“Hello Susie, I thought Tommy was coming with you today?” The doctor said as she came into the office waiting room.

“No, ummm he.. Well thought… well I don’t think he wanted to come.”

“OK well Audry is getting everything ready and Jeanette will get you checked in. Ummm Susie, have you spoken to Fiona in the last few days?”

“No. why?”

“She hasn’t been herself… has been in a foul mood since she visited her oldest sister for a few days.”

“I haven’t seen her since I saw her in the park two weeks ago but… I hope everything is OK.”

“Thank you Susie, well why don’t you have a seat, have Jeanette check you in, and we’ll be ready soon.”

Soon Audry called Susie back to the exam room and Jeanette could just hear Susie complimenting Audry on her nurse’s cap when Fiona came rushing into the office, obviously not herself. Instead of her usual styled hair and sharp dressing she had on very basic slacks, an old shirt, and a babushka hastily tied over her wavy red hair.

“Jeanette, is William here?”

“He’s with Susie right now… She’s here for her annual exam, and I guess wants to talk to him about marital stuff?”

“I am going to wait OK? I need to talk to him…”

“Everything OK Fiona? He’s been worried sick about you.”

“OK, he usually walks the patients out. Umm can I get you something?”

About 30 minutes later the doctor, Susie, and Audry came out from the exam rooms. “Fi? Fiona?”

“Car is broken…”

“Oh? Well since you’re all here I can share some good news.” Jeanette said.

“I’m pregnant with my second baby!”

“That's wonderful!” Audry and Susie said almost in unison while Fiona was silent.

“Fiona isn’t that good news?” Audry asked.

“Yes… Great news Jeanette.” she said before bursting into tears.

“What’s wrong Fiona?” Susie asked, squeezing her hand.

“I WAS pregnant.. I didn’t tell William… Then I had a miscarriage… I was so sick one day and in pain… I called that specialist in Boston…I told William I was going to go see my sister Ursula… Said it was a family emergency. She took me… and I was having a miscarriage.. There was nothing he could do… And I didn’t tell William… We don’t keep secretes… He… I wanted him with me so bad… Girls, you're my best friends… But now you know and I don’t know how to tell William…”

“Just need to tell him Fiona.” Audry said gently.

“BUT what if he… What if he’s upset, or mad… or… Eight weeks! I was eight weeks along! I didn’t want to get his hopes up but… I should have said SOMETHING… Please stay with me while I tell him?”

A few minutes later Doctor Richardson came back into the office. “Di, The car sounded fine, I drove it around a few blocks… maybe you ran over a stick or something?”

“No… William… Please…” she said, rising to meet him as he looked around the room.

“Is everything OK? It looks like a wake in here.” he said nervously

“William. We are not supposed to have secrets… I was hiding that I was pregnant from you… I was about eight weeks along and I had a miscarriage… I had my sister Ursula take me to that specialist in Boston… He couldn’t do anything… I wanted to surprise you with great news…”

I made an appointment right away once I figured it out but then… that morning I had a stomach ache… He told me to come right down if I could… I called Ursula right away to take me. A short epilogue:

What happened to our main characters? Well the doctor practiced through the changes of the decades until retiring in the 1980’s. He and Fiona did manage to have one more child about 2 years later, another girl to be little sister to Meghan. There kids went off and did their own things, only Meghan staying in medicine and becoming a doctor herself. Which made both William and Fiona very proud. Though she opted for the hospital and city life.

Audry worked for decades as a nurse and eventually married her boyfriend, but when she was ready. Jeanette and Bobby had a few more kids and she kept working part time for Doctor Richardson until he closed his practice.

Susie ended up owning the family hardware store, which is still there to this day, although she moved the store to bigger facilities in the 1970’s. Her and Tommy managed to have one child who now owns the same store.

And finally the farm, Mary, and Mark… Well they did get married and have there own children. Mark’s daughter from his first marriage took over the grocery store and Mary and Mark’s children run the farm… And thanks to Mary’s input made it one of the first natural grocery co-ops and converted the farm to one of the first organic dairies and market gardens.
