Bladder training before foley removal!

Hi!

Any catheter users here with bladder training experiences? I mean clamping the catheter to stop the flow, and let the bladder fill a bit, and release.

I've read about it from nursing blogs, but never heard from someone, who experienced it.

As for me... I like to feel the fullness while cathed. It generates very strong urge for me.

I guess you would need a really soft one? Never tried but I doubt I could do it.

I will wear a catheter and use a plug on the end of it. When I have to go pee, I will just aim it over the toilet and pull the plug and drain my bladder, and then put the plug back in. I have worn a catheter with a plug in it for days and have gone shopping, to work, did chores around the house, and slept with it in. Maybe the only thing that I noticed is that I may have the urge to go pee a bit more often since the balloon on the catheter takes up some of the space in my bladder.

I've always wondered why more people don't do this? I think having a bag to deal with is a fairly inconvenient, and unsightly. There must be a medical reason. Anyone like to comment?

I got a bad infection in one of my testicles by doing exactly that. My left nut swelled to the size of a (large) grapefruit. It put me in the hospital for a week last May. It’s now October, and it’s still twice the size of my other testicle. It can cost you a testicle, possibly both.

May I ask you how you got that? Infection?

I always plug my catheter for an hour or so before I remove it in order to flush out any contaminates that might be in my bladder.

Last summer, I had a latex Foley in for about a week, during which time it was connected to a leg bag during the day and a bed bag overnight. Unlike prior times, this time the removal was done by a Urology nurse. I was not expecting the treatment I got.

She opened a bottle of sterile saline and poured some into a sterile basin, then sucked up a full 60ml syringe of the solution and set it aside. Then she disconnected the catheter from my leg bag, let all the residual pee drain out from me, and then injected the syringe full of saline into my bladder, and repeated this procedure with two more syringe fulls. Then she deflated the catheter balloon and pulled out the catheter. The saline felt cool and I had some urge to pee.

She then sent me across the hall to the toilet and had me pee on a Uroflow commode, 3which measured the pee flow rate and volume. After peeing, the nurse scanned my ladder to see if I'd emptied properly.

The saline fill and flush not only verified that I could pee without the Foley but also flushed out the plumbing.

Do not CUM with a large Foley Catheter inserted if you do you can get epididymitis most times the left ball gets a infection in it you can treat with Antibiotics...Pull your Catheter before you Cum ...have not got a infection since i started pulling it out....

I have never done that. I just deflate the balloon and the remove the catheter. I have found I have to pee a lot after the catheter comes out, but I don't plug it or flush my bladder at all. I would like to fill my bladder like the nurse did to Sean, but I would need too much stuff to do it and I would then worry about getting a UTI in the end. I find it would be nice to have some warm saline solution pumped into my bladder to find out how much I could hold. Don't think that will happen anytime soon.

I guess with the amount of water and other liquids that I drink, plus the diuretics that I take, I produce enough urine to flush my bladder out.

I have not gotten any infection when I masturbate with a catheter in, but I also had a vasectomy many years ago and now being an old man, not much fluid comes out when I masturbate.I am sure it can happen given some people have had it happen to them. My urologist's nurse said not to masturbate with a catheter in me, so there is that caution.

While having a leg bag or an over night bag can be inconvient, it is necessary. Yes a bag is a bit unsightly, yet there are about 20 to 40 million people in the USA with over active bladders, thus the reason for all the drug ads, incontance product ads. You have to remember that peeing is a bodly function and what goes into your body has to come out somehow. There is big money in making those products and their use. I have used Depends a lot in the last 5 years. A catheter is cheaper, easier and catheters do work well. Yes you get some leakage now and then, from what I have read and the videos that I have watcched, everyone who uses a catheter has an occasional leak. From what I have read and now having some kidney issues, you don't want the urine to back up to your kidneys. That can cause some great problems with your kidneys and that is why you want the urine to drain out of your bladder.

Since we can't see into our bladders, how much urine retained is OK and how much urine is too much to retain? We don't know. Sure we feel that we have to pee, yet if the wrong germs get to the kidneys, the result can be really bad. That is why I don't use a plug and just go to the toilet when I feel like I have to go with a plug in my catheter. It is much easier and safer to have to drain a leg bag than to spend time in the hospital trying to fight a kidney infection. Are leg bags a pain in the ass, sure thing, but I would be making as many trips to the bathroom using a plug as I would without a catheter. An over night bag is somewhat freeing since you don't have to worry about draining it till morning. Yes you have to deal with the tubing to it, but the freedom to get a good night's sleep is far better than having to get up every hour or hour and a half to go pee and get back to sleep. Sure you know the bag or tubing is there, but to be able to sleep the night through is wonderful. If you don't put out a lot of urine, you can wear a leg bag all night.

With a catheter in me, I can shower, do just about everything I always do. Can't take a bath, don't have a bath tub in this house, go swimming in the lake, which is just 40 feet away, or use a hot tub, which I don't have. Other than that, I don't worry about anything if my leg bag straps show, or anything else. In the winter where I live, I am so bundled up, no one sees my leg bag or even knows I have a catheter in me.
