Taking the strap

A number of times I've run across the phrase, 'take the strap' as in:

"You're going to take the strap right now young man/lady!"

"At bedtime I'll come up and you're going to take the strap."

"If you don't smarten up, you're going to take the strap."

"I've decided you're going to have to take the strap."

"Did you have to take the strap?"

"I know I'm going to take the strap when I get home."

"Sometimes it's better to take the strap than be grounded."

"When you get home I want to talk to you about you taking the strap."

"I know you don't want to take the strap but it seems to be the only thing you'll listen to."

"I'm sorry, but you're to come with me ... you're going to take the strap."

"When Jenny got home, did she take the strap?"

"All three of them today had to take the strap."

You get the idea. I'd be interested to know if this phrase is one others have encountered and how it was used and in what circumstances.

Never heard of this phrase, and glad I didn't growing up in the 1950's when spankings were common place. I was given the back of the Fuller Brush brush. One of my father's friends was telling him he should use his belt on me; while he almost did a few times, it never happened.

I never heard the term take the strap, but I did hear you are going to get the strap. My father used the strap for discipline most of the time. It hurt like hell and when he was done your entire backside was fire engine red.

Ditto my house. Got it once and it left an impression. Physically and mentally. Actually anger against my dad ?. The next day or so my dad put a basketball net up on the garage. I threw the ball away and never used it. I was into sports, but not basketball.

Yes. Have heard the saying many times when younger, both mom and dad didn’t hesitate to tell you what was going to happen in that instance. As I progressed other girlfriends and friends would use the same saying.

Reddevil I can identify with what you say. I have read people say when they're in a car crash it all happened so fast, yet as it was happening it was almost like slow motion. I've experienced the feeling of helplessness, and fear both when I've been spanked and when I've known others are about to get it. I'm not as nice a person as you though. Up to what age were pupils strapped at school? Did girls get it, or just the boys? Was it applied by a female, or male teacher? Would you be strapped in the classroom, in the hall, in a special room, or? How many would you get on each hand?

I went to school grades k-8 from 1970-78 in a small town in Ontario. The strap was administered by the Principal (female nun) or Vp (male) in their office a black rubber strap about a foot long. You were made to put your hands out and would get 2-3 hard smacks on palm. On many occasions you would get it with others but only one in the office at the time. Both male and females got it as I know my wife who at the time was a grade behind me got it twice. Hi Mountie, Thanks for your reply. I have read with interest accounts of school strappings in Canada. The sort of strap seems to be much the same across the country. I wonder if they were all made by the same 'manufacturer.' I'd not think it was a high volume sales item. Lots in classrooms and offices. Not likely to wear out though. I talked once to a teacher in Alberta who had taken a school strap home for use with his two daughters by himself and his wife. He said he knew from staff room talk a couple of other teachers had also taken straps home. The others were all women he said. He said not to read too much into that. 90% of the teachers were women in the first place. One difference he did point out was his experience was women principals tended to use the strap considerably more often than male principals and while male principals would virtually never strap a girl and on the rare occasions when it had to be done would allocate the job to a female, the female principals were much more likely to decide to strap a girl. Not sure about other schools but in ours the strap was given by the principal or vp. I would say that back then 80% of the elementary teachers were female. I know they all supported use of the strap and many used corporal punishment with their own kids. There was this one young teacher she must have been 25 at the time told a female student who just got the strap "well if your parents are like mine were you will likely have a hard time sitting down tomorrow". I have had exchanges with a couple of ladies who worked as school secretaries or as school nurse whose duties included serving as official witness when the strap was given. In one school, in Saskatchewan I think, teachers would take a student to the office for the strap. After discussion with the principal he'd ask, "would you like to strap him, or shall I?" and even in those cases, where both the teacher and principal were present, the school secretary would be asked to come into the office as witness. I am unsure how they decided who would give the strap either who was available that day or perhaps rotated. The decision factor usually started with your teacher sending you to the office and the Principal or VP would decide.
