Mo stór

The fluorescent lights of the maternity ward in Killybegs didn’t hum; they screamed. It was a high-pitched, electric shriek that seemed to drill directly into Devon Drapper’s skull, competing with the rhythmic, thunderous pounding of his own heart and the guttural roar of contractions tearing through his lower abdomen.

Devon lay spread-eagled on the delivery bed, a landscape of vulnerability in the center of what was essentially the town’s living room. In a village where everyone knew everyone’s business, the hospital staff wasn’t just medical personnel; they were neighbors, cousins, old schoolmates, and people who had bought Devon pints at The Rusty Nail when he was still getting into bar fights. And right now, they were all watching him.

He was nude, save for a sterile white drape that did a mediocre job of covering his breasts and the curve of his belly, leaving his legs splayed wide apart in stirrups. His knees were bent, feet flat against the metal rests, and his hairless, bare vagina and bottom were on full display for nearly the entire hospital staff. There were at least twelve people in the room. Nurse Mary from three streets over was adjusting the IV drip. Dr. O’Malley, the burly gray-haired obstetrician who had delivered half the men in this county, stood between Devon’s thighs like a general surveying a battlefield. Behind them, leaning against the walls or sitting on rolling stools, were nurses, midwives, and even a few junior residents who had been summoned because "it’s a Drapper birth," which in Killybegs meant it was an event of historical significance.

Devon gritted his teeth, his knuckles white as he gripped the side rails of the bed. His tousled brown locks were plastered to his forehead with sweat, and his green eyes were squeezed shut, trying to block out the sea of faces. He could feel their eyes on him—on his exposed skin, on his trembling muscles, on the sheer absurdity of Darren Drapper’s youngest son, the rebel with the golden heart, being reduced to a biological machine by nature.

"Easy there, Dev," Dr. O’Malley boomed, his voice loud enough to rattle the instruments tray. The doctor was a big man, with a booming laugh and a demeanor that suggested he’d rather be drinking tea than performing surgery, but he got the job done. He wiped his hands on a towel, looking down at Devon with a mixture of professional focus and paternal amusement. "How are we feeling? Are you ready to meet your little lad?"

Devon opened one eye, glaring up at him. "I’m in labor, Jim. I’m not ready for anything except for this pain to stop."

Jim chuckled, the sound deep and resonant. "Nerves are natural. But seriously, how’s the pressure? You know, in the peepee area?"

Devon felt a flush rise from his chest to his cheeks, burning hot under the clinical gaze of the room. "It’s called my vagina, Jim. And yes, it feels like a truck is backing into it."

A ripple of laughter went through the room. Nurse Mary smiled gently. "That’s normal, Devon. It means he’s coming down. Just relax those muscles for me."

"I can’t relax!" Devon snapped, though there was no real heat in it. Another contraction hit him, sudden and violent, seizing his core. He arched his back off the mattress, a cry tearing from his throat. His body betrayed him, tensing up, fighting the very thing it needed to do.

"Here we go," Jim announced, clapping his hands together once. "Breathe, Devon. In through the nose, out through the mouth. Don’t push yet. Let me see."

Jim leaned in closer, peering between Devon’s legs with the intensity of a hawk spotting a mouse. Devon felt a wave of embarrassment so profound it almost overshadowed the pain. He was a grown man, a father-to-be (soon to be a single father), an artist who sold prints at the local gallery, a man who could fix a roof and change a tire. Yet here he was, naked, with his legs held open by strangers, being examined like a child.

"Okay, let’s have a look," Jim said, his tone shifting slightly. He reached out, his large, warm hand resting on Devon’s hip. "Relax, boy. You’re doing great."

Boy. The word stung, not because it was inaccurate—he was only twenty-four—but because of the way Jim said it. With such condescending affection. Like Devon was his own son, not his colleague.

Jim inserted two fingers into Devon’s vagina, stretching the tissue, checking the dilation. Devon gasped, his head throwing back. The intrusion was intimate, invasive, and utterly necessary.

"You’re ten centimeters," Jim declared, pulling his hand out with a wet pop. "Fully dilated. Time to push, laddie."

"Wait," Devon panted, his chest heaving. "I need... I need a moment."

"No time," Jim said cheerfully. "Rhett doesn’t wait. Rhett wants out. Now, I want you to grab the handles, take a big breath, and push like you’re trying to fart out a brick. But gently. Gentle pressure first."

Devon groaned, grabbing the handles. He took a breath, held it, and bore down. The pressure was immense, a crushing weight forcing its way down. He pushed, grunting, his face turning red.

"Good! Good!" Jim encouraged. "Now breathe. Again. Push!"

Another contraction seized him. Devon pushed harder, his legs trembling. He could feel the baby’s head pressing against his vaginal opening, stretching the tissue to its limit. It burned. It stretched. It felt like he was being split in two.

"Look at that crowning," Jim said, his voice dropping to a more serious, yet still oddly cheerful tone. "There’s the head. See? Dark, glistening, slimy with vernix. Beautiful. Just keep breathing, Devon. Don’t push too hard. Let it come out slowly. We don’t want any tears, do we?"

"I don’t care about the tears," Devon wheezed, sweat dripping from his nose onto the white drape. "I just want this kid out."

"Feisty," Jim laughed. "Just like his dad. Okay, one more big push. On three. One... two... three!"

Devon pushed with everything he had. His abdominal muscles screamed. His vision blurred at the edges. He felt a sharp, searing stretch, and then a sudden release of pressure.

"Out comes the head!" Jim announced triumphantly. "Great work, Devon. Now, relax again. Wait for the next contraction. We’ve got the shoulders to deliver."

Devon lay there, panting heavily, his chest rising and falling rapidly. He felt exhausted, drained, but also strangely euphoric. The pain was still there, throbbing in waves, but the immediate terror of the unknown was gone. The head was out.

"Can I... can I see?" Devon asked, his voice weak.

Jim paused, looking at him with a soft smile. "Not yet, mate. Just rest. Breathe. The nurses are going to lift your legs up now to help guide the shoulders out. It’ll be easier that way."

Two nurses moved in, sliding their arms under Devon’s knees and lifting his legs up, holding them wide apart. This position changed the angle, putting more pressure on his perineum, but it also aligned the birth canal better. Devon felt exposed, vulnerable, his bare bottom pressed against the paper-covered sheet beneath him. He could feel the cool air on his skin, the eyes of the entire hospital staff on his most private parts.

"Okay, Devon," Jim said, positioning himself again. "Next contraction is coming. I want you to push again. Small, controlled pushes. Think about bringing the shoulders out. Imagine you’re pushing out two oranges."

Devon nodded, gripping the handles again. He waited, counting the seconds, waiting for the familiar tightening in his uterus. When it came, he pushed. It was harder this time, the shoulders being wider than the head. He felt a tearing sensation, a sharp sting, and then another surge of pressure.

"That’s it," Jim murmured, his hands guiding the baby’s head. "Come on, Rhett. Come on out."

With a final, powerful push, the rest of the body slid out. There was a gush of fluids and blood, warm and slick, coating Devon’s thighs and stomach. Rhett tumbled out into Jim’s capable hands, small and slippery and bright red.

For a second, there was silence in the room. Then, a collective sigh of relief washed over them.

"He’s beautiful," someone whispered.

"Look at those dimples!" another exclaimed.

Jim cleared the airway, suctioning the mucus from Rhett’s nose and mouth, then gave him a firm slap on the back. A cry erupted from the newborn, loud and strong, filling the room with the sound of life.

"He’s perfect," Jim said, smiling down at the baby. "Healthy lungs, good color. Congratulations, Devon."

Then, Jim looked up at Devon, who was lying there, naked and exhausted, his legs still held aloft by the nurses, his body covered in the evidence of birth. Jim’s expression softened, and he leaned in close, lowering his voice so only Devon could hear, though the rest of the room could probably still hear if they tried.

"You did good, son," Jim said, patting Devon’s arm. "Real good. Now, let’s get this little guy on your chest. Bonding time."

Before Devon could respond, Rhett was placed on Devon’s bare chest. The baby was warm, heavy, and smelled of milk and blood and newness. Devon immediately felt a flourish of love, a tidal wave of paternal need that crashed over him, washing away the pain, the embarrassment, the exhaustion. He wrapped his arms around Rhett, holding him close, burying his face in the baby’s damp hair.

"Oh god," Devon whispered, tears streaming down his face. "Oh god, he’s here."

The room erupted into applause. Nurses clapped, doctors smiled, and even the junior residents joined in. It was a chaotic, joyous scene, filled with the energy of a new beginning. But for Devon, the world had narrowed down to the small, squirming weight on his chest.
