Afterlife: Stories
Boys and Their Toys
The diesel engine roared as the massive vehicle rolled up to Ani and Meg. Brakes squealed and it lurched to a stop, rocking back and forth on it's suspension. A hatch popped open and Tommy popped his head out.
"Isn't this awesome!!!!!" he yelled. "This thing is so wicked awesome!"
Paul popped out of a turret hatch and slid down the front slope of the light armored vehicle. He put a salesman's smile on his face as he approached the women.
"You bought a tank," Meg observed, coldly.
"No! That would be stupid! We'd have no use for a tank at all!"
"Isn't this thing awesome?" Tommy said again, shutting the engine down.
"No es un Tank?" Ani asked with mock sweetness. "If this is no a TANK, than que es esto????"
"This," Paul said, slapping the front slope, "Is a Light Armored Vehicle, referred to as a LAV. Eight wheels, totally protected from small arms fire, highly mobile and much less expensive to run than a tank."
"Oh, I'm so glad to hear that," Meg said. "So, why does Adventure Tours need a LAV? And why wasn't the entire leadership committee consulted before such a...large purchase?"
"Watch what happens when I do this!" Tommy yelled. The vehicle whined as the turret turned to the right.
"Tomas! Did you hit your head, poquito? Quantos anos tienes???
Tommy's face fell and he noticed the stern expressions on the women for the first time.
"Well?" Meg asked. "We're waiting."
"Think of it as...a heavily armed recreational vehicle!" Paul said, opening his hands in a 'trust me' gesture.
