Have you ever been so hot that you'd do anything to cool down? I'm not talking about sexual heat. I'm talking actual non-fever overheating due to temperature and exertion.
I foolishly did yard work last Sunday when it was mid 90°F & 90% humidity. I managed to get a little overheated. I was drinking Gatorades and still able to urinate but I got so hot I stopped sweating and my skin felt clammy. I stopped, went inside, put an ice pack on my neck and rested my wrists on another to try to cool my core but that only helped a bit.
My next option was a cool enema. This was something I'd heard about but never actually tried for myself. I'd already had an enema series on Saturday but this was more of an experiment in rapid body recovery from heat. So, I filled my bag with cold tap water, which was about mid 60°F with my infrared gun. I dropped a couple of ice cubes in it for good measure and assumed the position.
With a double balloon nozzle, retention is not a problem so I set it to the middle flow that will give a full 2qts in about 10 minutes. It did feel a bit chilly at first but the longer it ran, the better I felt. I did start to cramp about half way but kept going. I retained it for 10 minutes more and let it out.
The water was much warmer coming out so some of the heat was transferred to the water. I did feel much better but I stayed inside for the rest of the day. I also took a cool shower that felt pretty amazing to get all the salt out of my hair and skin. My clothes were crusty white with salt when I washed them later.
I have learned my lesson (not really) and won't be doing the hard stuff while the sun is well over head!
What do you do to avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke? Air conditioning has been one of the greatest inventions known to man. It makes half the planet livable when it used to only be survivable.
