I saw this on another website. I did not write it but it resonates so truly I had to share it.
Don‘t read something here and think “Oh why can’t my spouse/partner be like…” etc. This is a persona as are all the profiles here and anywhere. I love the term ‘curated’. Manicured. Pruned. Spruced. This is my house cleaned for company.
Again this isn’t my work but shared from another site.
Looking at my page, my photos and words and advice columns and podcasts?
I just want to remind you that all of it is edited.
I just want to remind you that one photo takes hours and hours of prep and design and hundreds of photos are taken and thrown away.
I just want to remind you that every photo and video is simply a captured sliver of time, a slice of moment that stands alone and has no bearing on the daily flow of life.
I just want to remind you that I'm writing this sweating in mismatched pajama shorts, no makeup and I haven't brushed my teeth yet today.
I just wanted to remind you not to compare your life to the curated and edited experience that is social media. Social media isn't real. Hardly even a little bit. We lay out our diaries and our experiences for others to view and sample but they are edited experiences.
I can look at my profile and objectively say that the person behind the profile looks like they know how to have some fun...
People are often surprised at how introverted, antisocial and awkward I can be in groups. People are often surprised that I'm not the life of the party, closing out gangbangs at 5 am, having drained the last drop of spunk of out of the last anonymous swinging scrotum.
I am not responsible for the cartoon version of me that people have created and allowed to live rent-free in their heads.
My point is, I'm writing this in my pajamas and my teeth are so fuzzy it's actually distracting me. I'm going to stop writing and go brush my teeth. Don't believe everything you see on the internet.
