I had my yearly physical this morning. I intentionally booked my appointment for the earliest morning slot (8am) to hopefully avoid the marathon waiting sessions I went through the previous couple of years. My plan worked perfectly as I was in and out in just 35 minutes including blood work.
I arrived at 7:55am in case there was any paper work to fill out, and promptly at 8am I was called back by the nurse. She had me take off my shoes and empty my pockets before weighing me and getting my height in the hallway. Next, she led me to the exam room, where took my heart rate, temperature, and blood pressure.
She then confirmed my allergies and what I was in for and then handed me a gown. She told me my doctor likes to have his patients use a gown and she instructed me to remove everything except underwear and have the gown open to the back.
Unlike in previous years, the room was actually not cold and less than 3 minutes after the nurse leaving me to change, the doctor came in. He made small talk for a minute while pulling up my chart and then reviewed my history and asked about any changes in health or concerns I had.
After the history, he began with the HEENT portion of the physical exam, looking in my ears, eyes, noes, and mouth before palpating my neck and jaw. He then lowered my gown into my lap and listened to my back and heart. He then asked me to lie down as he pulled out the foot rest.
After listening to my chest and abdomen while supine, he palpated my abdomen starting high and working towards my inguinal lymph nodes. He didn’t reach under my underwear but, as in past years, he thoroughly felt my lower abdomen and groin.
He then had me sit up, extend one leg at a time, and resist his pushes downward. He did a similar test with my arms having me resist his inward and outward pushes. He then stood up and began donning a pair of exam gloves.
My doctor asked me to stand while he made brief small talk as he put on his gloves and got into position on his stool. Since my gown was nearly off, I set it aside and stood in just my underwear. When his gloves were on and he was seated, he asked me to lower my underwear.
He started the genital exam by palpating the left testis, then the right, working efficiently but thoroughly. He then performed a hernia exam having me turn my head and cough twice. Unlike the previous couple years, he didn’t examine my penis. He then told me I could pull up my underwear and get dressed.
I dressed with the doctor still in the room as he finished making notes on the computer. He shook my hand, told me he’d see me in a year, and we both exited the exam room together.
I then checked out and made my way to the lab for blood work. I always have blood drawn from my left arm but inexplicably the vein was nonexistent. The vein on my right was exceptionally prominent so that’s where the sample was taken from. I noted the time as I walked out: 8:30 - 35 minutes from arriving to leaving.
Overall, a standard, complete exam, but extremely efficiently run. It’ll be 8am physicals for me from now on.
