Girls High School Shower Room

Ok to all the ladies, wondering who would like to share info. When you were in high school in the shower room, what was the norm? Girls shaved completely, part of the way or not at all? And also what was the year , 60 70s 80s and so on? Thanks to all who respond.

I was in band in high school, so I didn't have to shower for PE or a specific sport.

It was not like everybody was just the same. When we were about 15 some of the other girls had started shaving but I did not want to start doing that, I think my pubic hair is nice. Some had all their pubic hair like I did, I still have it too but my bikini line is just done. Some other girls had stripes and shaved the rest of it and others had shaved it all off. Our last year in school was when we were 16 years old in 2003. I think girls at school are shaving sooner and most of them are doing it but it was not really like that when we were at school.

I didn't bother to look. Just get in and get out.

But being it was 30 plus years ago everyone was probably bushy.

In the 60 70s 80s no one shaved, everyone had pubic hair

I attended an all girls grammar school in the UK from 1970 to 1976. I have no recollection of anyone shaving and we all had a bush. In those days we all wore regulation gym knickers and, if necessary, it was appropriate to trim to ensure no straggly hairs popped out from under knickers. The same for swimming costumes.

Other than that we were natural.

While I never really paid attention, it was a time when all the girls had bushes as that was the trend of the day. It was my senior year when there was a girl on our soccer team who was shaved, and yes we gossiped about her, and to be honest, wondered what was the purpose and how it must have felt.

My high school in Los Angeles didnt require us to shower, thankfully! I was so awkward and shy I would have died of humiliation! It was hard enough to just change from school clothes to gym clothes! My friend and I just changed as fast as we could and get out of the locker room. When we had swimming, we changed in the bathroom stalls.

I'm way older than you (but age is just a number, right?), but too bad I didn't know you in high school or college. I'm extremely turned on by healthy women in athletic clothing, especially sneakers. I would have tried dating you for sure. It later turned out that my major sports were bicycling and SCUBA diving, but you can wear sneakers for those, too. But I'm sure you found someone who appreciated your athleticism. I enjoy reading your posts frequently.

It would be really interesting (seriously) to hear what it really WAS like in girls' shower rooms - especially during the 1950s / 60s / 70s ' in the UK / USA (and elsewhere). There are lots of accounts (and I would say pretty aćcurate) of what it was like for the boys.

I am sure my grammar school (where I attended 1963 - 1970) was pretty typical. You had no option but be totally naked to take showers (twice per week...after PE and Games..some terms there was swimming as well). The PE Master (Coach) always checked up on us. If anyone ever dared to try dodging the showers, they risked being slippered (whacked with a gym shoe / trainer) on the bare buttocks, forced to take the shower anyway and then put into detention. He would also whack anyone who he thought was messing about...whether or not they were dressed / half - dressed or still naked.

This was strictly enforced. Always. Any thoughts about modesty...forget it!! It was simply not countenanced. Of course, there was the usual range of boys...shy boys, nervy boys, boys who seemed not to mind, extrovert boys, uninhibited / exhibitionist boys, 'rude' boys etc. But you had to get naked whatever your personality. Many hated it, of course.

I have a friend on another site who was talking to his wife about girls PE in the 1970s (UK). She told him that the girls (especially in their teens) were paranoid about enforced nudity and many found it extremely / incredibly upsetting / distressing.There was a LOT of resistance and they accused their PE mistress of Lesbianism!!!

So...I am not, myself, especially bothered about whether or not girls shaved their pubic hair....but WHAT was the atmosphere REALLY like in the girls' changing / shower rooms??

I always thought it was strange that the girls changing rooms (we had to change there occasionally) had cubicles while the boys ones were open with benches . Used to fantasise about the girls taking group showers!

Well the atmosphere was a bit quiet and shy I think in our shower room after we had played sports, for about 3 years a lot of us crossed our arms across our boobs and put our hands in front of our crotches to go in and out of where the showers were in a tunnel at the end of the changing room, it did not work so well though. When we got a bit older I think we were a lot more used to it and we stopped trying to cover up so much. We all had boobs and having pubic hair was not a shock to anybody so it did not matter if we got seen really. It was until 2003 but my mum said she went through the same stuff at school when it was in the 1970s and 80s, it was the same sort of thing but nobody at all shaved and they showered after every time they played sports.

I was in high school from ‘89-‘93. We were never required to shower and my gym class was the last period of the day, so I never did at school.

Any time I changed out, I did behind a curtain. I was very careful not to uncover much, even then, and I never looked at any of the other girls to notice.

At home when the kids are not around, I may be clothing optional to a degree, but I pretty much save he dressing/undressing to the bathroom and bedroom still.

I am not sure what I would do now in a gym shower room.

If you were in the band, did that count as PE? You didn't have to take any PE courses? I graduated from HS in CT (US) In 1970 and even for band members, PE was a required course every year with required showers. I'd have been very happy to not have to take PE which was mostly jocks acting out for the coaches and the rest of us learning nothing about actual physical care of our bodies and exercise.

I was in high school in the mid-late 1980s. I did gymnastics at private gyms since I was in kindergarten. Many young girls in my area took dance, ballet or gymnastics. I was on the gymnastics team in school since middle school and I still keep up with all the stretching exercises. We never took showers at the private gyms after practice as a child, but in high school showering was optional after gym or team practice. I showered about half the time after practice and that was mostly in warm weather because in gymnastics you work hard in relatively short bursts with cooling off time in between because equipment--ropes, bars, horses, rings and floor all had to be shared among the teammates. In the showers, no one was shaved, but just about all of us were trimmed because hair hanging out of bikinis is gross, and a few (the floozies 😁 ) had landing strips. I recall only a few bushes being wild. I wasn't a jock by any means and getting a date was never a problem because as Jerry Seinfeld said, every man loves a gymnast. 😁 😁 😁

Regarding band and PE, band was NOT considered PE when I was in high school or when my daughters were in high school, although it was a good opportunity to attend evening practices and have physical education under the bleachers before we drove home!

I was a flutist in the band and marching band and we didn't get any allowance for that in PE.

We had two hours of rehearsal every day after school unless there was a football game at night. Then we had a shortened rehearsal. No, it wasn't as strenuous as most sports, but we were moving nearly the entire two hours, and the Houston area has summer temperatures all the way until November. We didn't have to take PE during concert season because we had room in our schedules for only two electives, and band took one of them (four core classes until you met the requirements, and then you might get an extra elective). Some band members did play a sport, but not too many did because of the time commitment for band, even during concert season.

I was also in marching band for two years in college, and that counted for two of the four semesters of PE for me. In middle school we took band and PE since we marched only in one parade during the year.

My niece was in the auxiliary corps for band. She graduated three years ago and did not have to take PE.

Thank heaven. Probably not good for musical instruments. Other ways work better. I'm a former HS, College & Grad school bassoonist.

But in HS for your 2 hours rehearsal after school every day, you didn't have to change into PE clothes did you, just because it counted as PE? Just wore whatever was comfortable, maybe in sneakers for comfort?

Thanks. Much better than uniforms. What instrument(s) did you play? I started on alto, tenor and later baritone saxophone from 6th grade, then moved to bassoon in 8th grade. I played through HS, College and many years after that. Truly a passion for a very long time. I hope you had a great deal of satisfaction and fun playing in Band and anywhere else you played.

When I was in the high school band, the conductor used to say that the only way to have two bassoonists play in perfect tune is to kill one of them.

Was it the double reeds or something else about the instrument?

In marching band a friend and I used to trade our flute and clarinet with each other. The conductor was hard pressed to do anything about it because we switched seamlessly and once we were marching he couldn't stop the whole band for us. 😁

Hmmmmm, interesting. Haven't heard that line before, but something like it was heard occasionally about high ranges in the oboes and clarinets. I guess I got lucky or I was pretty well in tune most often. Just having a double reed shouldn't predispose you to play out of tune unless your reed that day was too old or not adjusted well. Not sure.

I forgot to add oboes to bassoons in my earlier post. He said it about both.

Yes, I got pretty good at the clarinet and my friend was pretty good with the flute. I picked up the clarinet pretty easily. It was similar to playing the flute with regard to the keys and it was MUCH easier to blow than a flute or piccolo.
