Perks of Working at the Mall - Voyeur Version

Part 2: Light-tricks

Claire looked at him, then at the small box.

"What's in here?"

"Just another sample."

She opened it and pulled out a folded white tank top.

Claire blinked. "That's it?"

Harold shrugged. "We're looking at carrying some lighter basics for summer."

Claire unfolded it. The tank was simple—thin white cotton, narrow straps, a low but otherwise ordinary neckline. Holding it between her fingers, she could tell immediately that the material was lighter than most of the shirts the store carried.

"This is pretty thin."

"That's kind of the point."

Claire gave him a look. "Of course it is."

Harold smiled innocently.

By now, though, Claire was comfortable enough with their strange little arrangement that the shirt didn't particularly bother her. She'd already modeled braless camisoles and tighter tops for him, and this wasn't showing anything she hadn't more or less shown before.

At least, that was how it looked in the dressing room.

Claire changed privately, removing her bra and pulling the tank over her head. The dressing-room lights were relatively soft and slightly yellow, and when she looked at herself in the mirror the shirt simply seemed lightweight. Her nipples were noticeable beneath it, and if she looked carefully she could see the familiar broad contours surrounding them, but nothing struck her as especially revealing.

She tugged the hem downward.

"Thin," she decided.

But cute.

Claire turned sideways, checked the fit over her chest and waist, then smiled at herself. The white tank hugged her more closely than the earlier camisole and made her full chest look particularly prominent above her narrow waist.

She opened the dressing-room door.

"Okay. What do you think?"

Harold looked up.

And stopped.

Claire immediately noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You always say that."

Harold cleared his throat. "Come back here a second. The light's better."

Claire rolled her eyes but followed him toward the back work area.

She assumed he wanted to inspect the stitching.

Harold knew something she didn't.

The overhead fluorescent lights in the back room were considerably brighter and whiter than the lights inside the dressing rooms. He'd noticed the difference countless times while checking colors and fabrics.

The instant Claire stepped underneath them, the tank changed.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

Harold's attention snapped to her chest.

The white cotton still concealed her skin, but under the stronger light it no longer looked completely opaque. The high rounded shape of her breasts remained clearly defined beneath it, and the broad raised contours Harold had become obsessed with were easier to distinguish than they had ever been outside the security monitors.

Then he noticed something new.

Color.

Very faintly, the material over the centers of Claire's breasts carried a warmer cast than the surrounding white. It wasn't transparent enough for Harold to see her areolas properly, but there was enough difference for him to realize that the soft pink he'd glimpsed months earlier extended across those surprisingly broad circles.

Harold stared a little too long.

Claire noticed and smirked.

"Seriously?"

"What?"

"You've seen me without a bra before."

"I know."

"Then quit looking so shocked."

Harold forced his eyes upward.

Claire grinned.

She thought she understood perfectly.

The shirt was thin, she was braless, and Harold was being Harold. Part of her even enjoyed watching him struggle to pretend he was evaluating merchandise rather than her body.

What Claire didn't realize was that Harold wasn't merely staring because the tank showed the points of her nipples.

He was studying everything around them.

Under the unforgiving back-room lights, the raised circles appeared broader than he'd appreciated even on the cameras. The thin cotton followed their rounded edges closely enough that he could see where the smooth curve of each breast changed into the softer raised area surrounding the center.

And through the white fabric, there was just enough visibility to suggest more.

The pink beneath the cloth wasn't perfectly uniform. When Claire shifted beneath the lights, Harold could occasionally make out the faintest natural texture across the raised surface—nothing sharp or clearly defined, just tiny variations that appeared for a moment and vanished again whenever the material moved.

It was the first time he'd gotten anything approaching detail rather than outline.

Harold felt his curiosity flare immediately.

For months he'd been trying to reconstruct Claire's areolas from shadows and silhouettes. Now the tank was giving him fragments of the actual surface underneath: the broad shape, the soft pink tone, the fact that the raised area wasn't perfectly smooth.

Still not enough to see them clearly.

Just enough to make him want to.

Claire shifted her weight.

The fabric moved.

Most of the detail disappeared.

Harold's eyes followed it automatically.

Claire caught him.

"Harold."

He looked up.

She had one eyebrow raised.

"What?"

"You're supposed to be looking at the shirt."

"I am looking at the shirt."

Claire laughed.

"Uh huh."

There was something slightly different about the way he was staring tonight. More focused. Almost analytical. Claire couldn't quite put her finger on it, but it amused her more than it bothered her.

She put her hands on her hips.

"So? Does your extremely professional inspection have a verdict?"

Harold recovered himself.

"Turn around."

Claire did, showing him the back.

"The straps okay?"

"Yeah."

She turned back around.

Once again the overhead light fell directly across the front of the tank.

Harold's eyes dropped before he could stop them.

Claire saw it happen.

This time she deliberately waited a second before speaking.

"Better?"

Harold looked back at her face.

"Yeah."

Claire smiled faintly.

She liked reminding him that she knew he was looking.

The problem—for Harold—was that she still had no idea what he was looking at.

To Claire, the game was still about cleavage, nipples, and catching her middle-aged boss enjoying whatever little glimpse she happened to give him.

For Harold, it had become something much more specific.

The thin white tank had given him more than he'd ever gotten before: not merely the raised outline of Claire's unusually broad areolas, but the faintest suggestion of their color and natural surface beneath the fabric.

And yet the shirt still hid them completely.

It was almost worse than seeing less.

Harold now knew there was far more detail underneath than the contours alone had suggested.

He wanted to see it.

Claire tugged lightly at the bottom of the tank.

"Can I change now?"

Harold hesitated just a fraction too long.

Claire laughed.

"That's what I thought."

She turned and headed toward the dressing room.

Harold watched her go, then looked away before she could turn around and catch him again.

Claire was still smiling when she disappeared behind the door.

As far as she was concerned, she'd successfully teased Harold one more time.

She had no idea she'd just given his obsession something entirely new to work with.

------------------------------------------------

For the next few days Harold kept thinking about the white tank.

The cameras had already confirmed the broad raised contours, and the thin cotton had given him his first imperfect suggestion of their color and surface. But that only seemed to make the gaps more frustrating. He knew roughly what Claire's unusually puffy areolas looked like beneath clothing. He had caught that brief flash of soft pink months earlier. What he still lacked was anything more complete.

He found himself wondering how he might get a better look without making the reason obvious.

Another sheer white shirt would have been too transparent a choice in more ways than one.

So when the next shipment arrived, Harold spent considerably longer than necessary sorting through the samples. Eventually he settled on two tank tops that seemed innocent enough for Claire not to question them: one fitted and relatively high-cut, the other softer and lower at the neckline.

A week later Claire was closing the register when Harold appeared carrying several folded shirts.

"Oh no," she said immediately. "That's your modeling pile."

Harold smiled. "You recognize it now?"

"Unfortunately."

"It's only a few."

"How many is 'a few'?"

"Three."

Claire stared at him.

"Fine. Two tanks and another top."

She sighed theatrically. "You owe me."

"I always owe you."

That was true enough.

By now Claire had become almost comfortable with their strange little arrangement. Harold got his private fashion show every few weeks; she got flexibility with her schedule, the occasional free outfit, and the mildly amusing experience of watching her normally grumpy boss lose the ability to behave naturally whenever she came out wearing something particularly flattering.

Most of the time she found it funny.

The first tank Harold handed her was pale blue, soft, and cut surprisingly high across the chest.

Claire held it against herself. "This one's practically conservative."

"Try it."

She disappeared into the dressing room.

A few minutes later she returned without a bra. The higher neckline covered more skin than the white tank from the previous session, but the material fitted much more closely.

Harold noticed the tradeoff immediately.

The shirt left him no useful neckline at all, but under the brighter lights it followed the shape of Claire's chest almost continuously. The familiar broad contours surrounding her nipples were easier to recognize than they had been beneath the loose camisole, no longer appearing only when the fabric happened to settle perfectly.

Claire caught him looking.

"Really?"

Harold's eyes rose. "What?"

"You've been staring at the same spot since I walked out."

"I'm checking the fit."

"Apparently very carefully."

She was smiling when she said it.

Harold stepped closer and pinched a loose fold of material near her side between his fingers.

"See how it's pulling here?"

Claire looked down. "Not really."

He tugged the fabric outward slightly and let it settle again, then tested the hem between his fingertips.

Claire watched him.

His inspections had become more hands-on lately—not with her, exactly, but with whatever she was wearing. He seemed forever tugging at seams, testing straps, checking how material stretched. It was a little odd, though still well within the boundaries of the game they'd somehow created.

"Since when are you a tailor?" she asked.

"I'm checking how it sits."

"Mhm."

Harold pulled lightly at the hem.

The tension shifted across the front of the tank for an instant.

His eyes dropped.

Claire saw it happen.

A grin crept across her face. "That wasn't subtle."

Harold released the fabric. "Try the other one."

"Thought so."

She returned to the dressing room.

The second tank was white again, but softer and looser, with narrow straps and a noticeably lower neckline.

When Claire came back out, she was holding one strap between two fingers.

"Okay," she said. "This one is definitely more your style."

Harold tried not to react. "My style?"

"You know exactly what I mean."

Claire walked past him toward the mirror in the work area.

Unlike the first tank, this one didn't cling everywhere. It hung lightly over her chest and shifted whenever she moved, alternately concealing and revealing the broad contours underneath. Beneath the stronger lights, the white cotton also retained the faint warmer cast Harold remembered from the previous fitting.

He watched carefully.

Claire turned sideways in front of the mirror.

"Actually, this one's cute."

She leaned closer to inspect the fit around her waist.

The neckline slipped forward slightly.

Harold's attention snapped downward.

Pale skin appeared inside the shirt, but not enough.

Claire straightened.

The neckline returned to place.

Harold looked away just before she turned toward him.

"Well?"

"Looks good."

"Very professional assessment."

She smirked and turned back toward the mirror.

Harold had become painfully aware of how the shirt behaved. When Claire stood straight, it gave him almost nothing beyond the faint color and the changing contours beneath the cloth. When she leaned forward, the neckline loosened. When she stretched, the fabric drew closer.

Either one could reveal something.

Never quite both.

Then Claire noticed one of the mannequins near the display was still wearing an outfit from the previous week.

"Oh, I meant to change her."

She walked over and began pulling the mannequin's top upward. One sleeve immediately caught around its stiff plastic hand.

Claire tugged.

Nothing.

"You have got to be kidding me."

She pulled harder and the mannequin rocked toward her.

"Harold, hold this thing."

He crouched beside the base and steadied it with both hands while Claire reached upward.

The position felt strangely familiar.

Months earlier, she'd been working on almost the same display when the camisole lifted and Harold had caught only the smooth underside of one breast before losing the angle.

This time the tank was cut lower.

Claire stretched higher, trying to free the sleeve.

The neckline loosened.

Harold looked up.

For a fraction of a second he saw only the pale inside curve of her breast.

Then Claire reached farther.

The opening shifted.

Harold froze.

There was pink.

Not the tiny crescent he'd caught beneath the camisole months earlier. Considerably more.

Only part of one areola was visible, and only for an instant, but from this close the glimpse was startlingly clear. The exposed portion was soft pink and broadly rounded, curving much farther across the breast than Harold had imagined from that first fleeting flash. Its raised shape matched perfectly with the prominent contours he'd been studying through Claire's shirts for months.

He barely had time to register it.

Claire gave the sleeve another sharp pull.

It came free.

Her arms dropped.

The neckline fell back into place.

Gone.

The entire glimpse had lasted perhaps a second.

Harold remained crouched there.

Claire looked down at him.

"You can let go now."

He blinked. "What?"

"The mannequin."

"Oh."

He released it.

Claire narrowed her eyes slightly.

"You okay?"

"Fine."

"You look weird."

Harold glanced at the mannequin. "I'm crouching on the floor holding a plastic woman."

Claire laughed. "Fair."

She carried the discarded outfit toward the back room.

Harold followed a few seconds later.

His thoughts didn't.

For months he'd known Claire's areolas almost entirely as shapes beneath fabric: broad circles, pronounced projection, hints of pink through white cotton. The mannequin had given him only a fragment more, but that fragment had made the rest suddenly easier to imagine.

The color was real.

The breadth was real.

And from inches away, even that split-second glimpse had been enough for Harold to appreciate how unusual the shape actually was.

He wanted another look almost immediately.

That was beginning to trouble even him.

Claire, meanwhile, had already moved on.

---

Back in the work area, Harold asked her to stand beneath the brighter lights again.

"Still?"

"Just for a second."

Claire sighed, though there was amusement in it. "You are incredibly thorough tonight."

Harold stepped closer and examined one strap, then the neckline. He lifted a loose section of fabric carefully between two fingers, feeling how little substance there was to the cotton before letting it settle naturally again.

"Turn slightly."

Claire turned.

"Other way."

She turned back.

Harold moved with her, studying how the white material changed beneath the fluorescent light.

At this distance the effect he'd noticed earlier became more apparent. The tank still concealed Claire completely, but it was thin enough that the broad raised circles underneath carried a faint warmer tone than the surrounding fabric. Their outlines were soft rather than sharp, and the material revealed only suggestions of the surface beneath—tiny natural variations that appeared when the cotton settled closely and vanished again as soon as Claire shifted.

Harold leaned nearer.

A little nearer than necessary.

Claire glanced down at him.

"You're very interested in this one."

"The fabric's unusual."

"Right."

She didn't move away, but the answer clearly amused her.

Harold caught the edge of the tank near her side and drew it outward slightly, watching the front loosen, then let it fall back into place.

The cloth settled closer across her chest.

For a moment the broad contours sharpened again beneath the white.

His concentration became obvious.

Claire watched his face this time rather than the shirt.

There was something different about him tonight.

Not enough to make her uncomfortable. Harold was still Harold, and she still felt that she controlled the situation. But his attention had become strangely focused, as though there were some detail about this particular tank he was trying desperately to figure out.

She smiled.

"You're being a little weird."

Harold finally looked up. "I'm checking the material."

"You keep saying that."

"It's true."

"Mhm."

Claire smoothed the front of the tank herself.

Ironically, the motion pulled the material close for just a moment.

Harold's eyes dropped immediately.

Claire caught him.

"Hopeless."

He gave her an embarrassed smile.

Claire shook her head, still amused.

She thought she understood what was happening. She was standing braless beneath harsh fluorescent lighting in a very thin white tank, and her middle-aged boss was predictably fascinated by the view.

That explanation was close enough to the truth that she never looked any deeper.

"Can I change now?"

Harold hesitated.

Only for a fraction of a second.

Claire noticed anyway.

"There it is."

"What?"

"That disappointed face again."

"I don't have a disappointed face."

"You absolutely do."

She turned toward the dressing room, then glanced back over her shoulder.

"Enjoy the shirt while you can."

Harold smiled despite himself.

Claire disappeared behind the door.

She was still faintly amused by the whole thing. Harold had been creepier than usual tonight, certainly, but only by a degree. As far as Claire was concerned, she'd simply given him another opportunity to stare and had caught him doing it several times.

She still felt like she understood the game.

Harold remained standing beneath the fluorescent lights.

He'd gotten considerably more than he'd expected: a sustained suggestion of color beneath the white cotton, a closer sense of the broad raised shape through the fitted tank, and—entirely by accident—that breathtaking split-second glimpse while she worked on the mannequin.

It should have satisfied his curiosity.

Instead it had sharpened it.

Claire still thought Harold was trying to see down her shirt.

In a sense, he was.

She just had no idea how specific the thing he hoped to see had become.

--------------------------------------------------------

The next time Harold brought out the modeling pile, there was a cloth measuring tape sitting on top of it.

Claire noticed immediately.

"Oh, great. What now?"

"I want actual measurements this time."

"You sell clothes, Harold. You know what a size small is."

"Different suppliers cut things differently."

Claire picked up the tape and looked at him suspiciously. "You've become very serious about this."

"Professional standards."

"Sure."

She was still wearing the thin white tank from the fitting, and under the brighter back-room lights Harold could already make out the familiar broad contours beneath it. Claire knew the shirt was revealing. By now that was part of the joke between them.

What she didn't know was how specific Harold's interest had become.

He started normally enough.

Waist first.

Claire stood with her arms slightly raised while Harold passed the tape around her narrow waist, careful not to touch her skin.

"Twenty-five," he said.

"See? Tiny."

"I didn't say anything."

"You were thinking it."

Then hips.

Claire turned sideways while he measured around their widest point.

Harold checked the number twice.

Claire glanced over her shoulder. "Are you going to write down every inch of me?"

"That's generally what measuring means."

She laughed.

So far, nothing about it seemed particularly strange.

Then Harold straightened.

"Bust."

Claire looked down at herself.

"Of course."

"What?"

"Nothing. Go ahead."

She lifted her arms slightly.

Harold stepped closer and passed the cloth tape around her back, bringing the ends together across the fullest part of her chest. He was careful—almost conspicuously careful. His fingers stayed on the tape rather than on Claire, and whenever he adjusted it he pinched only the edge of the thin white tank to keep the tape level.

Claire watched him looking down.

"Well?"

"Hold still."

"Harold, I'm not moving."

He barely heard her.

For months he had been trying to understand Claire's unusual shape through fragments: shadows under camisoles, broad circles appearing through cotton, the fleeting flash of soft pink he'd caught through a neckline, and the sharper but still obstructed images from the new cameras.

Now he had something none of those glimpses had given him.

Scale.

The tape lay directly across the front of the tank, its markings passing over the broad raised contours beneath the fabric.

Harold checked the legitimate measurement first.

"Thirty-eight and a quarter."

Claire glanced down. "Is that good?"

"It's a measurement."

"Very helpful."

But Harold's eyes had already returned to the centimeter side of the tape.

He followed the left contour carefully.

The thin cotton rose away from the smoother curve of Claire's breast, stayed elevated across a surprisingly broad span, then settled again.

Harold looked at the markings.

Then back at the contour.

Then at the markings again.

About eight and a half centimeters.

His pulse quickened.

He checked the other side.

Nearly the same.

Perhaps a few millimeters of difference depending on exactly where he judged the soft edge of the raised circle to begin, but unmistakably in the same range.

Eight to nine centimeters across.

Harold swallowed.

The number made the feature seem even more extraordinary than it had on the cameras. Each raised circle occupied nearly half the apparent width of the breast beneath the tank.

He'd suspected that.

Now he had a ruler stretched directly across the evidence.

"What's taking so long?" Claire asked.

"The tape twisted."

Claire looked down.

"It did not."

Harold adjusted it anyway.

She gave him a suspicious little smile.

"You're becoming weirdly meticulous."

"I want the measurement right."

"Mhm."

He moved the tape a fraction higher, ostensibly checking whether he'd captured the fullest point of her bust.

In reality, he wanted to see the scale once more.

The left contour began near one centimeter mark and flattened again roughly eight and a half centimeters later.

Harold stared.

$8.5$ centimeters.

Approximately.

The number lodged itself immediately in his memory.

Then he checked the other side again.

Almost identical.

A ridiculous satisfaction washed through him. He had spent months wondering whether the outlines beneath Claire's clothes had made them appear larger than they really were.

They hadn't.

If anything, he'd underestimated them.

Claire watched his face.

"You're doing math now, aren't you?"

Harold looked up. "What?"

"You have your math face."

"I don't have a math face."

"You absolutely have a math face."

She smiled.

Harold wrote the legitimate bust measurement on the pad beside him:

38.25 in.

He did not write the other number.

He didn't need to.

8.5 cm.

That one wasn't going anywhere.

"Underbust," he said.

Claire's eyebrows rose.

"You need a lot of measurements."

"It's useful for fit."

"Whatever you say, Calvin Klein."

She lifted her arms again.

Harold passed the tape around her ribcage beneath her breasts. This measurement told him almost nothing about the particular feature occupying his thoughts, but he took it carefully anyway. Anything less would have made his interest in the previous measurement look suspicious.

"Thirty-four."

Claire smiled triumphantly.

"So I'm exactly what I keep telling you I am."

"Apparently."

"Glad the scientific investigation finally confirmed it."

Harold smiled faintly and wrote down the number.

34 in.

Claire lowered her arms.

For a moment the tank shifted as it resettled over her chest, and Harold's attention went straight back to those broad contours.

Claire noticed.

She was getting very good at noticing.

"Harold."

His eyes rose.

"What?"

"You finished measuring five seconds ago."

"I was checking how the fabric settled."

Claire laughed.

"Of course you were."

She still thought she understood what was happening. She was braless in an extremely thin white tank while her middle-aged boss stood close enough to measure her chest. Naturally Harold was struggling to behave normally.

It was ridiculous.

And, in its own strange way, mildly charming.

Claire had spent years discovering how easily she could fluster men. Harold was simply an especially transparent example.

What she didn't realize was that his attention was no longer directed toward her chest in any general sense.

He was thinking about $8.5$ centimeters.

"Turn sideways," Harold said.

Claire stared at him.

"Why?"

"I want the profile."

"The profile?"

"How far the garment stands away from the body."

Claire's expression turned skeptical.

"That's a measurement?"

"For drape."

She laughed. "You've really learned some words lately."

Harold ignored the jab.

Claire turned into profile.

The bright fluorescent light fell directly across the side of the white tank.

Harold's concentration sharpened again.

From the front, the tape had given him width.

From the side, he could finally estimate the other dimension he'd obsessed over almost as much.

Projection.

Claire's breast formed a smooth outward curve beneath the material. Near its center, however, the fabric rose again over the broad puffy areola before reaching the smaller point of the nipple.

Harold held the tape vertically beside her, not touching her with it, pretending to compare the fall of the tank from chest to waist.

Claire watched him in the mirror.

He shifted his head slightly.

The breast surface gave him one reference.

The peak of the broad raised contour gave him another.

Harold compared the difference against the centimeter markings.

Just under two.

He looked again.

Claire shifted her weight.

The fabric changed slightly.

Harold waited for it to settle.

There.

Roughly two centimeters.

His breath caught.

That was it.

The second number.

About $2$ centimeters of projection beyond the surrounding breast surface.

Harold had spent months seeing the effect without understanding its exact scale: shirts subtly lifted where they should have lain smooth, wide shadows appearing around Claire's nipples, fabric tracing raised circles whenever she stretched.

Two centimeters explained all of it.

He moved a fraction closer, concentrating so completely that for a few seconds he forgot how strange he must look.

Eight and a half centimeters across.

Approximately two centimeters outward.

Nearly half the width of each breast.

Soft pink, from the glimpses he'd managed to catch.

And beneath the harsh fluorescent lights, the white cotton still occasionally revealed those faint natural variations across the raised surface that he'd first noticed during the previous fitting.

Harold stared.

The numbers somehow made everything more vivid.

These were no longer vague impressions he'd pieced together from security footage.

He knew the proportions now.

Claire watched his reflection.

He was unusually quiet.

His lips were pressed together, his attention fixed with almost comical intensity on the tape beside her.

"Harold."

Nothing.

"Harold."

He blinked.

"What?"

Claire laughed.

"You're, like, six inches from my boob."

Harold straightened immediately.

"I'm checking the profile."

"The profile."

"Yes."

"Very scientific."

She turned back toward him.

Harold gathered the tape, visibly flustered.

Claire smiled to herself.

He was having an extraordinarily difficult time acting normal tonight.

She found that more funny than alarming. If anything, there was something satisfying about knowing that after all these months she could still leave him this completely distracted just by standing there in a tank top.

"Anything else, Professor?"

Harold glanced at his notes.

He already had everything he legitimately needed.

Bust: $38.25$ inches.

Underbust: $34$ inches.

And the two measurements that existed only in his head:

approximately $8.5$ centimeters across.

approximately $2$ centimeters projected.

He should have stopped.

Instead, he looked once more at the front of the tank.

Claire caught him.

Her smile widened.

"You are really taking this seriously."

"I want accurate sizing."

"You've measured my bust twice."

"I was checking consistency."

"Consistency."

"Yes."

Claire folded her arms loosely, amused.

The movement compressed the tank slightly and changed the contours beneath it.

Harold's eyes dropped before he could stop himself.

Claire burst out laughing.

"Oh my God."

"What?"

"You are hopeless."

Harold looked away.

She shook her head.

Still smiling.

Something about him was definitely different tonight. He was more focused, more meticulous, and noticeably worse at hiding when his attention wandered. But he still hadn't crossed whatever invisible boundary Claire had established in her mind. He hadn't grabbed her, hadn't asked her to expose herself, hadn't even touched her chest. Mostly he'd handled a measuring tape and stared far too seriously at a tank top.

Weird?

Absolutely.

Threatening?

Not really.

And Claire still enjoyed enough of their little game that she wasn't particularly motivated to end it.

"Are we done measuring me?"

Harold hesitated.

Claire caught it instantly.

"Harold."

"Yeah. We're done."

"Good."

She started toward the dressing room, then stopped and looked back.

"You know, normal people can order tank tops without conducting a full engineering survey."

Harold smiled sheepishly.

"Normal people don't own the store."

Claire shook her head.

"You're getting weirder."

But she was smiling when she said it.

"Should I be worried?"

"No."

"Good answer."

She turned away again.

As far as Claire was concerned, the whole thing remained the same game they'd been playing for months. Harold stared. Claire caught him. Harold invented some ridiculous professional excuse. Claire teased him about it and enjoyed watching him squirm.

She assumed he was simply hopelessly fascinated by her breasts.

What she didn't understand was that tonight Harold hadn't merely been looking.

He had been measuring.

By the time Claire reached the dressing-room door, he knew more about the hidden feature he'd become obsessed with than he'd ever expected to learn without actually seeing it.

$8.5$ centimeters across.

Almost half the width of each breast.

Roughly $2$ centimeters of projection.

A soft pink color that the thin white cotton only partially concealed.

Hints of texture beneath the material whenever the fluorescent light and fabric aligned perfectly.

Harold watched Claire disappear into the dressing room.

For months he'd wanted a clearer picture.

Then he'd wanted confirmation.

Then color.

Then scale.

Now he had numbers.

Precise enough numbers that he could picture the shape almost perfectly.

It should have satisfied him.

Instead, knowing exactly how unusual they were made the missing piece feel even more tantalizing.

Harold folded the measuring tape slowly and set it on the table.

For the first time, he understood just how far his curiosity had gone.

And how badly he still wanted to see what the numbers couldn't show him.

------

The next sample Harold chose made the white tank look conservative.

Claire unfolded it slowly.

Then she looked at Harold.

“You cannot be serious.”

“It’s a swimwear sample,” Harold said.

“It’s dental floss with ambition.”

Harold tried not to smile.

Claire held it against herself and shook her head. A few months earlier she probably would have refused immediately. Now, after so many fittings, the situation felt almost routine. Harold had seen her in tiny shorts, braless camisoles, sheer-looking tanks, and enough revealing clothes that another swimsuit no longer felt like some enormous boundary.

Besides, she was still the one deciding whether to put it on.

“Fine,” she said. “But if this thing falls off, you’re paying me double.”

She disappeared into the dressing room.

A minute later Claire stared at herself in the mirror.

“Jesus.”

The top covered her, technically.

Barely.

The little white triangles sat directly over the centers of her breasts while leaving most of their upper and outer curves exposed. Because Claire’s areolas were so unusually broad, the cups had an additional problem she hadn’t anticipated: even centered properly, they covered the pink circles without much room to spare.

Claire adjusted the left triangle.

A narrow edge of pink disappeared beneath it.

She shifted the fabric in the opposite direction.

The other edge threatened to peek out.

“Oh, that’s ridiculous.”

She tried centering it more carefully. The tiny cup compressed the raised center of her breast slightly, reducing some of its natural projection beneath the fabric, but because the areola underneath was so broad, its rounded shape still influenced almost the entire little triangle.

Claire turned sideways.

From that angle the effect was even more obvious. The bikini pressed the center inward while the surrounding breast remained naturally smooth and high. At the cup’s outer edge, where the pressure ended, the raised area beneath seemed to swell back toward its natural shape.

Claire noticed it.

Of course she did.

They were her breasts.

But to her it was simply an annoying fitting problem caused by an absurdly small bikini. She had long ago stopped thinking of the unusually large, puffy shape of her areolas as anything remarkable in itself.

She tightened the strings and checked both sides again.

Everything important was covered.

Technically.

It was absurdly skimpy.

It also looked fantastic on her.

That settled it.

Claire opened the dressing-room door.

Harold looked up.

And went completely still.

Claire immediately grinned.

“Oh, come on.”

Harold said nothing.

“Harold.”

He blinked. “What?”

“You look like somebody unplugged you.”

“It’s…” He swallowed. “Minimal.”

“Very insightful.”

Claire walked toward the brighter work area.

That was when Harold realized just how much more information the bikini gave him.

The tiny cups didn’t merely reveal the general shape of Claire’s breasts.

They provided boundaries.

For months Harold had been trying to work out where those broad raised circles actually began and ended beneath clothing. Shirts had given him contours. The white tank had given him scale. The measuring tape had let him estimate roughly eight and a half centimeters across and close to two centimeters of projection.

But clothing always blurred the transition.

The microbikini didn’t.

The uncovered skin surrounding each tiny white triangle was plainly visible. The fabric pressed lightly across the raised center, flattening it somewhat, while the breast immediately beside the cup remained completely exposed.

Where the little triangle sat fractionally off-center, the outer edge of the broad pink circle came tantalizingly close to the border of the fabric.

Harold stared.

He could actually see where the smooth pale skin of Claire’s breast began changing into that warmer pink.

He’d spent months estimating where that boundary must be.

Now it was almost sitting in front of him.

Claire caught his expression.

“This might be too small.”

“No.”

The answer came much too quickly.

Claire looked at him.

Then she laughed.

“Wow.”

“I mean for the sample size.”

“Sure you did.”

She looked down and adjusted the left cup slightly.

The fabric slid perhaps half an inch.

For an instant, a narrow crescent of soft pink appeared beside its inner edge.

Harold’s attention locked onto it.

This was different from the tiny glimpse he'd caught through the camisole months earlier. That had been little more than color disappearing beneath a neckline before he could understand what he'd seen.

Now he knew exactly what he was looking at.

The exposed crescent was only a small portion of the areola, but freed from the pressure of the tiny cup, that visible edge immediately looked fuller and puffier than the section compressed beneath the fabric. The transition from the smooth surrounding breast into the soft raised pink area was unmistakable.

Under the bright work-room lights it also caught the light differently.

Not dramatically.

Just enough to give the exposed skin a faint natural sheen that distinguished it from the surrounding breast.

And from this close, Harold could see that the surface wasn’t perfectly uniform either. The exposed strip carried a delicate natural unevenness—tiny variations across the soft pink surface that the white tank had only suggested through fabric.

Then Claire shifted the cup back into position.

Gone.

Harold continued staring at the exact spot where it had been.

Claire didn’t notice.

To her, she was simply making sure the bikini covered everything it was supposed to.

To Harold, she had just given him another fixed point.

He knew exactly where that pink edge had appeared.

And because he already knew the approximate width beneath the cup, his mind immediately completed the rest.

Then Claire noticed the measuring tape sitting on the table.

She picked it up herself.

“So are we doing another engineering survey?”

Harold looked at the tape.

“Probably.”

“Of course we are.”

She handed it to him.

That amused her more than anything else.

By now the ritual was so familiar that neither of them treated it as particularly remarkable. Harold measured things. Harold became absurdly serious while measuring them. Claire made fun of him.

Same routine.

At least from Claire’s perspective.

Harold started with the legitimate bust measurement.

He passed the tape around her back and brought it together across the bikini.

“Thirty-eight and a quarter.”

Claire smiled.

“Still haven’t mutated.”

“Apparently not.”

Then Harold checked the bikini itself.

Claire stood with her hands loosely on her hips while he measured the width of one tiny triangle, then the distance between the cups, ostensibly determining whether the proportions matched the sample’s listed size.

This time, however, the geometry made his private calculation almost embarrassingly easy.

The edge of the cup gave him one reference.

The fleeting strip of exposed pink gave him another.

The broad raised contour beneath the compressed fabric supplied the rest.

Harold turned the tape slightly so the centimeter markings faced him.

His eyes moved from the exposed edge of Claire’s breast to the numbers.

Then back.

He could estimate where the pink area disappeared beneath one side of the cup.

He knew where it emerged near the other.

He checked the distance.

Eight point something.

Harold leaned a little closer.

Claire watched him but said nothing yet.

He checked again.

About eight and a half centimeters.

Exactly where he had put it before.

His pulse quickened.

Harold shifted his attention to the opposite breast.

Approximately the same.

Depending on precisely where he judged the soft transition from pale skin to the raised pink area, perhaps a few millimeters either way.

But there was no meaningful doubt left.

Eight to nine centimeters.

Nearly half the visible width of each breast.

Harold felt that familiar surge of fascination, only stronger now because there was almost no uncertainty left.

The numbers he had previously inferred through the tank were correct.

He had been right.

Claire’s areolas really were enormous relative to her breasts.

Claire watched his face.

“You are doing the face again.”

Harold looked up.

“What face?”

“The one where apparently swimwear requires calculus.”

“I’m checking symmetry.”

Claire laughed.

“Symmetry.”

Harold nodded with exaggerated seriousness. “Important.”

“Obviously.”

She was still smiling.

Harold moved slightly to the side.

The profile was even more informative.

The microbikini compressed the central portion of the breast differently from the tank. Beneath the tiny triangle, the raised areola was pushed gently inward, reducing the full projection Harold had previously measured.

But immediately beside the cup, where the broad pink area escaped that pressure, its natural shape became much easier to appreciate.

The transition was striking.

Smooth pale breast.

Then the beginning of the warmer pink area, rising gently away from the surrounding surface.

Then the tiny white triangle pressing across its center.

At the outer edge of the cup, a very narrow portion of the areola remained uncovered. Without the fabric holding it down, that exposed edge looked noticeably softer and fuller than the compressed section disappearing beneath the bikini.

Harold stared longer than he intended.

Claire saw him in the mirror.

“You’re really fascinated by this thing.”

“The fit is strange.”

“The bikini or me?”

Harold looked up.

Claire smiled.

“Relax. I’m kidding.”

She really was remarkably comfortable now.

Months of repetition had changed the entire atmosphere of their fittings. Harold’s staring no longer surprised her. His bizarrely meticulous measurements barely surprised her. Even the way he sometimes became completely tongue-tied around her had become part of the routine.

If anything, Claire occasionally enjoyed pushing him just enough to see how badly he would stumble.

What she still didn’t understand was how narrow his fascination had become.

Harold lifted the tape again.

Claire watched him through the mirror.

“More science?”

“Profile.”

She laughed immediately.

“You’re still doing the profile thing?”

“It was useful last time.”

“Apparently.”

Harold held the tape beside her breast rather than against it, using the centimeter markings as a visual reference.

Now the microbikini made the measurement much easier.

The uncovered breast surface gave him a clear baseline. The exposed edge of the puffy areola showed him how far the raised tissue naturally extended before the bikini began compressing it.

Harold shifted his head slightly to correct the angle.

The difference looked close to two centimeters.

He checked again.

Claire remained still.

The exposed portion rose noticeably from the surrounding breast before disappearing beneath the white triangle.

Roughly two.

Perhaps fractionally under depending on exactly where he established the baseline.

But close enough.

Two centimeters.

Harold felt another private thrill of confirmation.

Eight and a half centimeters across.

Nearly half the breast.

Approximately two centimeters of natural projection.

Soft pink.

And now, finally, he had seen enough actual uncovered skin to know that the faint texture he'd previously glimpsed through white cotton had been real as well.

He lowered the tape slowly.

Claire watched his reflection.

“Finished?”

Harold hesitated.

She smiled immediately.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“That look.”

“What look?”

“The one that says you desperately need one more extremely important scientific measurement.”

Harold gave an embarrassed laugh.

Claire shook her head.

“You are getting unbelievably weird about these fittings.”

But she was still smiling.

Harold looked again at the bikini.

Claire caught that too.

“You’re not even pretending anymore.”

“I am pretending.”

The words escaped before he could reconsider them.

Claire burst out laughing.

“That might be the most honest thing you've said all night.”

Harold looked embarrassed.

Claire enjoyed that.

She adjusted the left bikini cup again, checking that it hadn't shifted while he was measuring her.

The tiny triangle moved sideways.

For a fraction of a second the same narrow crescent of pink appeared at its edge.

This time it was slightly wider.

Harold’s eyes dropped automatically.

The exposed portion immediately regained the fullness that the fabric had been suppressing. Against the smooth breast beside it, the little visible crescent looked distinctly puffy and rounded, curving outward before disappearing beneath the white triangle.

The bright light caught its surface.

Harold could make out that delicate natural unevenness again—minute variations across the pink skin, visible only because he was standing so close and because nothing covered that narrow strip.

It lasted perhaps a second.

Claire adjusted the cup back.

The bikini compressed the exposed edge again.

Gone.

Harold was still looking.

Claire followed his gaze down toward herself.

By then everything was properly covered.

When she looked back up, Harold had abruptly adopted the expression of a man evaluating quarterly sales figures.

Claire almost laughed.

Whatever he'd been hoping to see, she assumed she'd caught him trying for another glimpse of her breasts.

Same old Harold.

Harold didn't say anything, but for one strange second his whole expression tightened. His breath caught, his shoulders went rigid, and then he seemed to realize where he was and abruptly looked away.

Claire noticed.

She watched him for another second, wondering what the hell that had been.

“You okay?”

“Fine.”

The answer came much too quickly.

Claire's eyes narrowed with amusement. Whatever had just happened, Harold looked more flustered than she'd ever seen him. For one ridiculous moment she wondered whether the bikini had affected him even more than she'd realized.

Then she almost laughed at herself.

Jesus, Claire. Get over yourself.

She let it go.

Harold didn't.

Because underneath the tiny white triangles, beside the narrow exposed crescents of pink, he had finally seen enough to understand almost exactly what remained hidden.

And somehow that was worse than knowing nothing.

“Can I change now?”

Harold looked as though he wanted to say something else.

Then apparently thought better of it.

“Yeah.”

“Good.”

Claire started toward the dressing room.

After two steps she glanced over her shoulder.

Harold was still staring.

She smiled.

“Enjoying the inventory?”

Harold finally looked at her face.

“Very funny.”

Claire laughed and disappeared behind the dressing-room door.

She thought she understood exactly what had happened.

The bikini was ridiculously small.

Harold liked breasts.

She'd let him stare.

He'd gotten extraordinarily flustered.

She'd teased him about it.

Maybe she'd even affected him rather more than either of them wanted to acknowledge.

Nothing particularly complicated.

Harold understood the evening very differently.

The tank had given him numbers.

The microbikini had given those numbers boundaries.

He now knew almost precisely where the broad circles began and ended. He knew that each one measured roughly eight and a half centimeters across—nearly half the width of the breast. He knew their natural projection was close to two centimeters. He knew how dramatically the tiny cups compressed that projection and how immediately the uncovered edges regained their softer, puffier shape.

He knew their color now with far greater certainty.

Soft pink.

He had seen the subtle difference between the smooth surrounding breast and the delicate natural texture of the exposed areola itself.

Most importantly, he had finally seen actual portions of them uncovered rather than merely reconstructed through fabric.

He had never possessed so complete a picture.

For months Harold had been trying to imagine what those hidden circles must look like.

Now he hardly needed to imagine.

Almost every piece was there.

Almost.

And that was the problem.

The microbikini had shown him enough that the remaining mystery had become incredibly specific.

He knew the dimensions.

He knew the projection.

He knew the color.

He knew the texture, at least around the exposed edges.

What he still hadn't seen was the whole thing at once.

Harold looked toward the closed dressing-room door.

It should have satisfied his curiosity.

Instead, it had transformed curiosity into something much harder to ignore.

Claire still thought their game was about her breasts.

She still thought Harold was simply trying to steal the occasional glimpse down her shirt, getting flustered whenever she wore something particularly revealing.

She had no idea that his attention had narrowed to one remarkably specific feature months ago.

And somehow the fact that Claire remained completely unaware of what he had actually been studying made Harold's obsession feel even more consuming.
