Do school doctors give gynaecological examinations during school time?

My partner recently made note that her school had given gynaecological examinations during her time at a private school where she was boarding. The exams were very similar to her experiences as an adult now although it was more of a group system. Up to six girls would arrive, undress and queue up. They would each in turn be taken by the nurse behind a curtain to the doctor.

For her and many of her school friends, it was the first time anyone had seen or touched their vagina, inside or out.

Does this still occur in private schools?

It is the first that I hear about such exams in Western Europe. I doubt that it is still common practice, but you never know.

@DrMatt Were they given an explanation what would happen during these exams? Did they had to wait naked, together with the other girls? How old was she? Were the other girls able to hear what happened behind the curtain, including the more intimate questions?

I really dont see how they could do this today in any private schools. It would go against so many ethical and safeguarding policies. Alongside the media frenzy that would follow.

Sounds like your partner may have been one of the last few to get these at the private school. Although im not saying it doesn't happen still behind closed doors etc etc, Its not going to be as easy to get this under the radar and telling people its the normal.

Medicals are still conducted at some private schools, especially boarding schools, certainly on admission, and possibly other occasions. I have no idea how thorough they are these days.

Yes. it does, and I think the practice is even growing, and boys have exams of the same category too. I know it because I have collected real-life medical histories through polls for many years. I have a lot of these histories from all parts of the world. By comparing the responses, I can see that they are so coherent that they cannot be just fantasy. In many cases it seems that the examinations also are done as a part of medical research projects. The gynecological part is also usually just one piece of a more extended exam ordeal.

OK, this was in the 1990s. Sorry, I didn't state that before. It was an extensive medical test. it lasted around an hour but wasn't confined to the medical room. There were physical strength tests, running and endurance tests but also dental, vision and scalp check she recalls. To answer some additional questions; she undressed with a group of around 6 girls and then they queued together. They went in in twos because there were two doctors. She was 16 at the time and could hear her friend talking to the doctor but she was busy with her doctor, and she doesn't remember much. She thinks it was when she moved from the lower school to the upper school.

I don't know about private schools, but, sadly, medical exams in state schools in the UK no longer take place routinely.

Based on an extensive corpus of testamonials and intelligence material I have gathered, I can conclude as follows.

Generally, medical exams in schools have declined to nearly nothing in many countries. But around the world, including, UK, Germany, Norway, USA, Canada, France, certain schools seem to be elected as sites for medical research and population surveillance by a consortium of public authorities, medical companies, universities and research organizations.

In these schools the frequency, thoroughness intrusiveness and end temporal endurance of the exams have increased manifold to what was common in the 1960es, 1970es and 1980es.

Some of these schools are indeed public schools, but most are private , or schools with special curriculum, like sport and dance. Montessori schools are especially heavily involved.

The parents are mostly made to agree by offerings of free medical care for the kids, money offers or agreement of participation in the exam program is mandatory to let the kid go to that school.

Some countries or some communities within several countries has such a general authoritarien culture that these extended exam programs are done without any prior agreement. Some communities where the authorities have a hysterical approach for everything they think of as child abuse, also perform such exams to detect any symptom that might signal abuse.

In Norway, where I am from, the common exam program for kids is not very extensive. But any symptom of something with the kid not conforming to a strict standard, will result in the kid being called in to a sequence of very intimate and intrusive exams, physically and mentally, often done under general anesthesia so that neither thee kid nor the parents are fully aware of what happens.

Also Norway tend to run great projects for medical surveillance of kids, where a certain percentage of the kids in the country are called in, or one elect one specific area. Usually the parents are asked to volunteer their kid for the project, and most parents answer yes, either because the Norwegian people has been effectively brainwashed to blidly trust authorities, or because they fear revenge if they answer no.

This seems strange to me. Just doing general anesthesia to do some research? Anesthesia is never without risk. That is the reason that there are specialist that are doing the Anesthesia full time.

My Wife who is now in her 70's had a School medical before she left for work at 16 and it did involve a look down her panties, although not a gynecological examination.

She was undressed to just her panties but allowed to put her blouse back on with no bra. The doctor opened and lifted her blouse for the examination and when she was on the exam bed, pulled the front of her panties down for a good look. She was really embarrassed not expecting that and had her Mother in the exam room too.

My school was one of the early tests of the concept of a "school based health clinic." You can Google that. It's a program that exists today. The idea is that in large schools, particularly in low-income areas where kids may only see a health provider through school, a fully functioning doctor's office is preferable to the standard nurse's office.

Anyway, I definitely saw gyno stirrups on the table in at least one of the exam rooms there because it became, of course, the subject of jokes among boys. I'm sure that some girls had gynecological exams there - possibly even their first such exams.

There was nothing like that in the grade schools and high schools where I was raised. Nothing like that in Illinois, Indiana or Michigan either. Not that I recall anyway? Private Schools? I have no idea!

Such things happened in France in the 1940s-1950s (perhaps even 1960s), in reform schools run by Catholic nuns, and the goal was to check that the girls were still virgins (even though officially this was perhaps presented as checking for venereal diseases). The examination could be administered by a nurse nun or a medical doctor. Former inmates mention it in very sad testimonies.

I've also heard of such things happening pre-WWII in boarding school or "finishing schools" for the upper classes - again the goal was to certify the girls were virgins and thus proper brides.

I can't see that happening in the U.S. but I can't speak for other countries and I've never been in a private boarding school. Sounds a bit suspect though.

There are actually many schools around the world, including USA where there are health centers integrated in the school wich also examine kids intimately in an intrusive way, which means exams where instruments are put into the pelvic openings of both boys and girls. Weather these exams are mandatory well-child exams or only for special cirumstanses, I think vary from community to community.

Here is a picture of an examination room of such an school-based health center/clinic. You see an examination table, and beside that table in a prominent position is an ultrasound set with one probe for external use and one for internal use in vagina or anus. The set also has a lamp suited to illuminate the pelvic area. The exam table is of a modern kind that looks very innocent at the first glance, but it has shielded stirrups that can be folded out. Furthermore, this is in an elementary school, which means that they seem to be permanently prepared to perform pelvic exams on young kids.

But according to my research, these exams are not traditional gynecological exams, but general pelvic exams with a high degree of external and intrernal development monitoring, where such an ultrasound set is perfectly suited.

With the extarnal probe it is possible to get a picture of organs like bladder, testicles, penis, vulva, pelvic muscles, pelvic joints. With the internal probe inserted through the anus one can get a good cross-section picture of all internal pelvic organs of both boys and girls.

That the set has got such a prominent position is by itself a hint that these exams are mandatory for all kids at that particular community.

Somebody here mentioned to me (but I don't know about the reliability of it) that, during teen age, girls in his Australian school undergoing a physical were given a pelvic exam and the practice was ceased due to protests from parents.

This sounds preposterous, but at the same time there is definite evidence (there have been inquiry commissions and trials about it) that in some Australian reform schools for girls, there were forced pelvic exams under the guise of detecting STDs in "wayward" girls.

Not in our area of Iowa. Such exams would be done elsewhere.

I think the days of those kinds of exams happening at any school where the kids are under 18 would be very rare in the US and Canada because of recent revelations of decades of abusive doctors. There is no longer any need to do a pelvic exam for routine std screening. any parent that wouldn’t instruct their daughter to refuse that kind of exam would be doing a disservice at the very least by having them sent off to a boarding school without knowing appropriate vs inappropriate exams.

Even in the US - or perhaps, particularly in the US - I wouldn’t be surprised to see this trend of more robust and intrusive medical care growing.

Now, the private school situation I can more understand. They need to ask permission of the parents, but particularly with boarding schools or ones that cater to more wealthy and “busy” families, being able to get someone else to take care of such things may have some appeal. Less so today than the past, I would guess, but still seems likely.

The US over the past couple of decades has attempted to bring more and more into the scope of public schools as a way to address external societal failings. Neighborhoods where kids don’t have great health care? School-based health centers! Not getting 3 square meals a day? School meal programs!

Hope that didn’t veer off topic too much. I’m not sure a universal approach to health care and exams via schools would succeed right now - but I definitely expect to hear more initiatives like the one linked to above!

If this happened, even just some instances, then you can bet your boots that the fundamentalist, conservative crowd would be screaming their heads off and making sure that exaggerated versions were on media sites and news everywhere. C'mon, kids and their parents nowadays are prudish snowflakes when it comes to nudity and such.

But since I notice a deafening silence on this particular subject, I doubt that this really happens.

I guess religious based schools make up their own rules to whatever suits them best. Besides, for the religious/conservative/fundamentalist crowd, such schools can do no wrong anyway. they get a pass on anything that would have the same group screaming bloody murder if it happened in public schools.

And perhaps I'd say that while both involves looking at and inside female genitals, a virginity check is essentially different from a medical gyn exam. At least in intention. One checks for 'damaged' goods and the other is intended to check on health and well-being.

I've heard accounts of this happening for example the East Stroudsburg scandal of exams without parental consent knowledge back in the 90s I think.

I'd never allow it should the school of my family include it in any sort of health check. We have our own trusted dr I'd never want some stranger a school picks to do so.

I do hope really hope its no longer a thing.
