Well this is my experience with a Foley catheter. I have an overactive bladder, which means I get the alert that I have to pee. Many time I don't make it to the bathroom in time. I have been using Depends early on, I had to change them 2 or 3 times a day. My urologist suggested some medication for it. I tried that. It was terrible I had to drink water like mad and at night I had to get up as many times to pee as I drank water.
He tried another drug, it also provided a tad of relief, but again the side effects, dry mout and a headache and other side effect, all listed on the drug sheet they give you with each medication at the Pharmacy.
I went for my diabetic check-up told my primary care Dr. what was happening, he gave me a months supply of Mybetric. I too them for a week. Again dry mouth, I had a dull headache 24/7. I don't have headaches at all and when I do it is on a rare occasion.
So I had some catheters and I decided one way I could stop from wetting my pants and Depends, was use a catheter. I would also get a mild case of diaper rash from the wet depends.
So I used a catheter and a bed bag and a leg bag. I talked to my urologist's nurse about how long I should wear the catheter, she said they change Foley catheters every 4 weeks. She asked lots of questions and I answered them all. She told my urologist about me and she gave me some helpful information via the phone.
Originally the urologist said there were 3 different ways to treat over active bladder if the drugs didn't work. One was electrical stimulation treatments for 12 to 14 weeks in the office, which I really didn't want to do. Botox injections in the bladder, which I believe does help a lot. I did watch some videos on youtube to get information. I am sure it is not 100% accurate. The other method is to have a device implanted and leads run to your bladder to stop the signals to void. I didn't like that.
I was supposed to go for a consultation about botox injections in April, but living in Michigan we are under a shelter at home order, so my talk with my urologist was via the phone. They scheduled a time for a call. I talked to one very nice lady, then his nurse and she went over all the medications I was taking for my heart, asked about weight, and a host of other stuff. Then the urologist got on the phone. He asked questions, I told him what was happening, that I did have a catheter in me and it was working. I didn't have to worry about peeing my pants, changing my Depends 3 and 4 time a day, no diaper rash. He said he doesn't do botox injections, I would have to see a different urologist. He told me that sometimes the botox works too well and that I may have to catheterize myself to drain my bladder. He said that happens in about 20% of the patients that have botox. I said well that is better than wearing a catheter all the time. He asked if I had a catheter in and I said yes. He told me in an earlier office visit that he was not fond of catheters, I told him what I was doing was my way of stopping wetting my pants for the time being.
So in June I see the other urologist. I have now had a catheter in me since abut the day after Christmas, I did go 7 days without one, which was really hell. 3 pair of pants, 4 boxes of Depends. The first week the catheter was in me, I noticed it was in me most of the time. Then I wouldn't feel it at all. February and March were fine. I didn't notice it at all. I shower with the Foley catheter in me, the nurse said don't take a bath with it in. Also she told me not to masturbate with the Foley in me. I have done that both with the Foley in and out. It is a bit better with the Foley out. I have to empty my leg bag about 5 times a day, maybe 6 on occasion.
I don't notice my Foley catheter at all. I plan to order the Duette type in the future just to see how they work They are smaller than the Foley I have in me now.
I can shower, work in the yard, April is a month from hell up here. One day is Spring like, then we get Winter like weather for a couple days, then something close to spring and then real Spring. We sometimes get Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer like weather in 24 to 36 hours so we have to pay attention to the weather.
So far I have not had any UTI's, the nurse asked about that, I wash myself off good everyday, put a dab of hand sanitizer around the urethra and I am good to go.
I wish they made better straps to hold the leg bags on, but that I can deal with.
So this is my story wearing a Foley catheter from the first of the year till now and when I think about it, I know it is there. I do everything I usually do.
I told my urologist that I like the feel of a catheter in me to give me peace of mind by not wetting my pants. I know that catheters are not the ideal way to go, but I felt desperate. When you are 8 steps from the toilet and feel the urge to go and as you start to walk, pee running down your leg is not the best feeling in the world since you have to clean up the floor when you are done. Running water and doing dishes it a sure sign that you are going to pee your pants. I even went to the toilet before I would do the dishes, again, pee everywhere but the toilet.
So I will see what happens in June. I have enough catheters to change one every week, but so far I have used just 4 catheters since the first of the year. I didn't wear all of the for 4 weeks. The nurse said if I pull on the catheter, gently to make sure it doesn't come out, the balloon inside the bladder is inflated enough.
I am presently wearing a FR-30 with a 30cc balloon which they say I should inflate to 35 cc. I don't even know the catheter is in me most of the time.
I do admit that I enjoy using a catheter.
