Veronica gets sick
chapter 12 The Longest hours of jacksons life
Dr. Reynolds pulled his chair closer to Veronica's hospital bed. Jackson stood beside her, holding her hand tightly.
"Veronica, I want to explain exactly what we're concerned about," Dr. Reynolds began. "Your ultrasound shows fluid in your abdomen that we believe may be blood. There's also an abnormal area near your right ovary. Combined with your falling blood pressure, severe pain, and fainting, we're concerned you may have a ruptured ovarian cyst that's bleeding."
Veronica swallowed hard.
"Can't you just give me medicine?"
"I wish it were that simple," Dr. Reynolds replied. "Sometimes bleeding from a ruptured cyst stops on its own. But your symptoms suggest we may not have the luxury of waiting."
Jackson looked at the surgeon.
"What's her latest hemoglobin?"
"Nine point four. It was eleven point two when she arrived."
Jackson closed his eyes.
Veronica immediately noticed.
"Jackson Michael Williams, don't you dare start keeping things from me!"
He opened his eyes and looked at her.
"Baby, your blood count has dropped. That suggests you've lost some blood."
"How much?"
"We can't tell exactly from that number alone, sweetheart."
Dr. Reynolds continued.
"I recommend diagnostic laparoscopy, with the possibility of treating the source of bleeding during the procedure. We'd make several small incisions in your abdomen and insert a camera to examine the pelvic organs."
Veronica stared at him.
"You're going to put a camera inside my stomach?"
"Inside your abdominal cavity, yes. We'll use instruments through the other small incisions to control any bleeding we find."
"Will I be awake?"
"No. You'll receive general anesthesia."
Veronica turned toward Jackson.
"Jackson, I don't want to be put to sleep!"
He sat on the edge of the chair beside her.
"Sweetheart, I know you're frightened."
"What if I don't wake up?"
His expression softened.
"Baby, the anesthesia team will be monitoring you very closely. There are risks, and they'll explain them, but they take every precaution to keep patients safe."
Dr. Reynolds nodded.
"We also need to discuss the pregnancy. Surgery and anesthesia during pregnancy require careful planning. But untreated internal bleeding can be much more dangerous to you and the pregnancy."
Veronica began crying.
"Jackson, we just found out about our babies!"
He wrapped his arms around her.
"I know, angel. I know."
Dr. Reynolds allowed them a moment before continuing.
"Veronica, I also need your permission to perform additional procedures if necessary. If we find a bleeding ovarian cyst, we'll try to preserve as much healthy ovarian tissue as possible. If there's severe bleeding that cannot be controlled laparoscopically, we may need to make a larger incision."
Veronica looked horrified.
"A bigger incision?"
"It's a possibility, not a certainty."
Jackson gently rubbed her back.
"Baby, let's listen to the whole explanation."
She nodded reluctantly.
Dr. Reynolds carefully reviewed the risks, including bleeding, infection, injury to surrounding organs, complications of anesthesia, and possible effects on the pregnancy.
When he finished, he placed the consent form on the bedside table.
"Take a moment to ask any questions."
Veronica stared at the paper.
"Jackson?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Would you let them do this if it were you?"
He took a deep breath.
"Given what the doctors have found and how sick you've been, yes, baby. I would."
She wiped her eyes.
"Then I guess we need to do it."
Dr. Reynolds looked directly at her.
"Veronica, I want to make sure this is your decision and that you understand why we're recommending surgery."
She nodded.
"I understand. I'm scared, but I don't want the bleeding to get worse."
After her questions were answered, Veronica signed the consent form.
Caroline entered shortly afterward.
"All right, honey. We're going to begin preparing you for surgery."
Veronica looked suspiciously at the tray Caroline was carrying.
"More needles?"
Jackson couldn't help chuckling.
"Baby, I think that might become your favorite question."
She glared at him.
"Jackson Michael, this is not funny!"
He kissed her forehead.
"You're right, sweetheart. I'm sorry."
Caroline checked Veronica's identification bracelet and confirmed her allergies.
"Veronica, when was the last time you ate or drank anything?"
"Some soup yesterday afternoon."
"All right. We'll keep you from eating or drinking anything further before anesthesia."
Caroline then checked her IV and collected the ordered blood samples for a repeat blood count and blood bank testing.
Veronica turned her face away.
"Jackson, please talk to me."
He held her hand.
"All right, baby. What color should we paint the nursery?"
She stared at him.
"Jackson! We don't even know if we're having one baby or two!"
"Well, I thought we could start planning."
She smiled despite herself.
"Maybe yellow."
"Yellow?"
"Yes. Something cheerful."
Jackson kissed her cheek.
"Yellow it is."
A few minutes later, an anesthesiologist entered.
"Hello, Veronica. I'm Dr. Mitchell. I'll be taking care of your anesthesia."
Veronica immediately grabbed Jackson's hand.
"Are you the one who's going to put me to sleep?"
"Yes," Dr. Mitchell replied. "I'd like to ask you some questions and examine you before we go to the operating room."
He reviewed her medical history, medications, allergies, and previous experiences with anesthesia.
"Have you ever had problems with anesthesia before?"
Veronica shook her head.
"No, but I've never been pregnant during surgery."
"That's understandable. We'll adjust our plan to your medical condition and pregnancy."
Dr. Mitchell examined her airway, asking her to open her mouth and tilt her head slightly.
"Open wide for me, please."
Veronica complied.
He looked at the back of her throat, assessed her neck movement, and listened to her heart and lungs.
"Take a deep breath."
She inhaled.
"And again."
He then explained that because of her pregnancy and urgent condition, the anesthesia team would take precautions to protect her airway and closely monitor her blood pressure, oxygen levels, breathing, and heart rhythm.
Veronica listened quietly.
Finally, she asked, "Will Jackson be allowed in the operating room?"
Dr. Mitchell shook his head.
"Not during the operation, I'm afraid."
Her eyes immediately filled with tears.
"But he promised he wouldn't leave me!"
Jackson sat beside her.
"Baby, I'll walk with you as far as they'll let me, and I'll be waiting when you wake up."
She began crying.
"I don't want to go without you."
He wrapped his arms around her.
"Oh, sweetheart."
For several minutes, Jackson simply held her.
Then Caroline returned.
"Veronica, it's time."
Veronica's grip tightened around Jackson's hand.
"Already?"
"I'm afraid so, honey."
Jackson helped straighten her hospital gown and pulled the blanket around her.
"Are you warm enough, baby?"
She nodded.
"Jackson?"
"Yes, angel?"
"Will you kiss me?"
He leaned down and kissed her gently.
"I love you, Veronica Marie Williams."
She began crying again.
"I love you too, Jackson Michael Williams."
The transport team began moving the stretcher toward the operating room.
Jackson walked beside her, holding her hand.
At the entrance to the restricted surgical area, Caroline stopped.
"Dr. Williams, this is as far as you can go."
Veronica immediately became frightened.
"Jackson!"
He leaned over her.
"Baby, look at me."
She turned toward him.
"You're going to be okay without me standing beside you for a little while. These people are going to take good care of you."
"Promise you'll be there when I wake up?"
"I promise I'll be waiting, sweetheart."
She squeezed his hand one last time.
"Jackson, please take care of our babies."
His eyes filled with tears.
"That's exactly what we're trying to do, angel. Take care of you and them."
Caroline gently guided the stretcher through the doors.
Jackson stood motionless, watching until his wife disappeared from sight.
For the first time in years, he felt completely powerless.
Inside the operating room, Veronica looked around nervously.
The room was brightly lit, with monitors positioned near the anesthesia machine and a stainless-steel instrument table beside the operating bed.
"All right, Veronica," Dr. Mitchell said gently. "We're going to help you move onto the operating table."
The nurses assisted her, making sure her IV tubing and monitoring leads were secure.
Veronica shivered.
"It's cold in here."
A nurse placed a warm blanket over her.
"Better?"
"A little."
Dr. Mitchell attached the ECG leads, pulse oximeter, and blood pressure cuff.
"Veronica, I'm going to give you oxygen through this mask while we prepare your anesthesia."
She nodded nervously.
The mask was placed gently over her nose and mouth.
"Take some slow, normal breaths."
Veronica obeyed.
"Is Jackson outside?"
"Yes, honey," the nurse reassured her. "He's waiting for you."
Dr. Mitchell checked the monitors and spoke quietly with the anesthesia team.
"All right, Veronica. We're ready to begin."
She looked frightened.
"Will it hurt?"
"You'll be asleep for the operation. We'll also give medication to help manage your pain afterward."
Veronica swallowed hard.
"Okay."
As the anesthetic medication began entering her IV, she whispered one final thing.
"Please tell Jackson I love him."
The nurse squeezed her hand.
"You can tell him yourself when you wake up, sweetheart."
Moments later, Veronica was asleep.
Meanwhile, Jackson sat alone in the surgical waiting room.
He stared at the clock.
Ten minutes passed.
Then twenty.
Then forty-five.
Every time the doors opened, he looked up.
Finally, after nearly two hours, Dr. Reynolds appeared.
Jackson immediately stood.
"Doctor? How is she?"
Dr. Reynolds approached him.
"Jackson, we found the source of the bleeding."
Jackson felt his heart pounding.
"Was it the ovary?"
"Yes. Veronica had a ruptured hemorrhagic cyst on her right ovary. There was a significant amount of blood in her pelvis."
Jackson swallowed.
"Were you able to control it?"
Dr. Reynolds nodded.
"We controlled the bleeding laparoscopically and preserved the ovary. She remained stable through the latter part of the procedure, and she's being transferred to recovery."
Jackson closed his eyes in relief.
"Thank God."
But then he looked at the surgeon again.
"And the babies?"
Dr. Reynolds hesitated.
"We didn't operate on the uterus, and there was no obvious uterine injury. However, we cannot determine the outcome of either pregnancy from the surgery itself. Obstetrics will reassess her when she's stable."
Jackson nodded slowly.
"Can I see her?"
"Very soon."
A short while later, Jackson was escorted into the recovery room.
Veronica lay beneath a warm blanket, an oxygen cannula resting beneath her nose. Her IV was still running, and the cardiac monitor beeped steadily beside her.
Jackson approached quietly.
"Von?"
She stirred.
"Jackson?"
He immediately took her hand.
"Yes, baby. I'm right here."
She opened her eyes slightly.
"Did I do okay?"
Jackson felt tears running down his cheeks.
"Oh, sweetheart, you did wonderfully."
She looked confused.
"Why are you crying?"
He leaned down and kissed her forehead.
"Because I love you, angel. And I'm so glad to see those beautiful eyes open again."
She smiled weakly.
"Jackson?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Did they fix me?"
He brushed her hair away from her face.
"They found the bleeding and stopped it, baby."
She sighed.
"Good."
Then she suddenly opened her eyes wider.
"The babies!"
Jackson squeezed her hand.
"Sweetheart, we still need another ultrasound. But the doctors took great care to protect you and the pregnancy."
Veronica began crying.
"Jackson, I'm scared."
He pulled his chair closer.
"I know, angel."
She looked down at her abdomen.
"Will you stay with me until we find out?"
Jackson kissed her hand.
"Every minute, sweetheart."
A recovery nurse approached to assess Veronica's pain and check her surgical dressings.
"Veronica, can you tell me how much pain you're having?"
She winced.
"About a seven."
The nurse nodded.
"I'll review your pain medication orders and get you more comfortable."
Veronica looked at Jackson.
"Do I have stitches?"
"Yes, baby. You have several small incisions covered with dressings."
She sighed.
"Jackson Michael Williams, I think I've had enough excitement for one lifetime."
He laughed softly.
"I couldn't agree more, Mrs. Williams."
She closed her eyes.
"Jackson?"
"Yes, angel?"
"Don't forget."
"Forget what, sweetheart?"
"My pizza."
Jackson burst out laughing.
"Oh, baby. I promise, when you're feeling better and the doctors say you can eat, I'll get you the biggest pizza in town."
She smiled sleepily.
"Extra cheese."
"Extra cheese."
"And breadsticks."
"And breadsticks."
But just as Veronica began drifting back to sleep, Dr. Morgan entered the recovery room.
"Jackson, Veronica, when you're ready, I'd like to arrange the follow-up ultrasound."
Jackson stood.
"Is something wrong?"
Dr. Morgan shook her head.
"We don't have new findings yet. But given everything Veronica has been through, I think it's important to reassess the pregnancy once she's sufficiently recovered from anesthesia."
Veronica opened her eyes.
"Jackson?"
He leaned down.
"Yes, baby?"
"Please tell me we're going to see both our babies."
Jackson kissed her forehead.
"I hope so with all my heart, sweetheart."
And for the first time that day, the usually confident physician had no answers.
Only hope.
To be continued...
