I have had IBS (or "Spastic Colon") since I was a youngster. Our doctor recommended a warm tap-water enema to help sooth the bowel. My mother required no further urging to administer enemas if I showed any signs of discomfort in the guts. Her decision was reinforced by conversations with her 'sister witches' in the family coven who agreed that a good cleanout would fix the problem. Not that she ever needed an excuse to give a 'good enema' or two.
The IBS seemed to go away by my late teens, only to reappear in the fourth or fifth year of my marriage. Barium enemas, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy showed no signs of colon damage like with IBD, so it was pronounced I had IBS. The doctor prescribed Donnatol, which made me loopy, so I did not use it. Instead I reverted back to enemas, only with baking soda. That seems to work and it almost always calms the symptoms of bloating, gas, and cramping.
Now, when I feel IBS coming on, my bride gathers up the Rexall Victoria, mixes up a pitcher of baking soda and warm water, and takes care of the problem while I am bent over the tub. Happens 2-4 times a year on average. Whenever we travel, she packs the bag and a box of baking soda so our travel is not disrupted by bad guts!
Oh, and of course, when that irresistible 'ITCH' for an enema sets in, you simply must find a way to 'scratch' that itch! Y'all know just what I mean!
