Dr. Miller says “Okay Mrs. Morgan, I will continue the breast exam with you laying down, go ahead and lie back and lift your legs and I will lift up the table extension for you.” Rachel, hating that he will be fondling her breasts yet again, reluctantly lies back, making the table paper crinkle loudly, as she lifts her legs up some, the doctor swings up the narrow table extension and locks it into place. Rachel lowers her legs onto it as the doctor says “Place your hands behind your head again please.”

Rachel does as she is told and the doctor re-examines her breasts, thoroughly and completely feeling every square inch of her breast tissue, and also palpates her armpit areas to check her lymph nodes. As the doctor does all of this, Rachel hears a man’s voice outside Sarah’s cubicle say “Mrs. Lewis, I’m Dr. Taylor, may the nurse and I enter?” Rachel hears Sarah say “Yes.” Rachel hears the doctor going over Sarah’s medical history, then he says “Okay Mrs. Lewis, go ahead and remove just your blouse and skirt, then have a seat back up on the end of the table.” Sarah, having already heard Rachel’s doctor explain why there are no gowns offered, says nothing and slips off of the exam table with accompanying paper crinkling, and undresses. Rachel hears the sound of Sarah’s high heels on the tile floor as she moves around undressing, then the sound of Sarah sitting back up on the exam table with loud table paper crinkling.

Rachel is surprised at the number of doctors and nurses in this temporary makeshift clinic. She figures that they need an extra doctor and nurse for the women’s physicals, since it usually takes longer to give a woman a full exam than a man. She figures at least half, if not more of the new employees hired so far today are women, based on what she saw in the lobby and in this makeshift clinic. Rachel shudders at the thought that she most likely will be getting a Pap and pelvic done, and dreads the possibility of receiving her first ever rectal exam!
