A few last wishes

Part 51

Of course it was Julia's decision and of course she picked an older woman to be Eric's doctor. 68 year old woman with a warm reassuring voice. Katie was never going to make the decision, she was happy Julia was letting her be involved in her son's life and decisions. Julia carefully listened and valued her opinion, more than a thousand Garys ever could.

Julia wants to stop and pick up something for Eric, but she doesn't want to extend her departure time. Something is pulling her back to him and her condo, what she doesn't know is it is her one chance of life. Her first sign should have been when her key didn't fit as smoothly into the ignition when she first left the apartment. Then the car seemed to be shifting later and later the more she drove.

Julia is driving slow and cautious, she always has had an overly sensitive awareness about how she drove ever since she overcorrected and reacted when she saw a mother walking her baby walking across an intersection. She had her permit and her father was determined to break her of her fear. Her dad never wore a seatbelt. He broke his hand in three places and Julia has never forgiven herself.

Julia's first wise decision is she always likes to feel the reassurance of her brakes, it always makes her feel as if she is in maximum control of the vehicle. First she gently taps, then she pumps, and finally frantically pumps her foot with all her might. A deep lump arises in Julia's throat as she recalls a horror story about a runaway car that won't shut off or slow down. Julia is double and triple checking through her breathing exercises and thought experiments to confirm if she is in fact awake.

Julia wastes no time in using the emergency brake, then attempting to switch from drive, to neutral and then park, bracing herself for an immediate 40 mph to zero stop. Julia quickly realizes her situation is critical and could become catastrophic.

"911, what is your emergency?

"My name is Julia Armstrong I am headed west down Herald Boulevard, I am in a pink Corvette and I can't stop. Please, I need a police car to give me some room and spike strips or something. My brakes won't work, I tried putting it in park. Please help me, don't let me hurt anyone."

"Julia, have you tried the key in the ignition. If there is a button on the key, push it in, push the key into the ignition hard and then down as hard as you can." Julia does as she is instructed and the key breaks off.

"It broke, Oh my God, there is a full traffic stop ahead. I have no where to go! There's no where to go!"

But there was somewhere to go. There was a break in traffic going in the other direction. She would have to make a sharp left and a huge bump in the median, but if she could land safely she could head straight toward the lake to her condo and the water would undoubtedly slow her down.

Julia takes a deep gulp and begins choking as she hits the median with more force than expected. The car lands and immediately tips on two wheels as its speed begins to pick up again after it's uneven landing. Before the car flips she manages to choke and cry out, "I'm sorry Eric!"

"911, Julia are you still with us? Dispatch, we may have a crash. Send multiple emergency vehicles."
