastic pants during the day. I have tried the cloth backed and they don’t hold as much are not as waterproof and leak quickly. I wear ATN during the day. At night being a side sleeper, my wife pins on 2 cloth diapers and tight fitting rubber pants which keep the bed dry.

Absolutely plastic-backed. Cloth-backed ones just don't have the right feel (slippery) or sound (crinkling) and they are too far removed from my childhood experience.

So here's a thought about these “cloth”- backed diapers. There are about 20 answers here, and they all say that if you're going to wear a disposable diaper, plastic backed it is! So though this is a VERY tiny statistical sample, it would appear that diaper-wearers prefer overwhelmingly plastic backed if they are going to wear a disposable. The thought I am considering is that if there seems to be such an overwhelming dislike of these diapers among those who actually wear the diapers, why do they keep making them?

The babies whose parents put them in these abominations can't speak out, but we can….

Good question eddyj, CVS, Walgreens and the rest only sell cloth backed disposables so if you want plastic backed you have to order them on line. Like eddyj I wonder why cloth back are so popular. Like others here I prefer plastic back but if only cloth back are available use plastic pants over them.

I normal wear terry nappies and plastic baby pants but if I use a disposable it has to be plastic backed

I prefer the crinkle of a diaper. Whether it be a disposable with plastic backing, or a cloth diaper with a distinct crinkle noise of plastic/rubber pants! To me, the crinkle is extremely babyish, it let's those who may hear it think about what they are hearing.

Started with plastic back, but found they made me sweat, so switched to cloth back and now more comfortable!
