The End of Rectal Thermometer

46

Teddy, Mike, Enid, Angela, and Katie are all frantically and efficiently working to remove catheters, disconnect IVs, and stabilize patients for a quick and smooth transport. They all started just around midnight and Teddy is astounded and encouraged by the progress. Just as Mike and Enid come upstairs to report the last patient has been evacuated and the ambulance has left, two large men drag an even larger man in who is dragging his feet, "Our friend here is hurt pretty bad. Sorry we had to drag him up but there was no one downstairs to help us!"

Teddy grows suspicious right away, "Who are you exactly? We are evacuating this hospital and I suggest you leave and we can have an ambulance transport you."

Enid recognizes the largest man immediately, "Larry!" She immediately clears a gurney and the two men back away quickly. Mike and Enid ease the huge man down and rip his shirt open to see he is in fact wrapped in explosives. Mike sees and points the worse news to Enid and can see those explosives aren't just on the outside of his body, but in fact on the inside of his body as well.

Larry has a bloody face and crude sutures closed around explosive wiring leading out of his body. Enid speaks sweetly yet firmly to Larry, "Larry, it's ok, you need to tell me who did this to you."

Larry begins weeping and gently touches Enid's face, "Miss Enid, I gots caught up with some bad peoples and now I am gonna die. Please just let me go." Teddy comes closer and hears an ever increasing ticking noise on Larry's torso and orders everyone out immediately.

Enid holds on to Larry's hand, "I am not leaving him." Dr. Wells frantically rushes over to a cabinet and picks up a syringe.

Teddy grabs Enid from behind and she screams, Mike abruptly slams the cabinet drawer, "You put her down! I said now!" Teddy can see he has made a major miscalculation and sets Enid gently on her feet and in return she punches him in his chest with all her strength and once again clutches her hand with Larry's.

Dr. Wells injects Larry's arm with some medicine and looks lovingly at Enid, "Larry, I don't want you to worry about a thing right now. Did you know Enid is an amazing singer. It's true, any song you can think of she can sing it. Her voice is so beautiful."

Larry's mouth begins to chatter, "Memories from Cats, Miss Enid. I once wanted to take a girl tos a musical a long time agos and she laughed ats me.

Enid softly begins to weep, "That wasn't very nice of her, that is a beautiful song and I would love to sing it for you." Enid takes her phone out of her back pocket scrubs and sings impeccably on key.

"Memory, All alone in the moonlight, I can smile at the old daaaays, it was beautiful thhhennn, I rem em ber the time I knew what happ i ness was, let the memory live again... Touch me! It's so easy to leave me all alone with the memory of my day in the sunnnn. If you touch me you'll under stand what happ i ness is...

Now everyone is weeping, even Teddy. Larry is now heavily sedated and smiling as he wept through Enid's performance. Enid continues to hold his hand and finishes the song certain he can still hear and enjoy it. Mike gently strokes Enid's wrist, "If you can't leave him, I understand, I will stay right here with you, but your friends aren't leaving either. He felt your love, Enid. Now is our chance to go." Thirty seconds later multiple explosions go off leaving the building and human flesh in the wreckage.
