It was Friday, November 5th, 2010. Melanie Kamp, 21 years old and working as a nurse, woke up in the morning and thought:

Oh man, here we go again, I have to go to the occupational physician for a check-up. Hopefully this time he won’t be as rough when drawing blood as he usually is.

She got out of bed, went to the bathroom, then got dressed and went to work. At 10:00 a.m., the time had come. She went to the second floor to the room designated for this purpose. She waited briefly, then she was called in.

Medical assistant: Ms. Kamp, you can go in already, I’ll be with you in a moment.

Melanie was relieved that the blood wouldn’t be drawn by the doctor. Then the assistant came in, took her blood, measured her height, and weighed her. After that, she had to wait about half an hour for the lab results.

When the 30 minutes were up, she was called again, but this time she went into the doctor’s office. There she was greeted by Dr. Sander, a 40-year-old dark-haired man. After the greeting, an anamnesis interview followed, during which she had to answer some questions about her medical history. Then the doctor said to her:

Doctor: So, Ms. Kamp, I would ask you to undress in the small room next door so that I can examine you.

Melanie replied: Okay.

She went into the next room, took off her white sweater, her white trousers, and her socks, and returned to the doctor’s office wearing only her bra and underwear.

Doctor: Alright, please sit here on the examination table.

She sat down, and first he took a wooden tongue depressor and his small lamp.

Doctor: Please open your mouth wide, stick out your tongue, and say “ahhh!”

Melanie: Aaaaaaaaaaa

Doctor: Very good.

Then he palpated her neck. Next, he took the otoscope from his desk and looked into her ears. After that, he took the black Littmann stethoscope from the desk.

Doctor: Now I would ask you to take off your bra; I will examine you thoroughly with the stethoscope.

Melanie nodded and took off her bra. The doctor put the earpieces into his ears and stepped closer to her. He began listening to her chest.

Doctor: Please take a deep breath.

Melanie inhaled deeply through her open mouth.

Doctor: And exhale.

Melanie exhaled. This continued as he listened to her chest point by point, asking her to inhale and exhale. Then he moved to her back and first tapped it. After that, he again put the earpieces in his ears and listened to her entire back while Melanie simply sat there taking deep breaths.

Doctor: Very good. Your lungs are perfectly healthy. Now please lie down so I can listen to your heart.

Melanie lay down, and Dr. Sander listened to the young nurse’s heartbeat.

Doctor: Your heart sounds very good.

Next, he palpated her abdomen and listened to her bowel sounds. Then her blood pressure was measured.

Doctor: 120/80. Very good. Now please stand up and walk across the room.

Melanie took a few steps, then walked back to the doctor, and he examined her spine with his fingers.

Doctor: Very good. Everything seems to be fine with you, Ms. Kamp. You may get dressed again.

Melanie went back into the changing room and got dressed again. Then she sat down at the desk, and the doctor told her that her lab results were also fine. Then he said goodbye.

Doctor: See you next time.

Melanie left the room and returned to her work.
