Veronica gets sick

chapter 14 The unexpected discovery

Jackson sat beside Veronica's hospital bed, his fingers intertwined with hers. He kept glancing toward the doorway where Dr. Reynolds had disappeared.

"Jackson?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"You're doing it again."

"Doing what, baby?"

"That thing with your jaw. You clench it when you're worried."

Jackson relaxed his jaw and managed a small smile.

"You know me too well, Mrs. Williams."

Veronica looked toward the door.

"Why haven't they come back?"

"It's only been a few minutes, angel."

"It feels like hours."

He leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

"I know, baby."

Just then, Dr. Morgan entered, followed by Dr. Reynolds.

Jackson immediately stood.

"What did the radiologist find?"

Dr. Morgan pulled a chair beside Veronica.

"First, I want you both to know that we don't have evidence of a new emergency. The radiologist noticed something on the ultrasound that deserves a closer look."

Veronica tightened her grip on Jackson's hand.

"Something wrong with the babies?"

"Not necessarily," Dr. Morgan replied. "But we need to clarify an unusual finding."

Jackson frowned.

"What kind of finding?"

Dr. Morgan turned the ultrasound monitor toward them and displayed the images.

"Here is the first gestational sac, where we identified embryonic cardiac activity."

Veronica smiled faintly.

"That's our little fighter."

Dr. Morgan nodded.

"And here is the second sac. It's smaller, and its development remains uncertain."

Veronica's smile faded.

"But there's something else?" Jackson asked.

Dr. Morgan enlarged a portion of the image.

"Yes. The radiologist noticed an additional small fluid-filled structure near the second sac."

Jackson leaned forward.

"Could it be another gestational sac?"

"It's possible, but it would be premature to call it that. It could also be a small collection of fluid or another structure that looks similar on ultrasound."

Veronica stared at the screen.

"Jackson, what are they saying?"

He looked at his wife.

"Sweetheart, they're saying there may be another little area they need to examine."

Veronica's eyes widened.

"Another baby?"

Dr. Morgan smiled gently.

"That's one possibility, Veronica, but we don't have enough evidence to say you're carrying three babies."

Veronica turned toward Jackson.

"Three?"

Jackson looked stunned.

"Well," he whispered, "that would certainly change our nursery plans."

Veronica stared at him.

"JACKSON MICHAEL WILLIAMS!"

He laughed nervously.

"I'm sorry, baby."

"Don't you dare laugh! I'm still trying to figure out how we're going to manage two!"

Dr. Morgan smiled.

"Before we start counting cribs, let's arrange a detailed follow-up ultrasound with maternal-fetal medicine when the timing is appropriate. They specialize in evaluating complicated pregnancies."

Veronica sighed.

"Another ultrasound."

"Yes," Dr. Morgan replied. "But not necessarily another one today. We want the pregnancy to develop enough that the images can give us clearer answers."

Jackson nodded.

"That makes sense."

Veronica crossed her arms.

"Of course it makes sense to you. You're a doctor!"

He leaned down and kissed her cheek.

"And you're my favorite patient."

She pointed a finger at him.

"Don't start!"

Dr. Morgan chuckled.

"Now, let's focus on getting you recovered from surgery."

She reviewed Veronica's latest vital signs and laboratory results.

"Your blood count has remained stable since the operation. That's reassuring. We still need to address the dizziness you experienced when sitting up."

Veronica groaned.

"Please don't tell me I have to get up again."

"Not immediately. We'll allow you to rest, then try a gradual position change with assistance."

Jackson looked at his wife.

"Baby, we need to make sure you can move safely before going home."

Veronica sighed dramatically.

"I knew you were going to say that."

He smiled.

"You married a doctor, sweetheart."

"And sometimes I wonder why!"

Everyone laughed.

After the physicians left, Jackson sat beside Veronica.

She was unusually quiet.

"What's going on in that pretty head of yours?" he asked.

Veronica looked down at her abdomen.

"Jackson, what if there really are three babies?"

He took a deep breath.

"Then we'll learn how to take care of three babies."

"But what if one isn't growing?"

His expression softened.

"Then we'll listen to the specialists and take things one day at a time."

Veronica began crying.

"I don't want to lose any of them."

Jackson wrapped his arms around her.

"I know, angel."

She rested her head against his chest.

"Jackson, I'm tired of being scared."

He kissed her hair.

"I know, sweetheart."

"And I'm tired of doctors."

He chuckled.

"Even me?"

She looked up.

"Especially you!"

He laughed.

"Well, that's unfortunate."

She smiled weakly.

"But I still love you."

"Good. Because I'm rather fond of you too."

A little later, Caroline returned with a fresh hospital gown and supplies for Veronica's postoperative care.

"All right, honey. How about we get you cleaned up and into a fresh gown?"

Veronica looked relieved.

"That sounds wonderful."

Caroline checked the surgical dressings before helping Veronica wash her face and arms.

"Any pain here?" she asked, gently examining the skin around one incision.

"A little sore."

"Any sharp pain?"

"No."

"Good."

Jackson stood nearby.

"Do you need me to step outside, sweetheart?"

Veronica immediately shook her head.

"No! Stay."

He smiled.

"All right, baby."

Caroline helped Veronica change her gown while maintaining her privacy, then adjusted the pillows behind her.

"Better?"

"Much."

Caroline checked her temperature.

"Ninety-eight point six."

Veronica grinned.

"Finally, something normal!"

Jackson laughed.

"Let's celebrate."

She looked at him.

"With pizza?"

"Baby, you are relentless."

"Extra cheese!"

"And breadsticks," he added.

Veronica smiled.

"You're learning."

Later that evening, Dr. Reynolds returned to discuss the next steps in Veronica's recovery.

"Veronica, if your blood count remains stable, your pain is controlled, and you're able to get up without significant dizziness, we may be able to discharge you tomorrow or the following day."

Veronica's face brightened.

"Really?"

"Possibly. But we need to make sure you're ready."

She looked at Jackson.

"Did you hear that?"

He smiled.

"I did, sweetheart."

"Home!"

"Maybe soon, baby."

Dr. Reynolds continued.

"I also want you to understand that you'll need to avoid strenuous activity while your incisions heal. Walking short distances is encouraged, but no heavy lifting until the surgical team clears you."

Veronica nodded.

"How heavy is heavy?"

Jackson raised an eyebrow.

"Veronica..."

She turned toward him.

"Don't you start!"

Dr. Reynolds chuckled.

"We'll give you specific instructions before discharge."

After the surgeon left, Jackson pulled his chair closer.

"Now, sweetheart, I have a question."

Veronica looked suspicious.

"What?"

"Have you been thinking about trying to get out of bed by yourself?"

She looked away.

"Maybe."

"Veronica Marie Williams."

She sighed.

"There it is. The doctor voice."

Jackson smiled but remained serious.

"Baby, you nearly fainted when we tried earlier. Please call for help before standing."

She looked at him.

"I don't want to be helpless."

His expression softened.

"Needing help while you recover doesn't make you helpless."

She nodded reluctantly.

"Okay."

"Promise?"

She sighed.

"I promise."

Jackson kissed her forehead.

"Thank you, angel."

Several hours later, Jackson was asleep in the reclining chair beside Veronica's bed.

The room was quiet except for the soft sounds of the monitoring equipment.

Veronica opened her eyes.

She needed to use the bathroom.

She looked toward Jackson.

He was sleeping soundly, his head tilted to one side.

She smiled.

"Poor thing," she whispered. "He's exhausted."

She reached for the call button, then hesitated.

It's only a few steps, she thought.

I can do this.

Carefully, she pushed the blanket aside.

She moved her legs toward the edge of the bed.

Her abdomen pulled painfully.

"Ouch," she whispered.

She paused, then slowly pushed herself upright.

For a moment, everything seemed fine.

She sat on the edge of the bed, breathing carefully.

"See?" she whispered to herself. "I can do this."

She placed her feet on the floor.

But as she stood, the room suddenly tilted.

"Oh..."

She grabbed the bed rail.

Her vision blurred.

"Jackson?"

Her voice was barely audible.

She tried again.

"Jackson!"

He awakened immediately.

"Von?"

Then he saw her standing unsteadily beside the bed.

"VERONICA!"

He rushed toward her just as her knees buckled.

He caught her beneath the arms and carefully supported her back onto the bed.

"Baby! What are you doing?"

Veronica was pale and trembling.

"I just needed the bathroom."

Jackson pressed the call button.

"Caroline! I need some help in here!"

Veronica looked frightened.

"Jackson, please don't yell."

He stopped immediately.

He took a breath.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart. You scared me."

Caroline hurried into the room.

"What happened?"

"She tried to stand without assistance and became dizzy," Jackson explained.

Caroline immediately checked Veronica's blood pressure and pulse.

"Eighty-eight over fifty-four. Pulse one hundred and ten."

Jackson frowned.

"That's too low."

Caroline helped Veronica lie back and elevated the head of the bed only slightly.

"Veronica, any chest pain or trouble breathing?"

"No."

"Any new abdominal pain?"

"Just where the incisions are."

"Any bleeding?"

"I don't think so."

Caroline nodded.

"I'm going to notify the physician."

Veronica began crying.

"Jackson, I'm sorry."

He sat beside her.

"Baby, look at me."

She reluctantly turned toward him.

"I'm not angry with you."

"But you sounded angry."

"I was frightened. I should have spoken more calmly."

She wiped her eyes.

"I didn't want to wake you."

Jackson took her hand.

"Sweetheart, I would rather you wake me a hundred times than risk falling."

She nodded.

"Okay."

He kissed her forehead.

"Please use the call button next time."

"I promise."

Caroline returned with Dr. Harris, who examined Veronica and reviewed the latest vital signs.

"Veronica, I want to check your blood count again and make sure the dizziness isn't related to further blood loss or another problem."

Veronica groaned.

"Another blood test?"

Dr. Harris smiled sympathetically.

"I'm afraid so."

Jackson squeezed her hand.

"Baby, I think we're going to have to start charging the hospital for all the blood they're borrowing."

Veronica laughed weakly.

"Then we'd be rich!"

But as Caroline prepared the supplies, Veronica suddenly pressed her hand against her lower abdomen.

"Jackson?"

He leaned forward.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

She looked frightened.

"I feel something."

"What do you mean?"

She swallowed.

"Something warm."

Jackson's expression changed.

"Where, baby?"

Veronica looked down at the blanket.

"Between my legs."

Caroline immediately stepped closer.

"Veronica, are you bleeding?"

Veronica's eyes filled with tears.

"I think so."

Jackson gently pulled back the blanket as Caroline helped assess the situation.

A fresh stain of bright red blood was visible on the absorbent pad.

Veronica began sobbing.

"Jackson, not again!"

He took her hand.

"Oh, sweetheart."

Dr. Harris immediately called for Dr. Morgan.

And as Veronica cried in her husband's arms, Jackson realized their frightening journey was far from over.

To be continued...
