DIY Stirrups Mount

Hello all!

I recently acquired a set of old stirrups and I'm having trouble finding the parts I need to macgyver these onto my bed ?

Those are the stirrups, simply the stirrup foot on a metal pole. Ideally, I'd like something that can clamp to the board at the foot of my bed, and has a spot for the pole to either fit into or slide through (which would require some sort of tension to hold the pole at the desired height). This way, I can remove the stirrups and the mounting after the exam, leaving the bed to appear normal.

If I can't do that, I'd probably settle for mounting some sort of bracket to a 2x4 and then slide that under the mattress during an exam.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction for what parts I might need or at least what to call this sort of bracket? The stirrup pole is just over half an inch in diameter (0.6in to be precise) if that's useful.

I dont know how much you care about looks, because that makes a big difference. Nice shiny stainless is perfect, but it wont be easy to acquire nor work with. You need something that suspends these out from the bed, as if her feet are on the edge, then her ‘good parts’ are too far away! I had envisioned a frame of 1/2” black pipe, that extended under the mattress, so that her weight lying down would keep it steady. To raise and lower these foot rests, they need to slide into another pipe with a thumb screw for an adjustment. Or, drill various height holes through this sleeve pipe and use a pin which would hold up the stirrup pole.

Bring the pole (maybe take off foot part so you wont get funny looks!) to Home Depot and see what kind of pipe they have. 1/2” MIP might work and there is also electrical conduit, and even PVC, although in this size it might have too much flex.

You make an excellent point, and after a play session last week, I thought of another bit of DIY that would go well with this. I'd love to have a simple catch basin, like many exam tables have underneath them. So, if I got a bit of plywood, I could cut a hole in the center and drop in a stainless steel tray, and then I could mount arms off the side of that plywood for my stirrups.

Still have a lot to figure out in the way of materials and how I'd get this done, but I'm sure I can figure something out. I don't have access to a lot of tools or space to use power tools without getting some questions about what I'm building, so I'll have to be creative I guess.

On that note, if anyone reading this is in the NJ/NY/PA area and is DIY-savvy and kink-friendly, I would gladly pay in beer, food, money, or all of the above for assistance and access to space and tools!

If you don't mind the "spread" of the stirrups being fixed, the easiest thing would be to use a couple small (1/4") lag bolts to go up through your plywood and hold up a riser made out of 4x4 with a hole drilled in the center to match the diameter of the rods coming out of the stirrups. The 4x4 will have a lot of moment on it, so you may need to brace that front and back and side to side with some angles.

The risers can be cleaned up, the edges can be knocked off with chisel or belt sander and they can be given a more contoured look, or they could be wrapped with foam and covered with leather or vinyl.

Also, you can tap threads into wood. You could tap a hole perpendicular to the stirrups rods and put a bolt in that to allow you to change the height of the stirrups. If you have access to to a 3D printer there are a lot of knob designs that will fit a standard hardware sized hex head or nut on thingaverse.

There's one easy way to affix the stirrups & that is to get hold of the mounting assy for wall speakers & wall mounted TV's as they concertina & can be locked in place . .The speaker types have a number of solid base plates for either fixing flat to wall or up to a post for outdoors entertainment

Might need to do some small modification however you've got the necessary start item

There's also one unit that I cannot recall presently that has the right diameter metal tube fixed (welded) in the vertical position at the end of the boom

Another good place to check out is Officeworks and /or large office suppliers, as many such products come in flatpacks

I have the exact same set. All that's required is two 1x4's about 4' long to slide under the mattress. Add a piece of 2x4 at the end to make it thicker. Drill the proper size hole.
