Spanking from a parent is about punishment. To the child when they know a spanking is coming, they subconsciously believe that pants on provides protection.

I've come to believe that spanking is a very effective form of punishment -- for the giver, that is, who gets to work out frustrations, anger, and maybe some sadistic impulses into the bargain. I have always thought the element was authority. You need authority over the miscreant to pull down or remove his shorts and pants and choose who sees the punishment and their nakedness. I agree. It demonstrates dominance on the part of the spanker, and the submission of the subject indicates the tacit acceptance of that dominance. Post puberty I think there is inevitable sexual friction on some level or other.

I think spanking is an exercise in humiliation and pain. Both serve as deterrents. Complete exposure of the buttocks helps with each. Humiliation of the child and dominance and authority is established by exposure of the child’s genitals and buttocks. I can only speak for myself about bare bottomed spankings. Believe me, they straightened me out! My mother was from Austria and was spanked that way. So mas my Irish (born here) dad. My initial reaction to this question, is that is just it was done in our household growing up. But if you look beyond the intent of the a spanking, it was in our household for poor attitude, direct disobedience, disrespect, etc. The action on having one pants taken down or being told to take them down in humiliation for the spankee. In some cases it is exciting but for me it was shame. Also, from a pain perspective, “Getting to the Bottom of the Problem” - it definitely hurts more to get it bare rather than with some clothing protection. Depending on the offense, just a few good whacks on the bare bottom will get the spankee attention and beyond that is where you get the attention of the spankee, remorse, realization that they are being held accountable for their actions.

I agree with all of that. But the "lack of control" part is what I think a lot of people forget or ignore. And that applies to parents spanking their own child or to some other authority figure dishing out punishment.

Stripping someone (for whatever purpose) seems like a great way to exert more control over them. After all, if you're stripped, you're not as likely to run away to try to escape your punishment or whatever situation you find yourself in. You're also likely to be more compliant with any instructions or orders that you're given. On the other hand, if you're still wearing some clothing (even if it's only underwear), you might feel that you have an escape route if you really need it, or that you can resist in some way.

And I think that carries over to other situations besides just spankings and punishment. Why did my high school P.E. teacher not only paddle boys that misbehaved in class, but often stripped them to their jockstraps first? Perhaps there were multiple (somewhat obvious) reasons, but I think one of them was just to maintain better control over them. What about group physicals? In high school we had group sports physicals where we had to immediately strip down to a jockstrap and then have the entire exam done that way. Why? I suspect one reason was to maintain order and exert better control over a large group of boys.

I guess that from my parents point of view (regard me and my brothers when we where young), must be pointed some good reasons:

1. Any cloths covering the skin are like some kind of shield who prevent the stinging to be delivered in the best wey for a good corection;

2. Pants / underpants also save the skin from spanking marks. A red or a welted bottom help the spankee to think about his behavior every time when he look over his shoulders or he take a seat. When a kid is put in the corner with a red bare bottom on display, he is also a good example for his siblings who had a good opportunity to reflect on their own behavior when they sow the consequences...

3. The spanker know when is the time to stop the punishment just looking on the "results". The spankee will receive just what he deserve and nothing more to be really hurt.

In my opinion, many parents find at least really cute the moments before and after the spanking - when the kid is ashamed or embarrassed by his nakedness. Some parents must find this also educative and treat this as additional punishment who will make the spanking a memorable punishment.

We have never spanked our children as today it is considered abuse and leads to them abusing their children when they become parents. So we have broken a long held tradition of "spare the rod and spoil the child". I agree with JimmyJohnson about the control part plus it was just how spankings were done when I was going up. A boy in his underwear, jockstrap or nude isn't going anywhere. And with my brothers and I, getting sent to our room to undress to our underpants and wait for Dad to come home and spank us was part of the punishment. And I agree that bare spankings allowed parents, coaches or whoever to tell when to stop since they could see how they were doing.

I don't completely agree that being stripped down to just our underpants for our group sports physicals was all about control but control was part of it. Lots of reasons as are set out in many good responses to this question. I'd put in first spot, tradition. Spanking practices in homes, schools, even other situations, follow similar patterns which vary in different places around the world. From all of your accounts and postings, it would seem that the stinging aspect was incidental to the rest, just an excuse to get you naked. Everything about the accounts you've posted just screams sexual gratification or spanking fetishist or whatever. They are all much more sex scenarios than a method of helping someone distinguish between acceptable and non-acceptable behavior while growing up.

It seems to me all that it accomplishes is perpetuating sexual spanking fetishism in yet another generation.
