A few weeks back, randomly I met a friends friend who was a doctor. He was a surgeon, but we got to talking and he mentioned a friend of his who was an internist. He said, "he's a great guy, totally gets it, young and if your looking for a new doctor - I would totally suggest him". I have a doctor that I currently love, but thought why not check out a new doctor.

He mentioned that he is not accepting new patients, but he could email him and get me an appointment.

A few days later I received an email from the new doctor saying he would take me on as a patient, and to call the office and schedule.

I called, and after some back and forth with the receptionist telling me he is not accepting new patients - I made an appointment for a physical.

He is part of a large modern practice. Most everything with the practice is automated and online, including scheduling, communicating, health history etc.

I arrived a few minutes before the schedule time to find a huge office with multiple doctor. The waiting area was very large with 2 receptionists.

I had completed all the forms online, so I checked in and had a seat.

As I was waiting I noticed the office seemed very busy. Lots of patients being called back, and coming out quickly. I did notice there did not seem to be nurses, the doctors themselves were coming out and calling the patients.

I had of course seen a photo of the doctor I was scheduled to see online. As the doctors were calling back other patients, I noticed the doctor I was scheduled to see was no where to be found.

At the exact time I was scheduled for the appointment, the doctor came out and called my name.

We exchanged greetings and he took me back through a maze of doors (to exam rooms) to his room. We went in and there was a desk, with an old style exam table in the middle of the room. The office was located in a high rise, and there were floor to ceiling windows that looked out on a park across the way. No other buildings were level with the room, so they could not see in.

Between the desk and the exam table there was a hospital curtain attached to the ceiling, but it was left open.

The doctor asked me to sit down at the desk.

He said, "So you are here for a full physical today?". I said yes, and he replied "I love that. Its great when a guy your age takes care of himself".

Since I had completed the medical history on line, he glanced through it and we talked for about 10 minutes.

He asked the normal questions about my history as we spoke.

He then said, "Ok lets exam you". He got up and opened a closet and pulled out a sheet that he laid across the exam table. There was no paper covering on the exam table. As he put the sheet on the table, he said "ok, shoes and sock, shirt and pants off - you can leave on your underwear".

He stood there as I underdressed.

I put my clothes on the chair I had just been sitting in.

Once undressed, he said - "have a seat up here" - motioning to the exam table.

I was wearing grey jockey briefs.

He started with my head - eyes, ears, nose and a good "Ahhhhhhh" in my mouth.

As he was doing the exam he was talking about moving to this current city, where he grew up, med school etc. He was very friendly and chatty. Something that always calms me down a bit more then a direct silent doctor.

He then palpated my neck.

He then did my blood pressure which he noted was a bit high. He said "We will take it at the end of the exam, sometimes it gets high cause because of the situation of undressing in front of me".

He then listened to my heart. He then said "take a few deep breaths".

He then said "lay back", and pulled out the feet extender.

Once I was laying back in nothing but my jockey briefs, he started to listen to my chest again with the stethoscope.

I will admit, usually with new doctors I always get hard from the moment I arrive at the office.

This doctor was having so much casual conversation, that the feel of excitement was coming and going. The moment I laid back, I felt a twinge and a bit of a fullness in my briefs.

After using the stethoscope on my chest as I laid there, he then pushed around using his hands. He pushed on my tummy, under my lungs and then down the sides of my lower chest. He then slide his hands under the top of my briefs and pushed on my groin.

He then asked me to stand and he went to the cabinet to get rubber gloves. He said, "I'm going to check your testicles, stand in front of me and lower your briefs to here" (motioning to my thigh just above my knee).

He was seated on the stool.

I lowered my briefs, and as I was not erect I was a tad plump, but not to the level of a semi.

He took each testicle and rolled it very carefully in each hand.

He rolled them very slowly, and he was not quick with them at all. He then palpated up and down the shaft of my penis. At this point, I was starting to grow to a full on semi.

He then said "you can pull up your underwear".

I did and he asked me if I noticed any freckles on my skin that had changed in size. I said that I did not, but as I stood there in underwear he ran his hands from my head to my feet looking at moles and freckles. He asked me to turn around and did the same on the backside. As he got to my butt area, he pulled my underwear down and then back up himself.

He said, "nothing seems to worry me with your skin".

He then asked me to step on the scale in the room and did my weight.

He returned to his desk to type, and said I could get dressed. I did in front of him as he typed.

I sat back down fully dressed, and he said "colon and prostate cancer we start checking for at 55". I thought this seemed a bit late, and I will admit - every doctor I have seen since I was 26 has done a rectal / prostate exam on me. But, I was not going to push the issue.

He did say he wanted to check for STDs and in addition to a blood test he would like to swab my throat and rectum. He talked about some vaccines I needed.

He then left the room to get the vaccines.

He returned and said, "now that you are dressed, I need you to remove your shirt again and sit on the exam table".

So I did and he did one vaccine in one arm and the other in the other arm.

He then said, "Lets get the STD screen out of the way.". He did my throat first asking me to say "Ahhh", as he swabbed the back of my neck.

He then said "the next swab is of the rectum, I will swipe each side with this" At this point he showed me the swab stick.

He said "You can just stand facing the window and drop your pants and underwear". I did and he swabbed up into my rectum. It always feels odd as there is no lube on the stick.

He then said, "ok you can get dressed".

He finished putting away the swabs and I sat back down. He sat at his desk, and we chatted for a few minutes. He told me the features of the practice, and how best to get in touch with him, etc..

He told me the results of the exam would be emailed to me in a few weeks.

The last thing he said was "It is great to meet you. On the way out they will have you drop a urine sample in the bathroom. I look forward to seeing you soon".

For sure not the most thorough exam I ever had, but the doctor was nice and it was interesting to have a new experience at a new practice.
