I had a rather pedestrian physical exam this morning. Nothing out of the ordinary, but nothing disappointing either. When I was first brought back, the nurse stopped me to get my weight and height. I made sure to empty the contents of my pockets to get as accurate a weight as possible. I was then led into the exam room where the nurse took my blood pressure and pulse. The nurse then asked whether I had had a physical from this particular doctor before. I said I had and she responded "well you know he has his patients change into a gown." I mentioned last year I was provided disposable exam shorts and she responded with something like "oh yeah, he doesn't use those anymore". I got clarification regarding which direction to have the gown facing and then was left to change. I kept my underwear and began the wait.
And then I waited and waited and waited some more...
25 minutes later, after freezing and doing my best to keep warm wrapped in a cloth gown that didn't quite want to stay up on my shoulders, the doctor came in.
I would say the majority of the exam was the interview/medical history/concerns part. He then began the exam with a check of my eyes, ears, and nose. He felt the lymph nodes in my neck and the surrounding areas. He then used auscultated by lungs by having me breath deeply while he checked several places on my back. He then lowered the top of my gown which was practically falling off anyway and ausculated my chest.
Next he had me lie on my back and lowered the gown a little further. He did some quick abdominal palpations and then quickly felt my inguinal lymph nodes over my underwear. He then did a leg strength test and an arm strength test then informed me he needed to check my testicles.
He sat down in his rolling chair while putting on his gloves and had me stand up in front of him. By this point my gown was basically a sheet on my lap due to all the shifting, so I really had no choice but to set it aside and stand up in just my underwear. Once his gloves were on, I lowered my underwear and he began by palpating both testicles. He then did something I had never had done at a physical - he grasped my penis and lifted it checking the sides and underside. Finally, he checked for a hernia with the typical "turn your head a cough" test and then told me I could get dressed.
The nurse came back in after a few minutes, gave me a booster shot, and then directed me to the lab to get by blood drawn.
Overall, a very typical exam. It was an almost identical procedure to last year's with the exception of the gown and the very brief inspection of my penis.
