Solutions to the Problem(s) is Education & Responsibility
I have been doing some thinking lately about current events, people with disabilities other than physical, and doing my own analysis. What am I talking about? People are up in arms about the tragedies like Sandy Hook and other shootings, people with mental illness, people with learning disabilities, how the media reports and our politicians. From all this I see patterns emerging and you can blame it on my dyslexic/ADD brain and blame my training as an engineer. People are understandably upset by events and want it somehow fixed so it doesn't happen again. As my girlfriend/slave has pointed out to me more than once. People want a quick fix, a pill, and politicians of course have to respond to the outcry and talk about new laws or stricter laws. In the long run, nothing is really accomplished because the root of the problem is never looked at. Over time society as a whole wants someone else to fix the problem(s) that plague us or perceived. In my lifetime I have known many interesting people who took the time to explain, educate, and challenge me in thinking. There is alot of stuff crammed in the gray storage cells of my brain from my travel through life. So you are probably wondering where I am going with all this. Well here it goes...
What I see is 2 main areas where people in general are failing, responsibility and education. People today don't take responsibility for there actions or in-actions, and consequences thereof. People see problem(s) but take no action because they don't want to get involved, it takes too much of there time and they see no return on the time and energy. The other is education, and I am not talking about regular school subjects here. People see mental health, learning disabilities, as negative, people not normal in there eyes or different. People need to be educated on these various things with facts, the pluses, and this has been around for thousands of years. Some of it was crucial to the survival of man. So those genetic traits didn't get bred out of us as we progressed as a society. These so called can be helped and become not a burden but the opposite, productive individuals making positive contributions.
Being in my 60's now and raised by parents one who would be in her early 90's and having buried this past year a father who would be in his early100's. My father grew up in Raleigh, NC during the depression and a mother who at 13 knew more about war than a child should, losing a home, forced labor camp, escaping and almost died, and building a life from very little. They knew what responsibility was, hard work, no hand outs, and they didn't look down on people with problems. Anyway this is what has been going through my brain....

I have long said The best thing ever invented was the internet. The worst thing ever invented was the internet.
The internet allow good people to come together, become creative and exchange wonderful ideal. The internet also allowed the evil to surface to become the society we now live in today and thus the world is far more dangerous as a result.
Another is that a great many people have now become “It is all about me.”
Another I cannot address because of the rules put forth by this forum, it would best be addressed over cold beer while sitting in some dive bar in Savannah GA. Perhaps someday.

Can’t disagree. I taught for 37 years, education is key along with responsibility, but most teachers also teach responsibility. Right now the ignorance in our country is astounding. Perhaps it’s always existed as it does now, but we didn’t have the means to express ignorance like we do now. Social media- everyone has the ability to share thoughts so the ignorance is more widely viewed and spread. So many are living the lies of ignorance. Not stupid, just ignorant of facts and reality sometimes seeming to relish in their own ignorance.
