Hiatus
Events over the past few months have confirmed that, for whatever underlying reason, I must cease recreational enemas.
I can get my bowels under control, AKA regularity, with daily doses of Miralax. Whatever the change that occurred in my colon earlier this year appears to be permanent.
My attempt to back off from the daily laxative several months ago resulted in a mighty impaction that required an oil enema, a regular enema and a bottle of Mag Citrate to ultimately resolve. My butt hole was sore for a fortnight.
Two weeks ago I tried taking an enema to see what would happen. The enema itself went well, a nice three quart soapsuds enema using a colon tube. Two days later I had a somewhat hard BM, but then things settled down. The following week I did a retention enema, much smaller in volume, one and a half quarts of baking soda solution. There was some initial leaking, even using a double balloon nozzle, but in the end, it was a good session.
However I didn't go for three days afterwards and then it was a struggle to pass the fairly hard. but fortunately not bolus-shaped, stool.
All this while still taking the laxative.
So I concluded that enema play would no longer be wise. I return to the doctor sometime next month, but I do not know what else, short of invasive testing, that he can do. I've been trying another course of Linzess to see if that drug does anything to help.
Ah well, as we age we adapt.
