Caleb Gets A Job, But The Company Has A New STRICT Policy!
I am Caleb, a 23 year old male, who recently graduated from a nice local college with a business degree. All through my school years and including college I played sports. I participated in soccer and swimming in high school. I had coaches with high expectations who expected us to stay and maintain great physical condition. When I went off to college I had a coaches who were even more tough! I have managed to stay in great physical shape.
I recently started applying for business related jobs and after a few weeks I started to get some offers. One of the offers came from a medium sized company that advertised that they had great pay and benefits. The job was for their business admin department, maintaining account payables to vendors. I thought this would be a great fit for me. After a few weeks I started to get offers.
At the interview I was introduced to Mr. Jackson, the HR director, and Jason the supervisor of the unit I could possibly be working for. The office was a nice and modern facility with nice décor and especially nice office furniture. The front lobby had multiple large screen TV’s with the company logo and video of the industry that it was involved in. The place was very nice.
I was led down a long hallway into a conference room where I met both of the gentlemen who would be interviewing me. I wore some nice dress pants and a nice dress shirt and tie, and a blazer. Before leaving the house I looked in the mirror and really felt confident in how I looked!
I am a 5’ 10” guy, at 190 pounds with great biceps, legs, abs, and a nice chest. In these dress pants my ass even looked better! I was cleanly shaved and wore a touch of some nice sporty cologne. I wanted this good job and wanted to make some great money!
Once in the conference room I met Mr. Jackson, who I spoke on the phone with and the other gent Jason, who was in charge of the business relations department. The conference room was even SUPER nice!! These guys were close in age, good looking and dressed in suits and nice ties. They both appeared to be close to 40’ish.
They asked me a series of questions and did the typical explanation of what they were looking for spill. Mr. Jackson started asking me about college and if I played any type of sports, since my college was known for a great athletic department. I told them about the sports I had played and the championships my teams had accomplished. They seemed very interested and it felt to me like the mood of the room had started to change when I started telling them about my athletic experiences.
Jason the supervisor asked me, “do you maintain fitness routines still?”
“Yes I do. I workout quite regularly,” I replied.
“Thats good and very important,” said Mr. Jackson.
Next Jason broke the ice and said, “I think you would be a great fit for this position. I would like to go ahead and offer you the job. I think you have great references and would do really great here.”
“Thank You. I would love to join you guys here,” I responded!
“This position does have a starting pay of $28/per hour. We do offer great benefits,” stated Mr. Jackson.
“Wow! I would be happy to accept this job,” I responded quickly.
“Caleb- the job is yours then, but before we can allow you to start for our company, we do have a prerequisite that we must clear first,” said Mr. Jackson, with a little bit of concern.
“Sure… I understand,” I managed to say.
Mr. Jackson and Supervisor Jason looked at each other for a brief moment….
“Caleb, our company just started a new employee wellness program as directed by our company CEO and board of directors. This means that you will be required to complete a Pre-employment physical exam…” Said Mr. Jackson.
“I wouldnt have a problem with that at all sir,” I said.
“I MUST explain that your the first employee to be hired since our new mandate went into effect young man. As part of this new direction from our company leadership, all new employees MUST also partake in our new company wellness program. One of the requirements is you must visit our company gym 2 times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes, each session,” stated Mr. Jackson.
“I wouldn’t have an issue with that,” I responded.
“Now Caleb, we must explain. As part of this program you would also be required to attend an additional personal training session once every two weeks as well. You will also be required to give your submission to a physical exam every 6 months with our in-house doctor. I know the requirements may be a bit tough, but the leaders have brought these wellness requirements to help lower cost and offer better benefits,” stated Mr. Jackson.
“That would be fine I think. I am in great health I believe and still workout regularly,” I responded.
“Ok great. I know it sounds like a strict program. But the best part is, our company is offering all the participants a quarterly bonus for meeting the health and fitness goals that our personal trainer and medical director set with you. We have had many people who do NOT want to take positions with our company with these new rules now in effect. I know it may seem invasive… But our new leaders are really health conscious and believe in doing better with employee health,” said Jason.
“I totally understand and dont have a problem with that,” I responded!
“Very good. I am sure you won’t have any problems, since your in great shape.” said, Mr. Jackson
“Yeah, you might as well continue with great healthy habits since your this young and in great shape,” stated Jason.
“Well give us just a few minutes. We will make an appointment for you Pre-employment physical exam, and get you the necessary health history paperwork that the medical team will want you to complete. We will be right back,” Said Mr. Jackson
Mr. Jackson got up and walked out of the room and Jason my new boss, followed him.
I waited and was happy to of been offered a job at such a great pay. I wasn’t really concerned about this health policy and such. I knew I was in great health and enjoyed working out at the gym, so why not be get a bonus for doing so.
After about 5 minutes Mr. Jackson and Jason came back to the conference room. Mr. Jackson had a folder with him. They both walked back in the room and sat back down.
“Ok. Caleb. We have a physical exam scheduled for you Tomorrow morning at 7:30am. Will that work for you,” asked Mr. Jackson.
“Yes. That would be fine by me,” I responded.
“Great. I am going to give you this folder of papers to fill out,” said Mr. Jackson. He sat the folder in front of me and opened the folder. I was kind of surprised at the amount of papers in this folder.
“The first page here are some instructions for you. Your exam will take place here in this building tomorrow morning. You will need to be here at 7:30am. You can check in at the front desk where you did today. You're welcome to wear comfortable clothing. Don’t feel like you have to be dressed up like you are today. The next page here has some further instructions. Our Doctor will want to do a full lab work up on you, including a fasting lab. So no food after 10pm. Dont eat any breakfast in the morning. Dont drink anything except water. We would like you to get a full nights rest. We suggest having a 10pm bedtime so that you're well rested for Dr.,” stated Mr. Jackson.
“Ok…,” I managed to say. I continued to look at the papers Mr. Jackson was presenting me with.
“Dr. does want you to be well showered for your exam. You will need to complete the health history forms here in the folder. Its important for you to give as much information that you can with your complete honesty and truthfulness,” Mr. Jackson said.
“I can do that,” I managed to mutter.
“Very well. Well… thats all we have for you for now. We will see you tomorrow Caleb. Congrats on joining our team,” said Mr. Jackson as he stood up from the chair.
“Thank you guys for welcoming me,” I stated.
I stood up as the two figures stood up and gathered the folder with all of the papers. Mr. Jackson walked around the table and shook my hand. Jason followed as well.
“Thanks for joining our team. I believe you will be a great fit and do exceptional work for my department,” stated Jason.
“Thank you. I cant wait” I responded.
I was ushered to the front desk and we all 3 said our goodbyes and I left the office complex. I was excited to have a job for sure!
I got to my car and opened the folder of papers. I started glancing thru the papers and all of the health history forms. There was also a consent form, a health and wellness survey and an explanation of this firm's new health and wellness policy. Sure enough. This was a brand new policy for the company. The policy seemed quite strict to me. But, I also knew I wanted this higher paying job! After looking through all the papers, I closed the folder and decided I should get home and get these forms completed.
