Seems like modern-day catch phrases are more likely than not simply movie quotes or variations that for one reason or another have become famous like: I'll make you an offer you can't refuse.

Or perhaps a quote by a politician: It's the economy stupid

Though of the my all-time favorites that sends my blood pressure soaring is: everything is going to hell in a handbasket (note the clever alliteration which just adds to the misanthropic pithiness of the phrase so beloved of sour-pussed old fogies) ...
