Over 5 years ago I came home one cold wet fall day and saw this cat trying to stay dry under a small tree we have In the front yard so I took him in, dried him off, gave him food and water, made him a bed in the garage and next day went out to find his owner. As it turned out his owner had taken in a man with 2 pit bulls so she threw her 3 cats out, well buddy we are now your home. We had an 14 yr old female cat which he took to with instant liking and really got along well with her. They were both indoor-outdoor cats and loved to explore the backyard, sun, do catnap and watch the ducks.
She passed on 3 years ago and I found it rather sad that once a week he would go hunting for her in the house going to every room looking for her. And at Christmas he would lay under the tree almost expecting her to come and join him. He had been having some health problems lately but I guess that is to be expected when you are a 23 year old cat.
Last night he was on my lap as usual, when I went to bed he followed me into the kitchen to be fed then he was off to his bed in the family room. This morning I got up and he was not in the kitchen to be fed, he was still in his bed. I knelt down, picked up his paw and he moved slightly, got some coffee, came back in, sat a while then picked his paw again and it was cold.
He is now buried out back with his sister, he too will have a marker and flowers will grow on his grave. We will get another pet as I am sure that one who needs a home with somehow find us. As I told my husband, they bring one so much joy and happiness, they last day they break your heart.
