For the last 4 weeks I have been tending bar in this mom and pop sports bar and I cannot tell you how much I have looked forward to doing so and have enjoyed it. Though it was just one day a week on Thursday, I got to know the regulars, what they drank and feel they accepted me into their bit of society. I quickly came to know the routine, the early birds waiting for the doors to open, a hit or miss lunch crowd and my favorite little couple.
In their mid 80’s, she in her little blue suit with a string of pearls, he in his sport jacket with a plaid shirt and his tweety little British driving hat, they always sit at window table. Their order was always the same, 2 martinis with a spear of olives across the top of the glass, split a Reuben with extra Cape Cod chips. He told me I made the best martini he ever had. Thank you sir.
The owner would come in every day about 2 to go over the books, but he always took the time to talk to me. Told me how he had some good compliments on me, made me feel go. He would often talk about the problems with the business, though he had deep pockets, it was coming to an end. For 3 months he has been shut down, then was allowed 50% business but had to turn the taps off at 11 at night. I have run books in a bar before, I know the overhead and he has to be losing more money than I can imagine.
Today they shut us down again starting tomorrow at 5, open maybe in 3 weeks. I worked today, was a normal day but somehow there was a doom. My regulars were there, we said goodbye see you whenever. My little couple came in, told them see you next month.
I wonder if I ever will.
