My Happy Place
The garden is my happy place…usually. But the other day I was planting and watering and I just could not forget how my orchard and garden looked after the derecho. Trees blown over and torn apart, laying all over the ground. My tomatoes that had been staked upright with 6 foot “T” posts laying flattened on the ground. A 24 year old grape vine blown over on itself.
Such a mess.
So much work to get things somewhat back to normal.
But the mess was cleaned up. I got the tomatoes restaked upright.
So when I pounded the “T” posts in this year it was a release to pound them harder to to stake them up for this season. With each strike of the post pounder a little bit of that memory was smashed.
Then I can relax and enjoy watching my garden grow, produce, and then enjoy the harvest that I hope comes.
I will find my peace in the garden again. Those memories will still come through. Just less and less often each year. I know this. I feel this. It was just the day for me to remember I made it through that awful time. I can make it through whatever comes next.

The trials and tribulations of a gardener! Sorry you had that bad experience but glad you recovered and are enjoying your garden and delightful harvests. Fresh veggies from the garden are a great memory for me. My father always grew a big garden. Unfortunately I did not inherit his green thumb and where I live it’s a constant battle with ground squirrels.

Like you I am at my happiest when I am working in my garden or flowers. I have a rather large garden with tomatoes, beans, peppers, cucumbers and cabbage. Also planted is some extremely hot peppers such as the Carolina Reaper, Trinidad Scorpion and Ghost Peppers, these a friend sells for me at farmers market. A great deal of it we give to our neighbors, however I do can the beans and make some salsa from the tomatoes.
We also have iriises, peonies and about 270 daylily plants. The best days of summer are here

I also keep a small garden. The joy of picking your own vegetables is wonderful. I hope your garden does well and you find that happy place every day.
