Julia is not in "good shape". Both her arms and legs are broken in multiple spots and half of her body is badly bruised and her IUD has dislodged and is causing internal bleeding. On top of all this her most pressing issue is her head injury and brain swelling. As the medical professionals are cutting Eric out of his clothes they learn he was in fact not in the car crash but simply rescuing the victim who was his girlfriend. Eric keeps asking if Julia is ok and all they tell him is she is being prepped for emergency surgery and ask him if he has family information which he immediately provides.

They suspect Eric has damage to his pelvis from the fall and prep him for an Xray. Julia's surgeons are putting out multiple fires, first stabilizing her and then assessing her other injuries. She isn't breathing sufficiently due to her brain injury so it is determined she needs to be placed on a ventilator. They decide her broken bones and internal bleeding are less pressing matters and decide she needs a part of her skull to be removed to relieve pressure from the brain swelling.

Eric's mom and Julia's parents arrive within the hour. Katie is ushered in to see Eric right away and nurse informs Julia's parents she is in emergency surgery and can't give them any updates. Katie walks in to see Eric's eyes red and scratchy and gently comes in and gives him a hug, "Your father will be here in a while. Tell me what happened, all I heard is there was a serious car accident."

"Ma, they won't tell me anything. All I know is Julia's car crashed into the lake and I ran out of the apartment to pull her out. Ma, she wasn't breathing and her head was bleeding. She was out driving because of me. I basically killed my girlfriend!"
