The punishment will be imposed not by an executioner, but by a city council official. That clerk is, of course, me. I go to the house of the culprit. I start my visit by talking to her husband, and his wife brings us a beer. She is scared and ashamed.
After the conversation, I read the sentence again. It says that the townswoman will receive 30 strokes on the exposed buttocks with a birch rod. The woman, ashamed, lowers her head. I lift her head with my hand and say, looking into her eyes, that the punishment will be severe for her to feel pain, but mild enough not to permanently damage her body. We enter the room where the punishment is to be imposed.
