Veronica gets sick
chapter 10 A Husbands promise
Dr. Morgan sat beside Veronica's hospital bed, holding the laboratory results in her hand. Jackson stood behind his wife's pillow, gently rubbing her shoulders.
"All right, Doctor," Jackson said. "What did the blood work show?"
Dr. Morgan looked at Veronica.
"Your hemoglobin has dropped slightly since yesterday. It isn't dangerously low, but with the bleeding and fainting episodes, I want to continue monitoring you."
Veronica sighed.
"Does that mean more needles?"
"Possibly another blood test later today," Dr. Morgan answered. "But we'll try to minimize how often we need to draw blood."
Jackson noticed Veronica's lower lip beginning to tremble.
"Baby, look at me."
She turned toward him.
"Sweetheart, I know you're tired. But we need to understand what's happening."
"Jackson, I'm scared they're going to find something else wrong."
He kissed her forehead.
"I know, angel."
Dr. Morgan continued.
"Your blood type is O negative, Veronica. Because you've experienced vaginal bleeding during pregnancy, we need to discuss whether Rh immune globulin is recommended for you."
Veronica looked confused.
"What's that?"
"It's a medication that can help prevent your immune system from developing antibodies against Rh-positive blood. Whether it's needed this early depends on the circumstances and the clinical guidance we follow."
Veronica looked suspiciously at Jackson.
"Medication? Please don't tell me it's another shot!"
Jackson smiled sympathetically.
"It can be given as an injection, sweetheart."
"Oh, Jackson Michael Williams! I think I've had enough needles to last me a lifetime!"
Dr. Morgan smiled.
"We'll discuss the benefits and recommendations before making that decision."
After Dr. Morgan left, Jackson pulled his chair closer.
"How's your stomach, baby?"
"Still cramping, but not as badly."
"Any dizziness?"
"A little when I sit up."
Jackson nodded.
"Then we're going to take things slowly."
Veronica crossed her arms.
"And just how long are you planning to keep me in this hospital?"
"Sweetheart, that's for your medical team to decide."
She gave him a suspicious look.
"You mean you aren't going to give them orders?"
Jackson chuckled.
"No, Mrs. Williams. I'm going to behave myself."
"Well, that will be a first!"
He laughed and kissed her cheek.
"You're feeling well enough to tease me. That's encouraging."
A short while later, Caroline entered carrying a small tray.
"Good morning, Veronica. I need to check your vital signs and assess your IV."
Veronica groaned.
"Again?"
Caroline smiled.
"Again, honey."
She placed the thermometer beneath Veronica's tongue, then wrapped the blood pressure cuff around her upper arm.
Jackson watched the monitor.
"One hundred and six over sixty-six," Caroline announced. "Pulse ninety-four."
"Better," Jackson said.
Caroline checked the IV insertion site, gently touching the surrounding skin.
"Any pain or burning here?"
"No."
"Good. There's no visible redness or swelling."
She listened to Veronica's lungs with a stethoscope, moving it across her back.
"Take a deep breath for me."
Veronica inhaled.
"And again."
After several breaths, Caroline nodded.
"Your lungs sound clear."
Veronica looked at Jackson.
"Can I have breakfast now?"
He smiled.
"I think we can ask."
"Jackson, if you tell me I have to eat hospital oatmeal, I may scream!"
He burst out laughing.
"Sweetheart, I wouldn't dream of it."
But their lighthearted moment was interrupted when Veronica suddenly pressed her hand against her lower abdomen.
"Ouch!"
Jackson immediately stopped laughing.
"Baby?"
She winced.
"Another cramp."
"How bad?"
"About a six."
Jackson glanced toward Caroline.
"Would you let Dr. Morgan know?"
"Of course."
Veronica reached for his arm.
"Jackson, please don't start worrying again."
He sat beside her.
"Baby, I can't promise not to worry. But I can promise to stay calm."
She nodded.
"Okay."
When Dr. Morgan returned, she explained that she wanted to reassess Veronica's abdomen and review the bleeding.
"Veronica, I'm going to gently press on your lower abdomen. Tell me if anything hurts."
Veronica lay back and lifted her gown enough for the examination.
Dr. Morgan palpated the abdomen carefully.
"Any pain here?"
"No."
"And here?"
"A little."
"How about on the right?"
Veronica winced.
"Yes, there."
Dr. Morgan stopped pressing.
"All right. Thank you."
She then checked for abdominal guarding and asked about the frequency of the cramps.
"Are they constant or do they come and go?"
"They come and go."
"Any new bleeding?"
"Just a little when I went to the bathroom."
Dr. Morgan nodded.
"I don't think another speculum examination is necessary right now. We already have the earlier findings, and I don't want to repeat an uncomfortable procedure without a reason."
Veronica looked relieved.
"Thank you!"
Jackson chuckled.
"I think you just became her favorite doctor."
Dr. Morgan smiled.
"Now, I would like to discuss a follow-up ultrasound. We need to monitor the hematoma and reassess both gestational sacs, but repeating the scan too soon may not provide new answers."
Veronica looked down.
"Do you think both babies will be okay?"
Dr. Morgan pulled her chair closer.
"Veronica, I wish I could promise that. The first pregnancy has findings appropriate for its early stage. The second is less developed on the images, and we need time before we can make a reliable assessment."
Veronica's eyes filled with tears.
Jackson took her hand.
"Baby, one day at a time."
She nodded.
After Dr. Morgan left, Veronica was unusually quiet.
Jackson studied her.
"What's going on in that pretty head of yours?"
She shrugged.
"Nothing."
"Veronica Marie."
She looked up.
"Jackson, please don't use that voice."
He softened immediately.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart. I just know something is bothering you."
She began crying.
"What if I have to go through all these examinations and tests, and we still lose one of our babies?"
Jackson moved closer.
"Then we'll grieve together, angel. But we aren't there yet."
She rested her head against his shoulder.
"I wanted this to be such a happy time."
"I know, baby."
For several minutes they sat together in silence.
Then Veronica suddenly looked up.
"Jackson?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Will you promise me something?"
"What's that?"
"If something happens, don't become Dr. Williams and forget to be my husband."
Jackson felt tears sting his eyes.
He took both her hands.
"Veronica, I promise. No matter what happens, you will always have your husband first."
She smiled faintly.
"Even if I complain?"
"Even if you complain."
"Even if I refuse another needle?"
He chuckled.
"We'll talk about why it's needed, sweetheart."
"Even if I call you a stubborn old goat?"
Jackson laughed.
"Especially then."
Veronica leaned forward and kissed him.
"I love you, Jackson Michael Williams."
"And I love you, Veronica Marie Williams."
Later that afternoon, Caroline returned to help Veronica sit up and try some lunch.
Veronica managed a few bites of soup before pushing the tray away.
"Jackson, I feel sick again."
He immediately reached for the basin.
"Here, baby."
She leaned forward, gagging several times before vomiting.
Jackson supported her shoulders while Caroline brought a cool washcloth.
"Easy, sweetheart," he whispered.
When the nausea passed, Veronica leaned back against her pillows, exhausted.
"I'm sorry."
Jackson gently wiped her mouth.
"Baby, there's nothing to apologize for."
Caroline checked her pulse and blood pressure again.
"She's still a little tachycardic," she told Jackson. "I'll let Dr. Morgan know she's having trouble keeping food down."
Veronica closed her eyes.
"I just want to sleep."
Jackson pulled the blanket around her.
"Then sleep, angel."
He dimmed the lights and sat beside her.
But less than an hour later, Veronica awakened with a sharp cry.
"JACKSON!"
He jumped to his feet.
"What is it, baby?"
She grabbed his arm.
"My stomach! Jackson, something's wrong!"
He pressed the call button.
"Where does it hurt, sweetheart?"
She pointed toward her lower right abdomen.
"Right there! It's sharp!"
Jackson's expression grew serious.
"Caroline!" he called as the nurse entered. "She's having sudden, sharp right-sided abdominal pain."
Caroline immediately assessed Veronica's vital signs while Jackson remained beside her.
Dr. Morgan arrived moments later.
"Veronica, I need to examine you again."
Veronica was crying.
"Please, Doctor, just make it stop!"
Dr. Morgan gently assessed her abdomen, then looked toward Jackson.
"Given the sudden change in her pain, we need to consider causes beyond the hematoma. I want an urgent reassessment and imaging."
Jackson nodded.
"Agreed."
Veronica looked at her husband.
"Jackson, what's happening?"
He took her hand.
"Sweetheart, the doctors need to find out why you're hurting."
She began trembling.
"Am I going to need surgery?"
Jackson swallowed hard.
"We don't know, baby."
Dr. Morgan placed a reassuring hand on Veronica's shoulder.
"Let's get the imaging and examination completed first. Then we'll talk about what the findings mean."
As Caroline prepared to take Veronica for further testing, Veronica grabbed Jackson's hand.
"Jackson, please don't leave me."
He leaned down and kissed her forehead.
"Not a chance, angel."
She looked into his eyes.
"Promise?"
Jackson squeezed her hand.
"I promise, Veronica. Whatever happens next, we face it together."
But as the stretcher began moving toward radiology, Jackson noticed something that made his heart sink.
Veronica's face had become pale again, and she was struggling to keep her eyes open.
"Von? Baby, talk to me."
She barely whispered his name.
"Jackson..."
Then her eyes closed.
"VERONICA!"
To be continued...
