That won't necessarily fix the problem because your new credit card number is associated with the same old account in the bank so they can still make charges on it if they want to.

You have to close the account and get a new one. Then, if the company making the charges disputes you and they can show you have some sort of contract with them, you could still be on the hook for the charges. They could sue you if they wanted to.
